Back to the Future

Is the line between one era and the next as thin as a single step, a single flash of light, and just as impossible to uncross? This month we cross that threshold with two travelers flung into unfamiliar futures, neither one prepared for what waits on the other side. Both stories ask whether escaping your own time can ever mean escaping your own fate, and whether justice or love holds more power.

SILY 717- The Scorecard Trap

Years ago when I first started podcasting, I would constantly look at the download numbers and as I was pulling them up, I’d get butterflies in my stomach. Downloads up, good day. Downloads down, bad day. I’d refresh the analytics page like it was going to tell me something about my worth as a human being. I eventually saw past that trap and rarely gave my podcasts stats much thought or weight. But last year, I fell back into that trap again.

TSTP 97- The Mine

After Charlie’s terrifying encounter with something in the woods, Mike, Lucas, Dustin, and Will set out on what starts as a school history project filming a mockumentary about town founder Samuel Hawkins, but quickly turns into a full-blown H.I.C. investigation. Join hosts Darrell and Addi as we break down “The Mine.”

SILY 716- The Marketing Myth

We all have a story we tell ourselves about who we are and what we’re capable of. Or what we’re NOT capable of.  Mine started with a bad coworker and calcified over a decade into something I never questioned again, until I was faced with a situation that forced me to look at myself with fresh eyes. Today’s episode is about the slow, quiet way we talk ourselves out of skills we’re fully capable of learning, and what it finally took to prove myself wrong. If you’ve ever believed “that’s just not me,” you’re going to want to hear how this one turned out.

TSTP 96- A Haunting in Hawkins

A petty robbery at the Palace Arcade, a missing town delinquent and a field of eerie bioluminescent flowers blooming in the dead of winter. Something is definitely haunting Hawkins again. Join us as we kick off coverage of Season 2 of Tales From ’85, diving into the premiere episode set during a Valentine’s Day-themed February 1985.

SILY 715- Climbing the Hill

It’s been said that a manual transmission is basically an anti-theft device these days. And it turns out, learning to drive one taught me way more than just how to work a clutch. It took three different people, a driveway full of stalled engines, and one very specific hill in my hometown to teach me something about frustration, trust, and what it really looks like to help someone else find their way. Stick around, because today’s lesson might just change how you show up for the people you love.

Single Actor Episodes

Single Actor Episodes

It takes a gifted actor to be able to pull off a single-actor episode.  When executed well – such as Agnes Moorehead’s “The Invaders,” the episode can become legendary.  Since we’ve already covered that episode, this month we look at two other single-actor episodes.  First up is Robert Cummings’ season 2 premiere, “King Nine Will Not Return.” Cummings portrays a US Air Force pilot who was unable to pilot what ended up being a fateful flight that took the lives of his entire crew.  Next up we look at Mickey Rooney’s season 5 episode, “The Last Night of a Jockey.” Rooney plays Grady, a jockey who wishes he were big after being suspended for fixing races and doping.

TSTP 55- The Nina Project

TSTP 55- The Nina Project

Brenner is back! While his return is not really a surprise, the events that unfold in “The Nina Project” with Brenner, Dr. Owens, and Eleven do bring quite a few surprises.  We see the appearance of Peter Ballard the Friendly Orderly, and we can not agree on whether or not he is truly friendly, or truly creepy.  In Hawkins, the exploration of the Creel house has us asking new questions about how many dimensions are at play in this story, and how the gang will find their way to Vecna’s lair on their own.

S1E3 The Ghost Network

S1E3 The Ghost Network

We considered using the ghost network to talk about this episode of Fringe but ultimately decided against it, so we are instead coming to you as usual via your favorite podcast app! “The Ghost Network” seemingly introduces us to amber which plays a much larger role later in the series, and it also presents us with another example of someone who was victimized by Walter’s past transgressions as he conducted morally questionable experiments for the military. We also see a shimmer of Olivia’s enhanced Cortexiphan abilities, and we talk about that enigmatic scene between Broyles and Nina near the end. Be sure to stay tuned as listeners also share their thoughts about the episode, and if you would like to be a part of the listener feedback section in the future, reach out to us via one of the contact methods listed below!

TSTP 54- Dear Billy

TSTP 54- Dear Billy

Are we the only ones who think “Dear Billy” might just be the best episode of Stranger Things yet?  With Sadie Sink’s impecable performance, this episode has us heaping praise upon praise.  Robert Englund’s performance as Victor Creel also stood out and his story gave us chills.  Is his story to be believed?  We have our doubts. Every story element of “Dear Billy” was excellent!  Nancy and Robin faking their way into Pennhurst was hilarious, and the nods to “The Silence of the Lambs” were excellent.  Capping the episode with Max’s flashback memories of the kids and Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” were absolute perfection!
