S4E16 Nothing as it Seems

Nothing is as it seems this week because it’s just the two of us – no special guest! We discuss the return of Porcupine Man from “The Transformation” and how we feel about how he is handled. We agree that it isn’t necessarily a highlight episode and we point to a scene especially that seems a bit contrived. We also voice some frustrations about the leaps in logic that this episode makes, but don’t worry, this is still Fringe, though, so we definitely also have plenty of good things to say!

SILY 668- Disorganized Progress

Who do you think of when you think of a highly organized person? Perhaps you’re like me and think of a TV or movie character like Monica Geller or Claire Dunphy. You know who doesn’t come to mind? ME! For today’s story let’s jump into the time machine and go back to the early days of my career at the bookstore.

SILY 667- Failure to Communicate

George Bernard Shaw said, “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” Communication is tricky. On one hand, we are all communicating something, verbal or non-verbal at all times. On the other hand, I think most of us have significant room to grow in this area. I think most communication issues arise not from things said, but from things unsaid.

S4E15 A Short Story About Love

We hope that you have fearless… auditory passages (?) because we are here to share a short story about love along with frequent feedbacker Eric (or Eric from Pennsylvania as you’d prefer). This was such a fun episode to record especially since we love some aspects of this episode and not so much others. We love that we get some counterbalancing feedback from Geoff (xforce11) as well as some feedback from Rory, Anna (not Torv), Erin, ShelkyBean, and Patty from Canadia!

SILY 666- Old Testament Laws Explained

For most of us, reading the Old Testament is not fun. All of those names and laws are difficult to read and are the reason many who have tried reading the Bible from cover to cover often fail once they get to Leviticus. Those books do serve a purpose, though, and today we’ll explore that. It’s a bit of a deep dive, but because the laws are so misunderstood by today’s culture, it’s important we take the time to explore this fully.

Visions of the Future

What happens when ordinary people are granted extraordinary glimpses into the darkest corners of reality? Both “The Purple Testament” and “What’s in the Box” explore the terrifying burden of unwanted knowledge.

CE01 – Matthew Graham Interview

CE01 – Matthew Graham Interview

As we anxiously await the arrival of the Childhood’s End miniseries, we decided to go straight to the source for information about this Arthur C. Clarke adaptation. Writer and executive producer, Matthew Graham, sat down with Mike for a breakdown of how this story was developed for the small screen.

It was a daunting task, and Graham was able to outline the challenges quite nicely. Here’s how he described his thought process in dividing the story into three acts, one for each night of the miniseries: Read more…

371- Preparing for the Inevitable

Today I will once again be talking about change, but not the kind that you can carry around in your pocket. I’ve spoken about change a few times on this podcast, and I expect that it will be a topic that will continue to be a point of discussion with some regularity. Why? Because change is inevitable. It affects all of us in various ways at various times, and it continues to be a relevant topic.

Today’s focus will be this very podcast. That’s right, Stuff I Learned Yesterday is just as susceptible to change as anything else is. Read More…

FC 46- Radio Station Horror Movies

You might be surprised by how many films use the idea of a radio station DJ for horror. Most of these films are not very good – Dead Air, The Severed Arm, Bad Channels, yes, even Rob Zombie’s Lords of Salem. Not good. But other films manage to mine the public exposure and personal vulnerability of an on air DJ to excellent effect, generating an anxious terror that can fuel a whole film. Here are our five personal favorites. Read More…

TWDTT 031 – Start to Finish (S6E8)

The season 6 mid-season finale is finally here with the 8th episode, “Start to Finish” and what a doozy! While perhaps not as strong as past mid-season finales, this episode ended on what appears to be another huge cliffhanger. The show begins and ends with poor Sam, who is not adapting to this new world as fast as his mother. After spending all of his time since the wolf attack upstairs, his first venture downstairs will be to walk through a huge herd of walkers wearing a guts poncho. Understandably, he is unsure of himself; and in his moment of uncertainty, he calls out for his mother. But that’s just the end! In this episode of TWDTT, we discuss all of the many other juicy/intense/crazy scenes in “Start to Finish.” Read More…
