Talking through Last Day on Earth

This content has been moved and can now be found here.

Hey Survivors!!! It’s Brian here. Ruthie usually handles this side of the podcast but it was her 40th birthday on Wednesday and we wanted to get the episode out ASAP so I volunteered to pinch-hit for her at the last minute and swing the bat [play my rimshot sound effect!!!] to get this episode out for you!!! 🙂 It’s time to discuss The Walking Dead Season 6 finale, S6E16 “Last Day on Earth”. 🙂

NOTE: OK, first off… Something came up on Tuesday night, and we didn’t have enough time to record a full-sized finale episode. We considered postponing but decided to record what we could and get something out to you rather than release a full-sized episode later. We decided we would hold back feedback and predictions from this episode and focus on ratings, awesome sauce and any speculation on this episode’s elephant in the room – who experienced the wrath of Lucille. But we aren’t stopping there…

Later this week, we’ll be recording and releasing a SECOND episode that will cover feedback, death predictions as well as anything else that comes in by Thursday 6 PM Eastern, 5 PM Central. You can give us feedback what you specifically thought about this episode of the podcast (more on that in a sec), your “who died” predictions, overall season 6 impressions and anything else you want to discuss. You can visit our Facebook Group or at goldenspiralmedia.com/feedback. Send in Fear the Walking Dead feedback, too, though we’ll cover that next week.

About the finale: Who’s Negan??? I think Abraham finally has his answer!!! 🙂 And boy, does he! Jeffrey Dean Morgan came out swinging and made a big impact on this finale [rimshot!]. Seriously, though, he was everything I had hoped Negan would be, and more, and I can’t wait to see him become a formidable presence in Season 7 and beyond. Kudos for JDM for such an AWESOME performance that’s so good you may pee-pee in your pants. 🙂 Sorry, that’s a Negan reference. I couldn’t resist. 🙂 Rick and our group were long overdue for a comeuppance, and we finally see the Saviors “first-stringers” instead of their “redshirt freshmen”. The arrogance Rick had developed washed away as he clearly came to realize he had no idea what life was like in the “New World Order”. We also see Morgan face some inner demons while rescuing Carol, who is trying to run away from hers, as they both deal with that unlikeable Savior jerkface hellbent on watching Carol suffer and die before he dies from his own injuries.

This finale was a mixed bag for us. Initially, I loved the episode, except for… you know… and I certainly loved the last two acts, but my rating lowered as we discussed it further. Ruthie found big flaws in the story, and we both uncovered more as the “calm discussion” continued. We ended up reaching an agreement on our rating.

And speaking of who died… we don’t know!!! Are you as infuriated as I am/was? You’re about to hear a rare rant from me on this podcast. I was very upset by the decision not to reveal the victim. Now, mind you, I’ve got no issues with cliffhangers. I love them!!! The problem is that this was a BAD cliffhanger, one that could literally be revealed in a single shot, and one that makes it impossible to mourn the death of a beloved character, whoever that maybe, over the long hiatus. This show has done great cliffhangers in the past. Remember Terminus??? Now, I’ve mellowed out a bit since I recorded this. The whole Negan scene is brilliant and terrifying and one of the best things the show’s ever done, before the fade to black. However, I still believe this was a bad decision and that there are reasons why they may be surprised by what I think they are and who I believe is responsible for them. One thing I didn’t mention during the recording was that AMC is behind the big TWD PR machine for the show, so all that over hype we always get can be pointed straight at the network, not the producers or actors. That may give you a hint where this rant goes. I’d love to hear back from you on what your opinions are on the subject and what you thought of my rant in general.
