Welcome to the Maid of Steel podcast! We are so glad you are embarking with us on this journey to follow Supergirl on CBS, because we are excited to have the opportunity to talk about the show. Karen and I (Emilee) a take a few moments at the beginning of this podcast to do some introductions, tell you a little about ourselves and also what drew us in to wanting to podcast about Supergirl, before diving into the show and what we know so far about it.
What’s In A Name
The name Maid of Steel is kind of a play on Man of Steel, but also a pun – as in made of steel. Sometimes I feel like having to explain it makes it lose some of it’s effect, but I believe it’s worth mentioning largely because of the way our culture has purported certain words having to do with women. There is a very cool scene in the pilot where Kara questions Cat Grant’s use of the word “girl” in Supergirl, and both Karen and I think that our podcast name speaks to this same point. We are proud to be women! To be girls! And so far this show is reclaiming the word for its original intent. Maid comes from the word maiden, which simply means “young woman”, particularly an unmarried one. We don’t find it derogatory, and hope that you don’t either!
Cougar’s Comic Corner
As we mention on the podcast, every week (hopefully) there will be some tie-in to the comics. Whether it’s a character, a storyline, or what have you, Karen (The Scarlet Cougar) will be giving us some material to go after to round out our knowledge of the DC Universe. Already we know that there is an NSA character named Hank Henshaw, played by David Harewood, whom Karen is confused by in this particular role (in a good way!). So for our “homework” this week, she’s giving us Reign of the Supermen from 1993.
Check it out, check back in, tell us what you think!

Next Week
The pilot airs on October 26 at 8:30/7:30C! It will be airing a half-hour later than it’s normal timeslot, so don’t be caught off guard in week 2 when it is on at 8/7C! We’ll remind you on the podcast.
Things I learned from episode #0 of Maid of Steel:
* Emily’s innocence is so adorbs.
Not knowing scifi doesn’t get Emmys / Oscars cuz it’s scifi
(As opposed to being on The CW vs a Big Four network)
Mixing up Emmys and Oscars
Not getting references before 1990
* Karen’s reactions mirror’s Kevin’s on Arrow Squad to Emily’s not getting old references. I can’t wait for the podcast crossovers!
* The first plausible explanation why 20something woman would accept the label “Super*girl*” when she’d prefer “Super*woman*”. (Basically, the Agent Carter motto that she’s knows her worth, her value–and accept the name as a compliment, focusing on the “super” part. As a child of the 1970s, when the ERA and NOW and the woman’s movement peaked, I still have bristle at referring to women as “girls” even tho many women today accept it, but I digress.)
* A rising suspicion that maybe Emily DOES get some of those older references and maybe FAKING ignorance at times (to lower our guard perhaps? to catch us unawares? and of course as “Ms. Ice”, her normal “cool” unflappable response to questioning makes it hard if not impossible to prove. You win this time, Ms. Ice!)
* Where Emily is bringing the new perspective, Karen’s bringing the comic book lore to the show. I had bought comics before, during and after THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN, and knew of the four replacements to star in the then four Superman series, SUPERMAN, THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN, ACTION COMICS and SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL, the Superboy, Cyborg Superman, Steel and the Last Son of Krypton, but had totes forgot the details of Cyborg Superman, much less how it connected to the character who heads DEO in SUPERGIRL. So I get to learn stuff from the podcast too. And learning is half the battle! Yo Joe! (Sorry, Emily, that’s a 1980s reference–or do you already know that, eh?)
I am particularly happy to see that we clarified, or supplemented, the reason behind Kara accepting the term Super*girl*. That was one thing both Karen and I were intent on doing! Very glad it came across π
And I do get SOME references! π I do like keeping you on your toes, though.
Yooooo Joe! Ken, I agree with you. These two ladies are great! I enjoyed the first ep and am looking forward to listening all season
I am so excited for your guises podcast I was looking forward to having another podcast to listen to on golden spiral media I can’t wait to listen to more of your commentary of the season of Supergirl Mena steel out
Thanks Man of Steel! Glad to have you on board!!
I know I’m late to this podcast party but I hope to catch up soon. I have to say I was apprehensive about this podcast title so I’m glad you took the time to explain it in this summary. You’re introduction bit was funny.
So sad that “Continuum” ended; hope they’ll continue in some format.
Speaking of comics and relating them to the series, I know they probably couldn’t get Jessica DeGraw to come over and be Huntress, but what do two think of having a Huntress, I’d prefer Bertinelli, Supergirl team up? I know in the Earth-2 realm Helena Wayne and Kara are friends and they’ve done some nods with Helena Bertinelli and Kara in JLA issues so I’m wondering how you would feel about that in later episodes?
Cool story about meeting your husband at Destiny comics.
The pilot was great for sure! I do think they gave a good reason for why Kara shouldn’t hate “girl”, but I fully get why some people still take issue with it. I’m glad you included the feedback schedule for fans. Previews also has an online site you can access for those who don’t want to buy the books. I am glad they didn’t do a sexed up version of the costume.
No musical episodes please! Singing in a few scenes is fine but no musicals; just because your cast can sing doesn’t mean they should – I’m looking at you “Grey’s Anatomy”. That would have been a great episode if they just had Sara do background tracks like normal.
I’m glad to hear they’re doing close airings for the show because gaps can really affect spoilers and ratings. I like Cat so far; she’s very blunt but she’s good so far. Alex is definitely a fun character. I have to say I’m not a big Winn fan currently; I don’t find the jealousy plot appealing with him and I don’t like some of the comments he makes, I don’t want to spoil anyone in case they go in a comic direction, but I’ve heard things about him which could be interesting because the jealousy isn’t something that makes me interested in Winn. I can see doing some crossovers, but I wouldn’t want them doing them as often as “Arrow” and “Flash” do them and I certainly wouldn’t want to see it in the first season; you can make references to Emerald City or Central City but I don’t want to see Oliver or Barry in the first season. Let Kara have a full season to herself, have two seasons even, before you do crossovers; I can get recurring characters coming over like Helena or someone, I don’t watch “Flash” (because my Flash is Wally) or “Arrow” (because I don’t care about Oliver that much) so I don’t know the recurring list, but no major crossovers with them or “Legends of Tomorrow” until Kara has had time to shine on her own. She’s under one shadow enough as it is she doesn’t need to be part of crossovers to try and jazz up her series. I understand it’s neat seeing a “Justice League Unlimited” set up with all the roster running around, but I want to see Kara’s world getting developed before they muddy it with crossovers.
Tatiana definitely should have won many awards by now. I’m looking forward to hearing your regular episode format episode. Nice introduction; great exit music!
Thanks for the thoughts, Aaron! I will check out Preview because I certainly don’t want people to have to spend much in order to keep up with the “homework.” Thanks for the tip!
And I’m sad you don’t watch Arrow π But I know that every show isn’t for everyone! Glad you are liking Supergirl thus far.
Comixology is a great place for old single issues; they do a lot of sales as well so you may want to add it to the “homework” section.
