How securely anchored is your sense of self when the people who know you best suddenly refuse to recognize you? The Twilight Zone asks that question twice over, following two very different men who wake up unsure which version of their life is real. Both episodes probe the fragile line between identity and illusion, exploring how quickly the world you built for yourself can unravel. Today we pair “A World of Difference” and “Person or Persons Unknown” for a look at selfhood, sanity, and the unsettling possibility that reality itself might be negotiable.

In “A World of Difference,” businessman Arthur Curtis learns his ordinary life is actually a movie set, and must choose between his messier true identity as a troubled actor or the fictional life he prefers. In “Person or Persons Unknown,” David Gurney wakes to find his family and friends all insist they’ve never met him, his identity erased so thoroughly he’s committed to an asylum, and even the final scene hints his ordeal isn’t over. Which reality would you choose, and could you even tell the difference?
