Welcome to Stuff I Learned Yesterday. My name is Carrie Olsen. I have owned every version of the iPhone, and I believe that if you aren’t learning, you aren’t living. In today’s episode of Stuff I Learned Yesterday I share a lesson I learned on leading your passion.

Today’s Fun Fact: Everyone on earth is born with the ability to wiggle their ears, but if you don’t learn how early on, the muscle atrophies and you can’t learn any longer. I wonder what else we were born with the ability to do that we lost due to atrophy…

What I Learned Yesterday:
You hear follow your passion all the time. But a potential problem with that is that sometimes your passion turns out to not be profitable. And what do you do if you feel like you don’t have a passion, or you don’t know what it it is? It’s seems pretty impossible to follow something that you haven’t even found yet. Also, the idea of following something indicates that you’re at the mercy of it. Wherever it takes you, you just tag along. That idea doesn’t sound appealing to me. It actually sounds passive. I like the idea of having more control over my journey. A better idea is to lead your passion.

I worked in a lot of different industries from the time I was a teenager through adulthood. And along the way, I made a point of collecting skills from my jobs, as well as hobbies. In each job, I would look for unique opportunities to make an impact, even in simple administrative jobs. Because of this focus on making an impact, as opposed to just getting my work done and going home, I discovered and became good at many things that would later contribute to me starting a successful career in a field that I absolutely love — voice acting.

Here’s what I learned.

No matter your work circumstances, seek to do the best you can and learn as much as you can in your role. Always be looking for innovative ways to contribute. Collect skills and interests. Pay attention; there may be opportunities that you would love disguised as everyday tasks or that are tangential to your everyday tasks. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Look at every new opportunity as a tool or puzzle piece that you get to take with you as you build, cultivate and lead your passion.
