In this episode of The Fringe Podcast, we review the season 4 episode, “Novation.” We discuss the new shapeshifters and how the Fringe team will be able to find them, Peter’s assistance in helping the Fringe team, the new typewriter, time slips, and the research of Dr. Truss. We also share our thoughts on Olivia and Peter’s relationship compared to Olivia and Lincoln’s relationship and we reveal our new podcast sponsor, Michael Purcell and Global Cash Card.

Viewing this episode and reviewing the episodes of season 4, I can’t help but wonder a little bit about the development of the plot so far. We ended last season and started this season with two universes dying. The most important thing to do was the fixing of the problems of the redverse in order to save both universes.
We saw Walter experimenting on a dead dove and I thought the purpose of it was to eventually revive the dead nature in the redverse.
But since then we have seen nothing concerning this problem. Instead we saw Olivia helping the redverse Fringe team with the case of a mass murderer, a monstruos fungus and the return of the shapeshifters (ok, the shapeshifters are interesting, but still).
I don’t know, what you think, but if I knew, my universe was at the point of crashing, I would focus quite a bit on solving that problem. I expected some kind of meetings between the two Fringe divisions (with a lot of argument, of course), and some kind of conjoint missions or operations, where one side distrusts the other side etc. But nothing, so far. That seems a little bit strange.
The two Fringe divisions where exchanging their files in the first episode, but haven’t worked on it at all so far. That reminds me of the first season, where Walter found his old files on his trials and experiments and nobody was ever going through them (except those isolated files they needed to solve the mystery of the week)
Besides that, I wondered, how Peter knows so much about the memory discs of the shapeshifters. The last time we saw him working on the memory discs was, when Olivia got “occupied” by William Bell. In that episode he was speaking to himself or dictating. And he said that he had not been able to extract information of the memory discs because it was all encrypted.
Now, he suddenly knows, that the memory discs have 3 partitions with information about the dna, something else and the mission of the shapeshifter. ??? And he is able to extract readable information from the discs in a couple of hours? Where does the knowledge come from?
Well, that’s it for now. Great podcast and blog.
Greetings from Germany
Here’s my theory regarding September’s “mistake” in 1985:
The way I see it, September’s distraction of Walternate in the lab (causing him to miss the cure) happened naturally as a result of his observation, nothing more. It’s a demonstration of the scientific principle that an observer invariably has an effect on what he is observing. On the other hand, diving into the lake to save Peter was an act of direct intervention in the timeline. I think that’s why September’s distraction of Walternate is now a fixed part of the timeline- because it was the natural result of mere observation -and his actions in the lake can be done or undone by his choice.
So since the Observers can’t undo Walter crossing over, they can undo Peter surviving, which, for results we don’t yet understand, seems to be the outcome they now want.
Great podcast, as always! Just thought about what you said about product placement, the hand caressing the hood of the car a few episodes ago was a little too obvious 🙂
I have a theory about the shapeshifters 2.0.
The skin of the new shapeshifters looked exactly like the skin of John Scott in the first season.
Maybe the blueverse fringe team accidentally prevented the development of the shapeshifters 2.0 in the first season.
In the first season, Walter was able to rescue John Scott, then John Scott was able to kill Richard Steig (the surviving twin brother). After his death in the car accident, John Scott was transferred to Massive Dynamic, where Nina ordered to question the dead body.
Maybe Massive Dynamic was able to retrieve enough information from the dead John Scott to prevent the further development of the shapeshifters 2.0 in some way (I still think that Massive Dynamic or Nina Sharp and William Bell aren’t evil, but intervened in important moments to prevent certain outcomes or developments).
In the new timeline, on the other hand, we learned, that Walter had not been able to save John Scott, so maybe Massive Dynamic was never able to question the dead body. Also, Richard Steig probably was able to escape (because in the first season, Peter helped to apprehend Richard Steig). So, I think, the unknown enemy was still able to continue the experiments on cell reproduction.
