Welcome to Stuff I Learned Yesterday. My name is Darrell Darnell, I enjoy Christmas much more since I left the retail world, and I believe that if you aren’t learning, you aren’t living. In today’s episode of Stuff I Learned Yesterday I’m pleased to bring you another installment of the Friday Forum.

Today’s Fun Fact: Merry Christmas everyone! We all have various traditions and things we enjoy doing on this day, and one of our favorite things to do is watch the Christmas movie classic, A Christmas Story. I love that TBS runs it as at 24 hour marathon beginning each Christmas Eve night. So in honor of A Christmas Story, here are some fun facts about the movie about Ralphie, the kid who wants nothing more than a Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle for Christmas.

  • Ralphie asks for the Red Ryder BB gun 28 times in the film.
  • For the infamous scene where Ralphie’s friend, Flick, gets his tongue stuck on the frozen flag pole, a hole was drilled in the pole with a suction vacuum to create the effect.
  • “A Christmas Story” opened Nov. 18, 1983, and played on about 900 screens, making about $20 million (about $48 million in today’s dollars). Some theater owners removed it from their screens before Christmas even came around, saying the film had been “played out.” Complaints were lodged, and the movie returned to select theaters and continued playing well into January 1984.
  • HBO premiered “A Christmas Story” in 1985, and it was played on a number of other stations during the holiday season until TNT started the 24 hour marathon tradition 19 years ago. It moved to TBS in 2004.
  • It is credited for inspiring “The Wonder Years” with its child-like, yet nostalgic point of view.
  • Peter Billingsley, who continues to act in movies, has also become a successful executive producer, with such credits as the blockbuster Iron Man and the holiday film Four Christmases.
