Welcome to Stuff I Learned Yesterday. My name is Darrell Darnell, my son’s 6th grade academic team won the state championship on Saturday, and I believe if you are learning, you aren’t living. In today’s episode of Stuff I Learned Yesterday I have a chat with my son about lessons he learned during the academic tournament.

Today’s Fun Fact: The first seedless grapes were kind of an accident. Thousands of years ago in the Middle East, a random genetic mutation caused a group of grapes to spontaneously abort their own seeds before the seeds could develop hard casings. The result: seedless produce. To reproduce the fruit, a sly farmer simply cloned the vine (with no seeds, there’s nothing to plant)—meaning that all seedless grapes today are direct descendants of that one mutated grape vine.

What I Learned Yesterday:
Today’s episode will be a bit different. Rather than share a story of a lesson from my own life, I’m having a conversation with my 11 year old son, Colby. His team won the state academic championship over the weekend, but had to overcome some significant hurdles while doing it.

I was really inspired by not only the positivity and resilience of the team of 6th graders, but I was also inspired by the actions of their coach. What was Colby thinking throughout the whole day? Did he lose focus or confidence? Did he give up or think they were going to lose? What did he learn during the process? Let’s find out!
I’m Darrell Darnell and this has been stuff I learned yesterday.
