Dear Diary:
Mystic Falls will never be the same. There has been witches, werewolves, hybrids, vampires and doppelgangers. One girl has been in the center of it all. Long before there was a “clone club” Nina Dobrev showed us all how it was done. She portrayed sassy Katherine Pierce, sweet Elena Gilbert and ancient Amara with style and grace.

There was never any doubt which character was on the screen. They were doppelgangers so they looked identical. However Nina’s posture, clothing style, and line delivery left the viewer sure which character was on the screen. That also included when those crazy doppelgangers were impersonating each other.

Elena Gilbert has been the epic love of two brothers. She always put her friends and town first. That cost her mortal life and began her immortal one. Katherine also found her heart torn between the Salvatore brothers. Katherine is a strong woman who has been a vampire for a long time. After all her years on Earth Katherine learned one thing. She always put herself first. Amara is the original doppelganger. The way Nina portrayed Amara who was crazy after years trapped as a supernatural anchor was acting perfection

Elena has suffered so much. She has lost her parents. She has saved both her loves from great peril. Her brother was murdered. There is always someone or something supernatural threatening her town. The cure for Vampirism has been taken and there is beautiful symmetry in Elena beginning and ending her part in the series as a human. What will her fate be as the season comes to a close? My hope is that Elena will get a happy ending after all her years of pain and heartache.

What will The Vampire Diaries do without their leading lady? Will the series shift to cover less romance? Perhaps to focus on the lives of the Salvatore brothers and their over a century of adventures. Only the season seven premiere in the fall can answer that question. Will you miss Elena? I for one will miss Nina Dobrev and all the lovely ladies she has portrayed. She has given us six years of mystical fun and romance. Tune in Thursday May 14 at  8/7c to the CW and say goodbye as The Vampire Diaries turns a page.
