Welcome to Stuff I Learned Yesterday. My name is Derek Olsen, I cut my sugar intake by 80 percent and feel fantastic, and I believe that if you aren’t learning, you aren’t living. In today’s episode of Stuff I Learned Yesterday I share a song by Paul Simon.

What I Learned Yesterday:

Today is my daughter’s six month birthday. She’s our first and my wife and I are still on cloud nine. I’m beginning to wonder if this feeling will ever fade. I hope not.

Our daughter is starting to do some really fun things. She can sit up on her own, hold her own bottle, and she’s even starting to mimic sounds. She can’t crawl yet, but she’s working on it.

Years before I met my wife and we had our baby I heard a song about being a parent that stuck with me. The song is by Paul Simon and its called father and daughter. I really liked the song right away and I was still years away from being a father myself.

The chorus goes like this:

I’m gonna watch you shine
Gonna watch you grow
Gonna paint a sign
So you’ll always know
As long as one and one is two
There could never be a father
Who loved his daughter more than I love you

Watching my daughter grow has been the most incredible experience of my life. She just learns things on her own, which I can’t explain. And she is so alert and curious, just soaking up everything that is happening around her. There are no words.

The chorus ends with, “There could never be a father who loved his daughter more than I love you.”

Wow, those are some powerful lyrics.

I’m sure most parents think that they love their kids more than anyone has ever loved another person. And while that can’t technically be true, it sort of is true. As long as we all think and feel like we love our kids more than anyone has ever loved someone, well then, it’s true. We all get to share the same feeling that we are loving someone more than what’s possible. What a cool experience to share with other parents.

My wife and I are really looking forward to the second six months of our daughters life. I guess she will learn to crawl, maybe even walk, and she might know a couple words too. I can’t wait to continue to watch her grow up. Good thing I don’t have to wait.

As fast as the time is going by, and as much as I want it to last longer, I am grateful. I know that I can’t slow time down, so I’m going to try to not wish it would last longer and just enjoy the ride.

Well, lets end this episode a little differently.

Here’s Paul Simon with his song Father and Daughter.
