Golden Spiral Media is excited to announce the launch of a new podcast production for the upcoming FOX show, “Almost Human.” Almost Human is a drama produced by JJ Abrams and created/written by former Fringe Executive Producer, JH Wyman! The show has officially been picked up by FOX for their 2013-2014 season. Almost Human is described as an action-packed police series set 35 years in the future, when officers are teamed with human-like androids. The cast will include Karl Urban, Michael Ealy and Lili Taylor.
Here’s the official FOX Press Release:
Almost Human: From Emmy Award-winning executive producer J.J. Abrams and creator/executive producer J.H. Wyman and starring Karl Urban, Michael Ealy and Emmy Award nominee Lili Taylor, ALMOST HUMAN (working title) is an action-packed police drama set 35 years in the future, when police officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids. An unlikely connection is forged when a cop with an aversion to robots and a robot with unexpected emotional responses investigate cases in a brave new world. ALMOST HUMAN (wt) is produced by Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Bad Robot Productions and Warner Bros. Television. The series is created by J.H. Wyman, who wrote the pilot. The series is executive-produced by Wyman, J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk. Kathy Lingg (“Person of Interest,” “Revolution,” “Fringe”) and Reid Shane (“Fringe”) are co-executive producers. Brad Anderson (“Fringe,” “The Killing”) directed and served as co-executive producer on the pilot.
We hope that the pilot will be shown at San Diego Comic Con in July. If it is, we’ll bring you our thoughts (spoiler free) after we’ve seen it. Stay tuned for more news and developments about this new show as information is available.
Here’s the Almost Human trailer.

This makes me very happy. So, so happy.
Who will be your co-host(s) Darrell?
It looks like Clint’s schedule will be allow him to do this one. We’ll know for sure once we get through the summer.
First thing I thought when I saw the trailer for this show was “I hope Darrell can get Clint to podcast with him about this!”
I’m not even kidding. VERY excited for the show and the podcast!
Clint has become the “American Doctor”.. will he or won’t he.. which incarnation did you like best?
So I guess.. ahh.. that makes Darrel the ‘companion’.. lol
Woohoo…I am totally there….now I just need a snazzy username
Namaste, Y’all. I’ll be tuning in to both the show and your podcast. Love you guys,
Peace Out
Hey guys, love listening to your podcasts! I’m looking forward to this podcast and have been a fan since The Fringe Podcast! <3
One question: will this podcast appear in the GSM All Inclusive Feed or is it a separate feed? Thanks guys!
Great question! It will appear in the GSM All Inclusive Feed AND it will have it’s own feed.
Hmmmmmm. Nickname???? I’m not too sure that LindaIsAlmostHuman works for me. I’m not THAT lost. But yay!
Woot! Can’t wait. It just makes a new show that much better when there’s a Golden Spiral Media podcast that accompanies. It’s a lifeline for nerds like me who function largely in a very non-nerd world. People who like to talk about the same things I like and are funny doing it? What could be more fun?
Awesome. Love the Revolution podcast but miss Clint. Will be great to hear from hom again
Hello from Australia!
I just heard Podcast #0 for Almost Human.
I’m so thrilled Clint is back!!!
I loved the Fringe Podcast and I can’t wait for both the show itself and your insight, wit and dry humor dissecting the good, the bad and the nerdy.
How awesome is that podcast theme song?
I SO agree, Alernakat! Fantastic music…
So excited you are doing a podcast for Almost Human! Looks like a lot of action, crazy humor, and the cool futuristic “stuff!” Will make the long summer much easier to bear! Loved Podcast Zero!
Woohoo!!! Can’t wait to listen. Great to hear that Clint will be back – awesomeness… Jeremy is such a sweetheart too, it would be fabulous to have you, Clint, AND Jeremy together for the podcast! Then you just need some girl power in the mix. I am really looking forward to watch the pilot episode of the show…
Hmmm. Wonder if I should use OrphanHuman as a handle? (big Orphan Black fan here… 🙂
The first thing I did when I heard Clint on the intro was a silent *squeeee* (I was at work) so hopefully he is able to stick around. If the show keeps up with the little bit of comedy we see in the preview that will be nice. I don’t know the two leads but I really like Lily Taylor. I will definitely be giving it my normal three episode trial run.
Looking forward to this one too. I’ve kind of felt disappointed in that other JJ project. I think I figured out what it was.. it wasn’t SciFi at all.. but more supernatural. Too much McGuffinism for me just to move the plot along.
Wyman (for all his protestations at not being SciFi literate) really seems to respect the genera and considers, if not takes input from the fans. He’s got a wide open mind and takes to new things really well. I especially like his “Crazy Ivan’s” in the plotlines.
So I’m pinning all my hopes on Wyman’s new found command of the force.
Karl Urban is a puzzle as an actor, he could be good or he could be just another James Bond actor. He does American dialects really well.. just hope he doesn’t slip a Mint Julip in there from time to time.. McCoy was way over the top.. “enough with the cliches”
I liked Karl Urban best in the Riddick Chronicles, so Darrell if you haven’t seen it (its a plural singular “it” movie) look it up. Clint may or may not have seen it.. I don’t know if Pitch Black is his style.
Suffice it to say Karl does a good Marty McFly imitation, he makes a good manipulatee.
One of the things about Blade Runner was the revelation that Deckker was a Synthetic as well.. I caught a hint of that.. robot cop of the future? Hmm.. hope not. Hope it was a tease by Wyman to throw us off and he goes his own way.
Wyman if your listening beware the curse of 1962 “Creation of the Humanoids” its on Netflix, just watch the trailer.. just sayin
Another show I am going to watch BECAUSE OF YOU! I had not heard of Revolution until I got the episode 0 for that (I subscribe to the GSM all inclusive feed). And now I am hooked on that.
And now I will be watching ‘Almost Human’ because of you mentioning it.
PS – if you didn’t like Dallas ComicCon check out the Phoenix one, Memorial Day Weekend!
John Shuck.. yep I remember Holmes and YoYo. Old enough to have seen it first run.
Thing is I can’t recall if H&Y came before or after “Future Cop”.. probably after.
Future Cop ironically had a lot in common and “looked” alot like a Will Smith Movie forty years later “iRobot” no relation to the Isaac Asimov story. The movie version of iRobot had a plot “a lot like” a Mark Hamill movie called “Slipstream” which featured an Android accused of killing his master and hunted by a Bounty Hunter (Hamill’s character).. thing was the Android was reluctantly guilty too… and he presaged Lt Commander Data of Star Trek… for other reasons. Taking the long view and out of order.. all of these stories kind of play around the edges of the same theme.. which reminds you of Asimov’s original Anthology of Robot stories that began with his iRobot novellas.
The 70’s had a lot of strange synthetic police officers.. must have been the Polyester Leisure suits getting to the Producers back then.. anything seemed possible.
The weirdest was probably the “synthetic” customers of the “Highway Man” in the pilot episode.. designed to replace irasciple humans as the “perfect” corporate consumer… of course they had to look human in order to “perfectly” replicate human consumption patterns.
I’m SUPER EXCITED about this show!! While some of these issues have been covered in shows like Star Trek Alien Nation and Holmes and Yoyo (anybody remember THAT one?), and, of course, Blade Runner, I’m hoping there will be enough ground that hasn’t been covered yet, especially in this new environment. Knowing J.J. & J.H., that won’t be hard!
Speaking of Holmes and Yoyo, I remember a scene where Yoyo was eating a tuna salad(I think) sandwich, and was asked by Holmes about how could he eat being a robot. Yoyo simply takes a waste bag from his side when he’s done “eating”. Will this possibly mean Tuna Salad Sandwich Bet? Really looking forward to this show AND the new podcast!
I’m in on this one. What a great trailer! Glad Clint will be back for an encore.
Oh need we mention Russel Crowe playing the synthetic “Gamer villian” come to life as the living breathing Makerbot SID in Virtuosity (1995)
Although mostly I think it comes down to people wanting to explore the human condition through their creations.. aka Battlestar Galactica (the modern one) the old Battlestar Galactica attributed the Cylons to an ancient but then “extinct” Reptillian race that no longer existed.. and left the reason for the Cylonic Wars to be explained by the next generation.
Blending a human soul with a machine is a common enough theme, see RoboCop for an example.. kinda reminds me of the Demigod status of Hercules.. part man.. part god.. but neither. Denied entry into Heaven but also denied peace on Earth.
Ray Kurtzweil is hard at work over at Google on “the big brain” project to replicate human consciousness on a machine.. as big as “it has to be” using current tech.. and feeding it the sum total of human knowledge.. or at least according to Google.
I’m rather more interested in the small scale.. what happens when we can “replicate” or “Even” bluntly back up human memory? Surely there will be an instant market for Alzheimer patients.. but what happens to those “human photographs” after their bodies are gone? Will the Dead hate or envy the living? Human memory is not the sum total of a human, there is the physical body and possibly the inate soul to consider as pieces to the parts. But how much do you require to achieve citizenship? Corporations are now citizens. It seems a story worthy of William Gibson.
We question the rights of a Clone, what of a memory what re-encarnates an artifical body?
Not even RoboCop dared go that far.. they only placed a human brain in an articial body.. a brain in a box with a human face.. somewhat like that movie “Source Code”.
There is the hapless victim of technology, to whom its done without his knowledge.. suppose he were pitted against an individual who chose to do it to himself? Battle of the Mechs?
We are so close to “printing” organ skeletons on which to scaffold and grow stemcells from humans.. to rebuild broken bodies. and then this type of story will be passe.. any articial humans will be relics of the past.. stuck in a limbo between… “why did they do that”.. and “who cares” we’ll never do it again.
What is the RSS feed for this podcast? I heard it on the Fringe podcast, but I want to sub to this one too.
