[sc:tctop]One of the most successful film series to be based on a video game, “Resident Evil” hit the zombie sweet spot which is still going strong today. Before “The Walking Dead”, before the remake of “Dawn of the Dead” but well after “Mortal Kombat” (thank god) it lit the world on fire.
RESIDENT EVIL
A virus has escaped in a secret facility called “The Hive,” turning the staff into hungry zombies and releasing the mutated Lab “Animals” that they were studying. The complex computer shuts down the base to prevent infection. The parent corporation sends in an elite military unit, where they meet Alice, who is suffering from amnesia due to exposure to nerve gas. The military team must shut down the computer and get out, fighting their way past zombies, mutants, and the computer itself, before the virus escapes and infects the rest of the world. Alice must also come to terms with her slowly-returning memories.

I have to say I think “Resident Evil” had the best promo trailers of the series, I still remember the one that seems like a cosmetic commercial but is really an advertisement for the movie. A lot of classic lines from this film. I’d definitely rate is as number one or at least one of the two tied for the first position as far as series ranking goes; three would be it’s competition for me because I liked most of the characters in three more than I did one.
One had good characters, but as a group I liked “Extinction”‘s line up better; I was admittedly mostly into RE1 for Michelle Rodriguez and then Milla.
The commentary for “Resident Evil” was great as well, “Yo! Yovivich! We’ve been working together for 6 months, how do you not know how to say my name?!” “There’s no Y in your name.” and “There’s yogurt behind that door – go get it!” are some of my favorite cast teases during it.
I definitely didn’t get the “Alice In Wonderland” connections until Michelle Rodriguez talked about it in the commentary.
Is it just me or would anyone else love to see it revealed in Milla’s final film as Alice that Alice is a secret Wesker?
Going back to the lore of the first game the T-Virus was invented to help the Wesker family and Alice has always been the one to bond the most with the virus so what if during the testing stages “Alice” volunteered to have it tested on her and it worked but a downside was her memories were erased (thus she wants to turn in Umbrella versus protect it like she did before), but not wanting to lose a source of information Albert kept her close by as Alice (maybe a nod to her favorite childhood book) and gave her the job of security head for the Hive which allows the scientists there easy access to her and allows her skills to be used because maybe Alice before the memory wipe was also good at fighting so the position worked? I just think it would be really interesting if the good guy was actually a bad guy and we see in the final film a character refusing to work with Alice and wanting to kill her because they know the truth of who she is. It would also work with Albert’s dislike of Alice because you could chalk it up to sibling rivalry and him being jealous it worked mainly for her but not him.
If Alice is just some lucky person who bonded with the virus that’s fine too, but I’ve just always thought that would be an interesting twist and callback to the original game lore.
The Spence reveal was great! His hand twitch when the vial breaks was perfect! I agree, the open ended ending was good for this film because it continued the drama of what was Umbrella going to do; I don’t think the writers had a planned sequel in mind at that point, they clearly had ideas enough to set up the Nemesis Project but it’s not like they had part two ready to go the second this one wrapped.
Spence and Alice may have been intimate, but I wouldn’t call their sleeping together a romance. Zombie dogs are a must character in these films! Red Queen was a good villain. Oh the “Rain with the axe” scene is one of my favorites; the Rain-Alice moments in this film are my favorite parts. While Alice was the lead in the film, Rain was definitely my favorite character; Michelle Rodriguez was in “S.W.A.T.” where she played Officer Chris Sanchez and she did live. A tidbit not mentioned in the podcast, but some viewers may notice Spence’s handwriting changes in the movie…Greg (Spence) didn’t write the notice Alice originally read, it was one of the crew, Greg only writes the note in the flashback. Nice choice for the “break” music in this podcast episode.
I’m sad you’re only doing the first three films, but I look forward to the other two discussions.
