Star Trek: Discovery – S1E5 – “Choose Your Pain”
This content has been moved and can now be found here.
On this episode of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Adam and I discuss Season 1 Episode 5, titled “Choose Your Pain”. We see our characters deal with the pain they are causing the tardigrade, Lorca is taken and then tortured by the Klingons, and come across the final main cast member, Lieutenant Ash Tyler, and meet an old character in Harry Mudd.
Choose Your Pain, Harcourt Fenton Mudd!!!
We also see the Klingon L’Rell again, who has moved up and is Captain of her own ship. The reveal of her having Tyler as a prisoner for seven months bring me more questions about Tyler and makes me wonder about Voq. Could they be one and the same?
It wouldn’t be the first time we see a Klingon be altered to appear human. We see this in The Trouble With Tribbles. Now, I am not sure enough about this possibility to declare him a spy, but I will be paying attention to this character going forward.
We also enjoyed the Saru scenes, especially with him dealing with his resentment of Burnham.
We both thought this was the best episode so far, and can’t wait for next week!

Great episode, both u guys AND Discovery! As to your main “Noooooo!” I think the entire kidnap & escape was a setup/ruse to get a spy on the ship…the Klingon family is said to be all spys and deceptive females…sacrificing a few unarmed Klingons to get their spy on board….and that white Klingon upstart leader sacrificed everything and got rapid deap programming to play the part…oh, and total body sculpting!
Questions of why the Klingon lady was so quickly a prison ship captain? Remember, THIS IS A SETUP! I’d bet my bippy this is gonna unfold.
I think this is a huge plot point and all will b revealed in time!
Oh, btw… Stamis mirror double? An interesting possibility, raised by another great trekker is that he might actually BE “The Traveler”! This would be a fantastic weaving together threads out there in the trekverse…and THIS is the power and exciting aspect of the show…the writers have repeatedly said it will all make sense in the end. I LOVE this slow reveal rather than the simple one off stories of the past.
