Welcome to Stuff I Learned Yesterday. My name is Derek Olsen, I love cold weather and can not stand hot weather, and I believe that if you aren’t learning, you aren’t living. In today’s episode of Stuff I Learned Yesterday I share a lesson that I still need to learn.

Friday Forum:

I want you to be a part of the Friday Forum! Friday Forum is your opportunity to Share what YOU’VE learned, so that other listeners and I can learn from YOU. It can be a message as short as 30 seconds or several minutes long. It really doesn’t matter just as long as it’s something that will benefit others. You can participate in Friday Forum by visiting our Feedback Page or calling our voice feedback line at 304-837-2278.

What I Learned Yesterday:

I want things to be easy.

I almost always think things will be easier than they really are.

You know how it goes. A two hour project turns into a week long marathon.

The other day I came across one of those pictures with large font text across it on the internet somewhere. One of those motivational pictures that I like to call throw away life philosophies. I usually read them quickly and move on. But this one caught my attention.

It read… Don’t be upset by the results you didn’t get from the work you didn’t do.

OUCH! That’s a tough one.

I did a Google search and didn’t really find a source, so I have no idea who to credit for this harsh truth.

Don’t be upset by the results you didn’t get from the work you didn’t do.

Ouch again!

I am so guilty of this it’s not even funny. I want to be healthy and fit but rarely put in the work necessary. I want to be successful with my business but often don’t do what I know I should be doing. I want better friendships and relationships but I often don’t reach out to others.

And on top of it all, I sometimes get frustrated with my results in any of these areas. Of course it makes perfect sense to get poor results when you put in poor effort. But I still get upset because I want the results but don’t want to put in the work. It sounds so obvious when you put it this way, it almost makes me feel silly for having these kinds of thoughts.

So this phrase Don’t be upset by the results you didn’t get from the work you didn’t do really got to me.

This phrase hit me hard and forced a lot of inward searching. At first I didn’t like it because it sounded so harsh and unforgiving. I mean come on, where’s the grace here guys?! But after I let it sink in I came to appreciate the clear and direct truth.

It leaves no excuses. How can you argue with a truth like this one?

One thing I do like about it is how it puts the responsibility right where it should be. If you want something, you have to do the work involved to get it. There’s no other way. I’ll never be in shape if I don’t get my butt to the gym and do the work. And getting upset because I’m not in shape because I didn’t do the work is just insane.

So Heres What I Learned:

I learned that most of those motivational throw away philosophies are cheap. But every now and then one of them might hit you right where it hurts and that might be exactly what you need to change a thing or two in your life.

Oh, I also learned to not get upset with the results I didn’t get earn from not doing the work needed.
