Welcome to Stuff I Learned Yesterday. My name is Darrell Darnell, it just so happens that I DID enjoy a pineapple shake from Sonic on Pineapple Day, and I believe that if you aren’t learning, you aren’t living. In today’s episode of Stuff I Learned Yesterday I’m excited to bring you a new type of episode called Friday Feedback.
Today’s Fun Fact: Today we enjoy music on-demand via mobile apps like Spotify, Pandora, and Apple music. But back when I was a kid if you wanted to take music with you, your best option was a Walkman. Most of you probably know this, but a Walkman was a portable cassette tape player that ran off of replaceable AA batteries. It gave music lovers to take the music of their choice with them whenever and wherever they wanted to.
The first Sony Walkman went on sale on July 1, 1979. Here are some fun facts about this revolutionary device.
- Walkman was chosen as a name partly because of the popularity of Superman in 1979.
- Other proposed names were Soundabout in the US, Freestyle in Sweden and Stowaway in the UK.
- By the end of the first month on sale only 3,000 units had been sold.
- The initial batch of 30,000 units sold out by the end of August and Sony had problems fulfilling orders for the rest of the year.
- 100 million units were shipped by 1992.
