Welcome to Stuff I Learned Yesterday. My name is Darrell Darnell, I might have just had the best weekend ever, and I believe that if you aren’t learning, you aren’t living. In today’s episode of Stuff I Learned Yesterday I talk about the next season of Stuff I Learned Yesterday.

Today’s Fun Fact: Did you miss seeing this episode in the podcast feed when you woke up this morning? We’ll I’ll tell you more about that in a moment, but today just happens to be Be Late For Something Day! How perfect is that?!

There are some people who are just exceptional at putting things off and showing up late, and while normally we consider such behavior to be rude and entirely unacceptable, especially as a habit, Be Late For Something Day was established by the Procrastinators’ Club of America to tell us otherwise. Every day of our lives we are taught to follow rules and stick to schedules and not keep anybody waiting, but really, when has being kept waiting really hurt anyone? Never! That’s when, and in fact there have been important business connections have only managed to be formed because someone was late, and met when they otherwise wouldn’t.

The stress of sticking exactly to a schedule has been shown to be detrimental to the health and well-being of people, especially when failing to do so causes people stress. Know why it causes stress? Because people are worried about sticking to a schedule and cause themselves to get stressed out if they don’t. Slow down, enjoy the world you live in, and give yourself a break when you might not otherwise.

How to celebrate Be Late For Something Day
Take some time for yourself and allow yourself to be late for something. Good news is, since you’re planning it, you can make sure it’s not going to be something truly detrimental. See a small shop on your way to your destination that catches your fancy? Stop in and see what they have. Enjoying a conversation with someone at the bus stop and your bus comes along? Let it go, there’ll be another. Rushing to get to work on time? Slow down, drive safe, enjoy your morning commute and don’t let it stress you out. Be Late For Something Day is all about taking it easy and enjoying life rather than rushing around from check-point to check-point. (From daysoftheyear.com)

What I Learned Yesterday
King Solomon was the wisest person that ever lived and in the third chapter of Ecclesiastes he wrote:
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die;
A time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal;
A time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
A time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to seek, and a time to lose;
A time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to tear, and a time to sew;
A time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate;
A time for war, and a time for peace.

Within those words, tremendous wisdom is found, and if we take time to reflect on these words, we’ll find tremendous insight that will give us direction for our lives. And so it is with a reflective spirit that I bring you this episode today. This is an episode that I have been struggling to create for several months, maybe even a year. It’s an episode that I think is probably overdue.

This is episode 498 of Stuff I Learned Yesterday. Can you believe that? It’s remarkable I think. This Friday will mark the end of this season of SILY and we will have 502 episodes in the books. The next season will begin on October 10, finish on December 30, and that will bring us to 562 total episodes. With episode 562, we will turn off the lights and retire the Stuff I Learned Yesterday Podcast.

If you’ve been here for the entire ride or if you’ve gone back and listened to episode 1, you know why I started this podcast. In short, I wanted to create a podcast that would allow me to do something different. I had a desire to share lessons from life with all of you, hoping that things I’ve learned along this path of life would somehow bring encouragement, hope, joy, laughter, wisdom, and comfort to you. I hoped that in doing so, I might somehow make the world a better place.

I never expected this podcast to be easy. I also never expected it to be so hard. I don’t mind hard work. In fact, I love hard work. So it’s not because this podcast is hard that I have decided to retire it. I’m retiring it because I feel that it is the right time. The season to bring this podcast to end has come.

I simply don’t have anything left to give. That statement is probably not a surprise. It wasn’t long after I started this podcast that I invited Derek to join me. I then asked Mark and Mandy to join in. We then adjusted the release frequency of the episodes. Finally I decided to break the show into 12 week seasons and add five cohosts for each season. Even still, as this year has ticked by, I have found it increasingly difficult to find moments from my life to share. Crafting an episode was once a fun creative experience. They are now mostly a dreaded chore and source of stress. Quite simply, my well is dry.

This journey called Stuff I Learned Yesterday has been incredible. Here’s what I’ve learned.

I’ve learned that each new journey of life begins only when we decide to take that first step and there’s no way of knowing where it will end. To discover the end, we must first begin.

I’ve learned that there is plenty to be learned each and every step of the way when we take time to meditate, observe, and look at things from a fresh perspective.

I’ve learned that the next journey is only made clear when we’ve reached the end of the previous one.

I’ve learned that it does us no good to hang on to things longer than is healthy.

I’ve learned that Stuff I Learned Yesterday taught me far more than I ever expected.

This podcast has exceeded my expectations in every way possible. I have formed deeper relationships with my co-hosts, Derek, Mark, Mandy, Carrie, Mike, Geoff, John, Barb, and Emilee. I’ve also formed deeper relationships with our guest hosts, Joshua, Stephanie, Therissa, Faith, Karen, and Brian. And to each of you that have submitted Friday Forum stories, you’ve been a constant source of encouragement, hope, joy, laughter, wisdom, and comfort to me.

When we close the books on this podcast after the 562nd episode, I will look back at this podcast with extreme pride and a sense of accomplishment. Together, we have indeed made this world a better place.

We have made the world a better place by allowing ourselves to be vulnerable, share honestly, spread love, express appreciation, and show compassion. The most encouraging thing of all is these things are not dependent on a podcast in order to exist. You and I will continue to make the world a better place by practicing these same things in every day of our lives.

But we’re not done yet. As of today, we still have 64 episodes of SILY coming your way and I hope you’ll be a part of them. If you’ve never submitted a Friday Forum contribution, now is the time. Thank you for being a part of this journey with me. Let’s finish it strong, together.
