Did you go see Batman V Superman? In the beginning did you think to yourself “Why are they telling this story again?” Bruce Wayne goes to the theater with his parents and his parents are killed. This is the pivotal event that lead to him becoming Batman. You know the story, but do you know the whole story? What about Gotham? In many ways it is the City itself that gives rise to the vast cast of characters.

Bruce is not the only man with a tale to tell here. In fact he is not even yet a man at all, but a boy. When I speak to other fans of Comic Book Shows their main reason for not watching Gotham is the absence of Batman. While it is true that he is not there in his most recognizable form. You can see some defining characteristics in young Bruce through masterful writing and superb acting.

gotham-penguinThe darkness and corruption of the City has consequences. There are rival Mob Bosses and apathetic Citizens. People are all too willing to turn a blind eye. The mild mannered Medical Examiner with a knack for riddles has committed a murder. A young man named Oswald that used to have no power and did small jobs for the Mob rises to the top only to be knocked down again. Now with the discovery of his long lost Father will he find the strength and resources to climb the ranks in Gotham once again?

Do you know the story of Selina Kyle? She knows the dark alleys of this City. She knows how to slink by undetected with the cunning of a cat. In a recent episode Bruce has chosen to leave his mansion and join Selina on the streets. There are lessons that books, newspapers, and even Alfred could never teach him. This show also gives such wonderful depth to the character of Alfred. Gotham offers a perspective I believe we haven’t seen before. The old saying that there are two sides to every story is very appropriate in this case.
