[sc:tctop]We debated in our first instalment discussion if “Resident Evil: Apocalypse” was a planned sequel. Well, here we are. Cory and Ruthie are venturing out of The Hive and into Racoon City to get a broader view of the T-Virus mythology. Can it live up the hype and success of the original?
RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE
Alice, having escaped from the Umbrella facility, finds Raccoon City overrun with the undead. Along with a group of survivors that includes Jill Valentine, she must find the daughter of Dr. Charles Ashford, who will then provide them with a way out of the city before it is nuked by Umbrella in a cover-up attempt. Meanwhile, they are being hunted by the Nemesis, another one of Umbrella’s experiments.

I have to say this isn’t my favorite “Resident Evil” film, in fact I’d rate it as last on a list of the films. There were fun moments don’t get me wrong, but again I found myself not really getting attached to most of the characters; Jill was a good game callback (it’ll be interesting to see what they do with her and Chris in the final – there almost has to be a team up scene with them as they are the original game series leads so that would be the cherry callback) but it took warming up to her…she was cool, but very similar to Alice so it was like why should I invest in her when we have Alice? LJ was great for the comedy of course, Terry (reporter) was okay, and I really liked Sergei (one of the S.T.A.R.S. agents) and Angie but I didn’t get attached to Carlos even though I had loved Oded previously in “The Mummy” series and Jill’s partner was sad to see go but he didn’t last long enough to really connect to…I also felt for Matt, but he wasn’t one of the characters I loved. I liked Matt but I didn’t love him. That plus the extreme jump to Alice with powers just turned me off.
Alice’s powers were cool, but I do prefer her more mentally powered than able to jump overpasses if that makes sense. The bad guy was evil, but debatably scary when they had just faced the Red Queen with her abilities; maybe because it felt more about the action than the characters is the reason it’s off to me but RE2 is just not my favorite.
That’s some very “The Mummy” type music in the opening, very fitting for this podcast episode.
Technically there’s two rerunning characters from RE – Alice and Matt, Matt just looks different. I don’t think Red Queen and Angie are the same. LJ gets listed as “Non-Combatant – Zero Threat” after he drops his guns; like Spence from RE1, Cain has a really good karmic death moment for his exit, that was a satisfying ending for him. I recognized Ian Glenn from “Tomb Raider”. Good points Ruthie about how the group found Alice at the end of this movie!
I agree with Ruthie about the graveyard scene, it’s cool but not believable to the virus spread.
I look forward to the Triplecast RE3 podcast recap!
