What I Learned Yesterday:

Tomorrow will mark a new milestone for Stuff I Learned Yesterday: It will be the 100th episode! Since tomorrow is your day, I’m going to use this day, milestone eve if you will, to share some stuff I’ve learned along the way.

The last time I did a milestone episode was episode 24 when I had just hit the one month mark. I read through the transcript of that episode today and found it really interesting. A lot of what I said then is still true. This podcast has been one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done, and it’s been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done.

I think that’s a typical pairing. No pain, no gain if you will. When I look across the most rewarding things in my life and the biggest achievements of my life, they are not only representative of my proudest things, they also represent the things I’ve worked hardest for and fought the hardest for.

This podcast has also taken some unexpected and rewarding turns along the way. For example, some of you that have called in for the Friday Forum have really inspired others. In some cases I’ve had listeners contact me to see if I can get them in touch with another listener so they can learn more about their story or help them in some way. These instances of the community reaching out to the community are the most rewarding thing of all.

I’ve also been inspired by the comments that you’ve made via iTunes reviews. For example, Tedd57 said, “I’ve learned to trust Darrell. I started listening to GSM’s The Fringe Podcast back in 2009. Over the years I’ve listened to GSM’s other TV And movie related podcasts and really enjoyed them. I usually listen to them as I fall asleep and then pick up the next night from the last thing I remember. Something else that I’ve learned is that Stuff I Learned Yesterday podcasts are different. These short episodes kept me awake because they inspired me and made me think. Now, rather than listening to the podcasts as thee last part of my day, I listen to them when I wake up as a great start to a new day. I recommend finding a place in your busy day for these wonderful stories.”

TheRealDCoff said, “Over the years Ive listened to all the podcasts that Golden Spiral has put out and wasn’t to sure what to expect from this one. The Fringe Podcast was the “Gateway” podcast for me and the production quality of that as well as any GSM cast is what I judge all other by. So, with that in mind I gave this one a listen and I’m glad I did! This podcast is both inspiring and challenging to me, as a 27 year guy, and to the countless others who contribute and listen to this show. And I’m sure it’ll be to you as well. Darrell is an excellent storyteller and is transparent and real with his life lessons.

All of your iTunes reviews have been incredibly encouraging to me and I appreciate them immensely.

Derek Olsen joined the team 8 weeks ago and he has been a tremendous blessing. He not only relieves my workload on busiest day of the week, he not only helps relieve some of the pressure of coming up with fresh, impactful episodes 5 days a week, but he brings a valuable perspective and style to the podcast. I have another co-host lined up to take over one day of the week that I’m also really excited. She was originally set to start hosting last week, but she and her husband ended up moving into their new home last week. She’ll be starting soon and I’ll tell you more when the time is right.

By now you might be thinking, “Well, that’s real nice, Darrell, but have you learned anything over this time?” Yes I have.

Here’s what I’ve learned.

There is so much happening all around us every day. I regularly receive comments like, “I could never do that show because I don’t really learn that much.” Or, “I don’t know how you come up with so much stuff to talk about.” Honestly, it is a real challenge on some days, and other days, it just flows out and I’ll have ideas for 2 or 3 episodes all at once.

If you’re someone that thinks they aren’t learning anything, I’d like to challenge that. Maybe you aren’t the type to be able to put your life lessons into a story like I do. Maybe the stuff you’re learning doesn’t seem as inspiring, or important, or life changing as my stuff. I don’t know about that. Don’t sell yourself short.

What I’ve learned is that because I have put myself in a situation where I MUST come up with stuff to share with you, I’m a lot more aware of stuff around me. Literally everywhere I go, every conversation I have is now viewed through the lens of “what am I learning from this.” That’s not a bad thing.

Because I’m more focused on what I’m learning, I’m growing more and noticing more things that need attention in my life. I’m noticing others more. I mean, I’m seeing the needs of others, learning more by observation, and listening more.

So that’s my challenge to you. Maybe blogging is not your thing. Maybe podcasting is not your thing. That’s okay. Have you ever considered journaling? Grab a cheap notebook the next time you’re at the store and take a few minutes at the start or end of your day to reflect, meditate, and write down your thoughts. You’ll start noticing stuff you never realized that you noticed. You’ll grow at a faster pace because you’re more aware of stuff. And over time, you’ll see the growth rings of your life imprinted on those pages.

Whether this is your first episode, your 99th episode, or some number in between, thanks for listening. Let’s keep moving forward.

I’m Darrell Darnell and this has been stuff I learned yesterday.
