Hello, SleepyHeads!  This week on Witness Prophecies, we discuss Sleepy Hollow Season 3 Episode 11, entitled “Kindred Spirits” which originally aired on February 19, 2016.  The Kindred is back, but he has apparently turned evil and is on a killing spree!  Why?  Because he is looking for his very own kindred spirit and mate.

This episode explored several of our characters relationships, not all of which were kindred spirits for each other.

Abbie Mills is suffering Post Traumatic Stress Disorder after her ordeal in the catacombs, and Ichabod Crane can’t get her to open up to him, despite their care and affection for one another.  You’d be suffering too, if you were deprived of sleep, food, water and companionship for almost a year!

SHS3E11 - Crane and ZoeCrane runs into Zoe Corinth at the nursery, when he is buying replacement houseplants for Abbie.  Zoe pointedly tells him, “that’s what happens when you ignore things,” referring to both the dead plants and their fledgling relationship.

Joe Corbin challenges Jenny Mills for holding on to her father’s lighter, which she previously stole for use in the astral projection spell.  Joe realizes that Jenny continues to have unresolved issues regarding her father’s abandonment, and that her spirit won’t be settled until she has some answers.  He and Jenny are certainly kindred spirits at this point in their relationship – he is in tune with her deepest feelings – ones that Jenny won’t acknowledge.  And speaking of “in tune,” admit it – Joe plays a mean glass armonica!

SHS3E11 - Kindred Spirits MeetAbbie and Crane created The Kindred, realize that they “abandoned” their creation (who knew?),  and through the hints left behind by Benjamin Franklin, learn that The Kindred is experiencing emotion, and becoming human.  The Kindred needs love and connections, just like normal human beings.   Interestingly, Franklin realized this as well about his original creations, and he made a mate for The Kindred, his very own Kindred Spirit.  Abbie, Crane, Jenny, Joe, and Sophie Foster are able to find the Kindress, unite the two creatures, and The Kindred’s desire for revenge and hurting others ends.

Pandora and The Hidden One are spirits that seem to be out of synch.  She desires the power she had through her special box, her “bounty,” that she enjoyed for the 4000 years that The Hidden One was gone.  He doesn’t care for trivial human emotion, and is not willing to please his wife by restoring her power.  Will Pandora’s spirit seek revenge on her husband’s spirit before season’s end?  It would seem that The Hidden One should take Miss Zoe Corinth’s advice!

SHS3E11 - Abbie and Danny at the Crime SceneDanny Reynolds declares his love for Abbie, how she made him be a better person, a better FBI agent.  He seems to believe their spirits should be tied together, but she seems taken aback, and will only commit to going back to work.

In the last scene, Abbie and Crane are playing chess.  She cuts her finger and Crane leaves to fetch a bandaid.  Abbie absentmindedly draws a symbol in the blood, realizes what she has done, hears whispers, and flashes back to the catacombs.  Clearly troubled, she quickly smudges it before Crane returns and can see what she has done.  What does this mean?  Is her spirit tethered to someone else besides Crane? Does The Hidden One or Pandora have some control over Abbie?

We will need to wait….and see.

History Lesson of the Week – Benjamin Franklin and the Glass Armonica

Benjamin Franklin was very interested in music, and was an amateur musician.  In 1761, he attended a concert in London and watched as a colleague of his performed on a set of water tuned wine glasses.  He was so impressed, he was determined to build his own instrument.  He had a glassmaker create 37 different hemispheres of glass through which he ran an iron rod, nesting them together from smallest to largest.  He put these on a spinning wheel type apparatus, moistened his fingers and held them against the rims of the glass as they turned, producing sound.

His new invention premiered in early 1762, and was played by Marianne Davies, a well known London musician, who learned to play his creation.  It was initially named the “glassychord,” but he changed the game to “armonica,” after the Italian word for harmony.  He built Ms. Davies her own instrument, and returned to Philadelphia with his.  The glass armonica was very popular and thousands were built and sold.  Both Mozart and Beethoven wrote musical pieces specifically for the instrument.

As there was no amplification for the instrument, one could only hear its sound in small settings and music halls.  As larger venues were built and used for concerts, it became impossible to hear the armonica’s sounds, and it lost popularity in the early 19th century.
