It has been a thousand years since life as we know it. The Earth has reclaimed cities and replaced them with lush forests. The World is divided into four lands. The Ancient Humans are nothing but a memory. In this New World the Elves rule and the Trolls and the Rovers are not too pleased.
Princess Amberle is looking for more out of life than luxury. She decides to run the Gauntlet. It is a tradition among the Elves. The first seven to cross the finish line become members of the Order of the Chosen. Those Elves serve to protect the Ellcrys. This magical tree stands guard against the realm where demons are held. There has been peace in the Elven kingdom for so long that the younger Elves view the legend of the Ellcrys to be a fairy tale. That is until the tree starts showing signs of sickness. When Amberle places her hand on the Ellcrys she sees terrible things. Death, destruction and demons all across her land. These disturbing visions cause her to run away.
Wil Olmsted is running too. He feels there is nothing left for him in Shady Vale after the death of his mother. He is a half Elf who is looking for a purpose. A place to belong. He has always been too human for the Elves and too Elven for the humans. The reputation of his crazy Father follows him. His Mother’s dying wish is that he take these mysterious blue stones that his Father left him and find the Druid.
Allanon lay sleeping for 30 years as magic lay dormant. When the Ellcrys began to weaken it cried out to him. He awoke with a prayer on his lips that magic would awaken and help him on his quest. He rushed off to see Eventine, the King of the Elves. Allanon has trouble convincing the Elves the trouble is real. He tells them that they will know that these things they call fairy tales are real when they “rip out their throats”.
When the first leaf falls a great demon named Dagda Mor is awakened. He is too weak to take physical form so he sends a Changling out to do his bidding. Eventine is unaware of this danger hiding within his castle walls disguised as another. He only knows the Ellcrys must be saved.
Amberle returns, with Will in tow, having met him on her journey. Will was on a quest to find the Druid when in reality Allanon found him. He teaches Will about the elfstones and the price you pay for using magic. He also tells Will his true history. He is of the Shannara bloodline. A family that was thought to be gone.
There is only one hope for the Ellcrys and the fate of the four lands. Amberle, Will and a Rover girl named Eretria must go on a quest. They must take the seed of the Ellcrys tree to the blood fire before the demons take over the land. Can a princess the last Son of Shannara and a Rover girl save the world from evil? Join the adventure every Tuesday on MTV at 10/9c and find out.

Great recap of the season so far. It’s been many years since I read the Shannara books but from what I can tell they’re following book two pretty close. I love catching the little easter eggs referencing things that happened in book one. They’re not important enough to confuse non-book readers, but they’re fun to pick out for those of us who have read them.
What I’m curious about is how far in the book will they reach this season.
