Welcome to Stuff I Learned Yesterday. My name is Derek Olsen, I’m excited about my hometown Kansas City Royals going to game 7 in the world series and I believe if you aren’t learning, you aren’t living. In this episode of Stuff I Learned Yesterday I share the story of how I came to be a host for Stuff I Learned Yesterday and what lies ahead after my final episode.
Friday Forum
I want you to be a part of the Friday Forum! Friday Forum is your opportunity to Share what YOU’VE learned, so that other listeners and I can learn from YOU. It can be a message as short as 30 seconds or several minutes long. It really doesn’t matter just as long as it’s something that will benefit others. What I Learned Yesterday:
I’ve mentioned a few times that I’ll be leaving Stuff I Learned Yesterday behind soon. And that day has come. Today is my final SILY show.
I thought it would be fun to trace back my steps to well before I started hosting the Wednesday slot to uncover how I got here.
Let’s start with graduating from Oklahoma State in 2005:
After that I…
- Worked in OKC
- Moved to KC
- Met Carrie
- Got married 2010
- Did a short sale on our house
- Read 48 days by Dan Miller
- Quit my job
- Wanted to start helping others with finances
- Went to Write to the Bank at Dan Millers house
- Got inspired and equipped to write and self-publish my first book (#1)
- Met Kent Julian while I was there
- Went to Kent’s SIF bootcamp in Atlanta in 2012
- Met Cliff Ravenscraft – Didn’t know he was going to be there.
- Told Cliff about Carries Downton Abbey podcast
- TV TALK – Three weeks later. Carrie was first host and I was a producer and a host for a year
- Met Darrell
- After TV Talk – Started contribution to SILY
- Started our own podcast on Money and Marriage
- Writing a new book
- Had a baby
Carrie started her own voice over business and replaced her income in just 6 weeks!! She put in her two weeks notice at her job today.
Together, Carrie and I are building the life we want to live.
We want to use our talents, do something we love, make a positive impact on the world, have flexible hours, be able to work from anywhere, and control our income based on the amount of value we add to other peoples lives. Not too much to ask, right?
Well, it’s possible. It takes a lot of deconstructing of the typical work model to do it, but it is possible.
Here’s What I Learned:
To move forward, sometimes you have to let go of bad things and good things. I’m leaving a very good thing here at SILY. Carrie is leaving a very good thing at her job. She loved it.
It’s a really exciting time for us right now.
We were talking about the future when she got home from work. Carrie said on of the things that gave her the confidence to put in her notice was to think of our lives as an adventure. This next chapter is just one more adventure that we are going to live.
Well, lets end our time together with a song, one of my favorites.
I’m Derek Olsen, so long everyone.
