Music may not be the central focus of your life. But if you stop and think about it you will realize the power of music has a huge impact in your life. Our lives don’t have an epic John Williams, Hans Zimmer, or Bear McCreary soundtrack playing as we go about our lives. Or does it?

Fun Fact:

SILY 410 - The Power Of Music Bear McCreary

Composer Bear McCreary has composed over 32 soundtracks since 2004. 19 of those were for TV series. These include the iconic Walking Dead theme, Outlander, Constantine, and Battlestar Galactica. He has be nominated for 12 Emmy’s and other awards and won 5 of them.

The Power Of Music:

Music plays a huge role in all of our lives. That being said, you will probably hear a couple of SILY episodes from me dealing with music.

Music has been used through out the ages to celebrate life’s events like weddings, royal coronations, holidays, military victories, births, and deaths. Music is a key focus of my faith of Christianity. Music has been used to celebrate Christ’s birth, death & resurrection.

The power of music to shape our emotions is amazing. I can put on a joyful song and be cheered up. I can put on a reflective instrumental song and contemplate things. I can put on a sad song and consider the hard things of life.

Not convinced? Consider multi-million dollar industry of movie and television soundtracks. They are so powerful that they make or break movies. People rush out to buy them. Why because the songs remind them of the emotions they felt along with the images that were on the screen. They make artists and composers famous or increase their status. Adele’s single for the movie “Skyfall” has sold over 2 million copies.

We all sat down, in one way or another, and have made mix tapes. Whether they be on tapes, CD’s or play lists. We have our travel mix. We have the mix we make for someone we are trying to woo. We have our study mix. We make these mixes. Why? Because they focus us, they get us ready, they put us in a certain mood. Music is supremely powerful and it moves us in so many ways. It stirs up our hearts. It stirs up our emotions and it makes our lives complete.

You know for me it would be hard for me to imagine not being able to hear. Not just because of how much it would narrow down my world, but also because of how much is a part of my life. I can’t tell you the number of soundtracks I own and my library is filled will music from all different types of genera. I go back and listen to different albums, different soundtracks for different periods in my life, because music is powerful.

I’ve known the music is powerful for a long time. I grew up singing in the children’s choir. I played band in high school. I sang in the madrigals in high school. After I got out of college I even sang church choir. And those are just a few ways I’ve have helped make the music. Plus I have run sound for dance and theater productions for years. Ive seen the power of movement, acting and scenes combined to produce beautiful art. Music makes an impact in all of our lives.

What I Learned:

So what have I learned about the power of music? We all build our own sound tracks day by day and year by year. They are not composed directly for us by some one famous. They are built song by song, memory by memory, experience by experience every day of our lives, by US. I would challenge you to stop and really consider what you are listening to and why. Music has the power to build you up or tear you down. Choose wisely! Choose the music that is going to build you up when you are feeling sad. Choose the music that is going to encourage you to work harder and achieve your goals. Choose wisely because music is powerful! And build an epic soundtrack for your lives!
