SILY 711- Don’t Sell the Plane

I have spent more than a decade helping other people communicate clearly. Which makes it a little embarrassing to admit that I once talked for thirty minutes straight and never said the one thing that actually mattered. My wife stopped me with a single question, and I didn’t have an answer for it. It took me a few years, a rebuilt website, and a coach to finally understand what she was really asking, and it changed the way I sell, the way I explain things, and the way I ask questions.

SILY 710- Fresh Baked

One year ago, almost to the day, I sat down and wrote about cookies. Except I wasn’t really writing about cookies. I was writing about my daughter. The premise was simple. We all mature at different rates on different things, and just like a good batch of cookies, sometimes we need more time in the oven to become what we’re meant to be. You don’t throw the batch out. You give it more heat and more time. Well, the oven timer has gone off. It’s time to see how the cookies turned out.

S5E12 The Boy Must Live

We are truly nearing the end, cortexifans – so much so that you could make the argument that, even though this isn’t the penultimate episode of our podcast, we are covering the penultimate episode of the series given the fact that 5.12 and 5.13 aired together the same night as a two-hour finale. We talk about this incredibly important episode and all of the answers that it finally gives us alongside Fringe Connections creator Michael London.

SILY 709- Heart of the Matter

Wise. Warrior. Dancer. Husband. Father. Musician. Murderer. Songwriter. Leader. Adulterer. Victim. Full of mercy. Crazy. Cunning. Liar. Full of pride. Humble. All of these words describe the same person. It’s a person I strive to be like, and it’s the subject of today’s story. Intrigued?

Circular History

Is the past truly fixed, or is it merely waiting for someone brave enough to rewrite it? The Twilight Zone loved toying with the idea that time itself might bend for the right person, and few episodes explore that temptation as directly as “The Last Flight” and “No Time Like the Past.”

SILY 708- Surviving Disneyland

Walking out of Star Wars Land after the fireworks, I genuinely wondered if this was the moment we called it a night. We’d been in the parks for over twelve hours. My legs felt like they belonged to someone else and wished I’d find one of those hover chairs from Wall-E to melt into. I was ready to wave a white flag made out of a churro wrapper.

STDP 038 – Star Trek Discovery – S2E13 – Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 1

STDP 038 – Star Trek Discovery – S2E13 – Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 1

It’s episode 38 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, and Ruthie and Brian analyze and discuss your feedback for Star Trek: Discovery – S2E13, which is titled Such Sweet Sorrow. This episode was written by Michelle Paradise & Jenny Lumet & Alex Kurtzman, and it is directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. We finally get to see the bridge of the Enterprise, as an armada of Section 31 ships, close in, and Burnham and a skeleton crew prepare to send Discovery into the future. We both loved this episode, even with its flaws. It’s a shining example of an episode being greater than the sum of its parts.Read more…

ETFD 003- Replay

Without the constraints that often limited what Rod Serling could do, Jordan Peele get’s to take a full head of steam as he tackles the subject of racism. Join Darrell and Robert as we discuss all the Easter Eggs Darrell finds and Robert misses, and become all too familiar with the phrase, “you may not know this about me, but I haven’t seen very many movies.” But seriously, this episode hit hard for both of us. Darrell forcing a timeout for himself while watching it, and Robert often forgetting it was a Twilight Zone episode because so much about it held truth. We got a great listener feedback comment to ponder and learned a couple cool things about Black Lives Matter. Finally, as always, Darrell gave us all some homework to go watch previous TZ episode tie-ins that make the experience richer. Read More…

FC152- Lesbians in Horror

FC152- Lesbians in Horror

Lesbians in horror have come a long way since Jesus DeFranco’s bloodthirsty nymphettes. In fact, we are now at the glorious point in history in which story leads can be lesbians for no particular reason—their sexual orientation not a metaphor for anything at all. They’re just characters. Nice!

There are so many great options that we had to leave many off. What were we looking for? Main characters whose sexuality is not showcased simply for titillation or as a twisted mark of the sinister. That doesn’t mean we’ve abandoned the villain, but if you’re looking for hot girl-on-girl action, well, yes, we have a bit of that, too, but who wouldn’t make out with Catherine Deneuve? Read More…
