MOS 03 – S1E3 – Keeping Up With The Kryptonians

Welcome back to the Maid of Steel podcast! A podcast dedicated to the CBS television series, Supergirl! Karen and Emilee (that’s me) are back with a discussion about Season 1 Episode 3 “Fight or Flight”, which we’ve affectionately dubbed “Keeping Up With The Kryptonians” based off a brilliant line from Director Henshaw! This episode originally aired on Monday November 9, 2015.

There was a lot to love, in my own humble opinion, about the third episode of this television show’s freshman run. I like to consider myself an objective person, someone who will keep an open mind by seeking opinions from a wide variety of people, but I can’t help but whole-heartedly disagree with the nay-sayers out there. I’m talking about the big-name couch critics, not Rotten Tomatoes (who happens to like the show! Go figure). I’m just not seeing the problems they’re raising, particularly as it comes to what many are dubbing the “Superman-sized hole” in the show. I find it altogether witty and charming, light and feel-good, while at the same time exploring contemporary issues and circumstances that affect society. Read more…

MOS 02 – S1E2 – Two Is Better Than One

Welcome back to the Maid of Steel podcast! Karen and I (Emilee) are back for Season 1 Episode 2 “Stronger Together” which originally aired on November 2, 2015. We both really enjoyed this episode, from the great quips by Cat Grant and one-liners by Kara, to the genuine heart-to-hearts between Kara and James and Kara and her sister Alex. Through two episodes, Supergirl is already proving that it has the acting chops to encompass the breadth of human emotions, and we are so thankful to have the opportunity to talk about it!

Kara had to overcome a very particular fear in this episode. And by fear I’m referring to the anxiety that overwhelmed her at the prospect of having a sitdown with Cat Grant. That they did a really good job of establishing a sort of mask for Kara’s fear at the beginning, so that when she could finally give her fear a name it was no longer a concern. The first thing she tells James is that there’s no way Cat wouldn’t see right through Supergirl and into Kara. But James points out that in spite of how closely Kara works with her boss, the woman doesn’t see her now. Read more…

MOS 01 – S1E1 – Up, Up And Away

It’s time! The Supergirl pilot has officially aired and it’s finally time to talk about it. The first episode of the season kicked off on Monday October 26 at 8:30/7:30C on CBS and not only won the night on network TV, but pulled in the highest viewership for any new fall TV premiere. As we are podcasting about this show, these numbers are very exciting. But it’s equally exciting to see a female superhero TV series get the kind of attention that this one has pulled in so far. Neither Karen nor I would call ourselves feminists, but as women we are encouraged to see the effort the producers and writers of this show have put forth in order to inject a depth of realism into its female characters.

Also known as the Bechdal-Wallace Test. This test describes three rules to gauge whether a piece of fiction incorporates “active female characters” into its premise. There must be at least two women who talk to each other about something other than men is basically what the test comes down to. A horrifyingly low number of films currently meet this requirement. Whenever a subgroup of individuals are overwhelmingly reduced to a generalized activity, their contribution to the overall product is limited. Their purpose isn’t to support, but rather to enable, the plot. Read more…

MOS 00 – Introductions

Welcome to the Maid of Steel podcast! We are so glad you are embarking with us on this journey to follow Supergirl on CBS, because we are excited to have the opportunity to talk about the show. Karen and I (Emilee) a take a few moments at the beginning of this podcast to tell you a little about ourselves and also what drew us in to wanting to podcast about Supergirl before diving into the show and what we know so far about it.

What’s In A Name
The name Maid of Steel is kind of a play on Man of Steel, but also a pun – as in made of steel. Sometimes I feel like having to explain it makes it lose some of it’s effect, but I believe it’s worth mentioning largely because of the way our culture has purported certain words having to do with women. There is a very cool scene in the pilot where Kara questions Cat Grant’s use of the word “girl” in Supergirl, and both Karen and I think that our podcast name speaks to this same point. We are proud to be women! To be girls! And so far this show is reclaiming the word for its original intent. Maid comes from the word maiden, which simply means “young woman”, particularly an unmarried one. We don’t find it derogatory, and hope that you don’t either! Read more…
