I’m late to this listening party but let’s talk about this awesome Doctor and season so far!
Not so awesome to hear – Packers? #Steelers! π
Guys never apologize for showing emotions! You are entitled to your emotions as much as anyone. Thank you to Darryl for his honesty in that moment!
I will be upfront and say I’ve only recently started into the Whoverse so my knowledge is limited but I know there’s people who say “my Doctor” about certain people and I feel based on what I’ve seen so far (I’m caught up on this season) that Jodie may be “my Doctor” along with Capaldi because I really liked his Doctor also; I was not always a fan of his companion, I’m more a Bill fan than Clara fan, but I enjoyed his run. This isn’t to take from what I’ve seen from Smith or Tennant but out of all the Doctors I’ve experienced so far they my favorites because they’re dark (mainly Capaldi currently), realistic and fun. Again my knowledge is limited compared to others I know so Smith and Tennant and Eccleston may be that as well but it hasn’t made me jump for more yet like Capaldi and Whitaker have so far.
I’m going to start with a really shallow comment just to get it out of the way – Jodie looked AMAZING in that suit in this episode!
As the Doctor she reminded me of Smith with her energy but Capaldi with her realism to situations and I think that’s been a really good combination so far. She’s certainly more hopeful than Capaldi which is a bit jarring to see still at times but she’s not over the top like one could argue Smith was so again she feels more real and I like it. As just an actor she’s nailing the emotions in the scenes and I’d argue may be the best yet (based on who I’ve seen) in regards to that factor!
In regards to the companions, no one is grabbing me like Amy did so far but I will say this is the best group I’ve seen beyond Amy. Ryan I’m still 50/50 on because he certainly has aspects I enjoy seeing such as his sense of adventure while still being smart in his actions and I’m interested in seeing how the motor skills element factors into the season but outside of that he does feel like a character I’ve seen on many other shows so I’m just ok about him.
Graham I thought was going to be the most stereotypical old guy honestly but I have to say I’m really enjoying him so far and how progressive and down to Earth he is; he has been a surprise character for me.
Yaz still feels kind of mysterious compared to the boys even after the latest episode but I’m liking her as well and her wanting these grand things but also being kind of held to the past essentially with wanting to be close to her family so it’ll be interesting to see long run how long she stays, hopefully a long time, and how what she experiences effects her relationships. All three are well acted also so this is just a treat trip to watch so far!
I miss Grace. π I have to agree with your wife Wayne out of the introductions Grace was my favorite of the newbies from the episode not named Doctor! I knew something would be up as she’s not in the promotional material for the season so I was kind of waiting for how she’d get left out but still it was surprising how they did it; it wasn’t necessarily surprising that she died it was more how she died, her death was the low point for this episode to me because it felt forced in that moment. Had Grace gone after the ball while Tim Shaw was still talking to Doctor it would have been one thing but to do it post him disappearing it felt inorganic so I that would be the one thing I knock the episode for…beyond that though it was a great opening for a Doctor!
The visuals of this season have been awesome! Not just the CGI visuals but the cinematography ones also!
I give this a 9 hot blondes in suits out of 10; it would have been a 10 but Grace’s death didn’t feel organic in regards to the why.
Favorite thing besides the Doctor…the crane jump would count in her stuff along with the screwdriver build so I’d agree with the companions.
BBCAmerica showed the “guest star” promo in the second airing of the episode later that night.
I feel like family is the theme of this season to which I say I hope we learn at the least names of Doctor’s family beyond River and Susan because if ever there was a season to do that discussion I feel it’s this season with the Ryan-Graham relationship and Yaz being big on her family and Doctor having that great moment talking about their family before the clothes shopping scene. I haven’t seen much on family history for Doctor in the episodes I’ve seen so I’m not holding my breath for that but if they wanted to touch on the topic then they could.
