Welcome to Stuff I Learned Yesterday. My name is Darrell Darnell, tomorrow I’m taking my son to his first OU Sooners football game, and I believe that if you aren’t learning, you aren’t living. In today’s episode of Stuff I Learned Yesterday we’re back with another installment of the Friday Forum.
Today’s Fun Fact:
Like many of you, I get really excited about football this time of year. Last year I took my daughter to her first OU football game and after the game she immediately asked if we could go again this season. So tomorrow I’m taking both my kids for a fun day of BOOMER SOONER! We’re playing the Kansas Jayhawks, so here are some fun facts about each team.
- Kansas played their first football game as part of a three-game season on Nov 22, 1890 agains Baker. They lost 22-9.
- Their first win came 16 days later when they once again played Baker. The final was 18-12.
- Their first televised game was in 1952. They beat TCU 13-0.
- Their all time record is 579-610-58 (48.8% win) and their bowl record is 6-6.
- They have 5 major conference titles, winning outright in 1908 and 1930, and sharing the title in 1946, 1947, 1968,
- The Sooners played their first football game on November 7, 1895 against Oklahoma City. The Sooners lost 34-0 and it was the only game they played that season.
- The Sooners play on Owen Field at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Contrary to what many believe, the field is not named after Heisman Trophy winner Steve Owens. Instead it is named after Bennie Owen who coached the Sooners to three conference titles and helped raise money for the stadium they now play in.
- In August of this year, the Associated Press named the Oklahoma Sooners as the second greatest college football program of all time, falling just behind the Ohio State Buckeyes.
- Their all time record is 861-318-53 (72.0% win) and their bowl record is 28-20-1.
- They have 7 national championships, 45 conference championships, and 5 Heisman Trophy winners.
- OU leads the series against KU at 73-27-6 and has won the last 11 match ups.
