What does it mean to be Human? How do we define our place in society? What is it that makes us feel fulfilled? These questions and many more are being explored in a new show called Humans on AMC. The first family we meet has two working parents and three kids. The house is in a bit of chaos because both parents have had to work extra hours. Joe decides he is going to get current with the others in his neighborhood and purchase a Synth.

In the world in which this show is based society has embraced the use of Synths. They are robots that are built to look like humans. They help out in the home with chores and childcare. In the workforce Synths are given the undesirable jobs such as janitor and telephone operator. Joe thinks a Synth will be a wonderful gift for his wife Laura so that they can spend more time as a family.

When Joe brings the new Synth home his youngest daughter Sophie names it Anita. As soon as Laura meets Anita she is defensive. Having a Synth makes Laura feel as though she is less of a wife and mother. The sense of unease is increased when Anita states she is better than Laura. Anita says she has the advantage because she never gets tired or frustrated. She is also faster and more efficient. Having Synths as part of society is affecting Laura’s oldest child Maddy. She feels there is no point in trying hard in school because Synths will soon be programmed to do all the jobs.

Anita seems different from other Synths. She does not share downloads with other synths in the neighborhood and she seems to have more empathy and human emotion. In a flashback we meet four Synths and a human companion. Anita is among this group but her friends are calling her Mia. What or who are they running from? In present day another member of this group Niska is forced to be a sex bot. Niska is enraged by the inequality between humans and Synths. In her rage she begins to kill humans.

Dr Milliken was involved in the program that developed the synths. He was forced out of the program when he had a disagreement with his partner Dr Estler. Dr Estler wanted a different kind of Synth. He wanted to give them true consciousness. He wanted them to experience pain and love. Dr Milliken thought this was crossing a line and was dismissed from the project. The code to make these aware synths is hidden in the programming of the original group. If they can all be united more aware synths can be produced. What does this mean for the future of the human race? People are angry and afraid. These “dollies” are taking their jobs and ruining their marriages.

They are made in our image but what if they are not under our control? Tune in and find out Sunday at 9/8c on AMC. Need to see it from the beginning full episodes available on AMC.com
