SILY 716- The Marketing Myth

We all have a story we tell ourselves about who we are and what we’re capable of. Or what we’re NOT capable of.  Mine started with a bad coworker and calcified over a decade into something I never questioned again, until I was faced with a situation that forced me to look at myself with fresh eyes. Today’s episode is about the slow, quiet way we talk ourselves out of skills we’re fully capable of learning, and what it finally took to prove myself wrong. If you’ve ever believed “that’s just not me,” you’re going to want to hear how this one turned out.

TSTP 96- A Haunting in Hawkins

A petty robbery at the Palace Arcade, a missing town delinquent and a field of eerie bioluminescent flowers blooming in the dead of winter. Something is definitely haunting Hawkins again. Join us as we kick off coverage of Season 2 of Tales From ’85, diving into the premiere episode set during a Valentine’s Day-themed February 1985.

SILY 715- Climbing the Hill

It’s been said that a manual transmission is basically an anti-theft device these days. And it turns out, learning to drive one taught me way more than just how to work a clutch. It took three different people, a driveway full of stalled engines, and one very specific hill in my hometown to teach me something about frustration, trust, and what it really looks like to help someone else find their way. Stick around, because today’s lesson might just change how you show up for the people you love.

SILY 714- Church of the Hygienist

It’s funny how your mind wanders when you’re sitting in a reclined position with sharp instruments and hands cramped in your mouth, loading your taste buds with the flavor of latex. I was recently at the dentist for my regular cleaning, and that experience helped me process today’s story. What I have for you is most certainly more enjoyable than a trip to the dentist.

S5E14 An Enemy of Fate

This is the end, cortexifriends! This has been such a rewarding journey for us, and we have heard so many of your beautiful stories over the years sharing with us your appreciation not only for Fringe as a series but also for us as a podcast, and it’s why we’ve done it. We kick things off with a really insightful conversation with Thomas Cadrot

Mistaken Identity

How securely anchored is your sense of self when the people who know you best suddenly refuse to recognize you? The Twilight Zone asks that question twice over, following two very different men who wake up unsure which version of their life is real. Both episodes probe the fragile line between identity and illusion, exploring how quickly the world you built for yourself can unravel.

219- Leaping Lizards

219- Leaping Lizards

A few days ago we attended a really great birthday. A good friend of mine had a joint birthday party for her son and daughter, and our entire family was invited to celebrate. The party was for a mixed age group, and there were kids at the party ranging from age two to age 7, and there were probably around 30 kids total.

Did I mention that this party was also a surprise for my friend’s children? It was! They walked into a room full of their friends, filled to the brim with balloons and party food. Their eyes lit up like Christmas morning as they entered the room from outside to find all of us there yelling “Happy Birthday” and each of the kids eagerly scanned the room to see which of their friends were able to make it there to celebrate with them. Does Agent Carter Live Up to the Hype?

Look out!  The Marvel Universe is expanding again! She is not as flashy as Ironman.  She is not as big as The Hulk.  Don’t worry about Agent Peggy Carter because she can  hold her own.  If you watched Captain America: the First Avenger you will already be the familiar with our main character.  After serving in the Military,  Agent  Carter is assigned to the Strategic Scientific Reserve. Among the many challenges she faces is gaining the respect of her colleagues.  It is 1946 and women are not seen as equal to men.  Agent Carter uses this to her advantage in the first episode.  She is able to get top-secret information while appearing to be simply serving coffee.  My favorite quote of the episode was, “Can you file these Carter, you’re better at that.  Better at what?  Using the alphabet?  I can teach you.  Let’s start with words that start with the letter A.”  Read More…

218- Asking The Right Questions

They guys looked confused. They pointed at me and said I had told them he drove a Mustang. My brother grinned at them as he told them that he did in fact drive a Mustang but had decided not to bring it that night. When the guys questioned who’s green Mustang was in the parking lot my brother lost his grin and ran outside.

217- Preparing for Impact

217- Preparing for Impact

Unless this is your first episode of Stuff I Learned Yesterday, you’re probably well aware that I spent nearly 19 years working at a local bookstore. When I first started with the company the store I worked at was about 12,000 square feet in size. About two years later we moved to a much larger location, that gave us a lot more space and opportunity. However, there were some nice things about the old smaller location.

After I’d been working there about a year I was promoted to oversee the Bibles and church supplies department. These items took up about two thirds of the back wall. We also imprinted names on Bibles, so I spent a lot of time at the imprinting machines. From my view at the imprinter, I could look down one of the two main aisles all the way to the front register and out through the front door. Read More…
