Welcome to Stuff I Learned Yesterday.  I am The Real Brian also known as The Shadow… or just… Brian… I roast my own coffee and I believe that if you aren’t learning, you aren’t living.  In today’s episode of Stuff I Learned Yesterday I share a lesson I learned from getting hit by an SUV while riding my bike.

Friday Forum
I want you to be a part of the Friday Forum! Friday Forum is your opportunity to Share what YOU’VE learned, so that other listeners and I can learn from YOU. It can be a message as short as 30 seconds or several minutes long. It really doesn’t matter just as long as it’s something that will benefit others. Who am I?

Wait… who am I?  Why is this unfamiliar person talking to you on Stuff I Learned Yesterday?!?  Where’s DARRELL?!?  Well… he’s gone.  The Golden Spiral Media collective has risen up to take over the show… at least for the next 2 weeks.  🙂

I met Darrell about a year ago working for TV Talk.  We developed a great friendship over the year and, when TV Talk shut down, I had the amazing opportunity to come and help Darrell with Golden Spiral Media.  My co-host, Kevin Bachelder aka The Podcast Overlord, and I were able to bring TV Talk Arrow (all about CW’s Arrow of course) over to GSM, now known as Arrow Squad.  To add to that, I even had the honor and privilege of starting a new podcast all about The Flash, called Central City Underground, with Emilee O’Leary better known as Miss Ice.  And to top it off, I started my own podcast, called Profitcast, to help other podcasters to grow their podcasts, impact their listener communities, and profit with their podcasts.

Darrell was a huge encouragement through all of this and I’m honored to have him as a phenomenal friend.

What I Learned Yesterday:

12 days ago, I was hit by an SUV while riding my bike.  I was riding on the sidewalk with the right of way and crossed in front of him since he was stopped (it all happened really fast).  The driver didn’t look before he turned and BAM!

Almost road kill.

I don’t recommend it to you.  Seriously… it’s not worth it so don’t write it on your bucket list.

But yet – call it grace – I honestly wasn’t really upset about this.  It’s the weirdest thing because this kind of thing SHOULD upset me but it didn’t.  I mean commone – now I can say… “dude… I feel like I’ve been hit by a truck…” it’s pretty cool to say I got hit by a truck and survived!  Ok… maybe not…

The impact did leave a dent on his front right… not sure what part of me left that dent but all I can say is I AM IRON MAN!

Ok… all joking aside… the fact that I survived and wasn’t more injured was a miracle.  Even the ER Doc said I was extremely lucky.  Most bike accidents result in severe injury or death.

As he hit me, all I remember is the world spinning as I went from the sidewalk to the street.  I know I rolled a bit and eventually, I was lying in the street watching his tires drive by within an inch of my head.  Literally.  One more inch to his right and I wouldn’t be talking to you right now.  I could’ve died on Thursday.  I could’ve been significantly more injured.

But I wasn’t.

It was a flat out MIRACLE.

Here’s what I learned.

I was told that if we wake up in the morning and we’re still breathing, then we still have a purpose on this Earth.

I survived on Thursday.  I believe that, as a result, I’m still here for a reason and my purpose here isn’t done yet.

You’re still here and your purpose isn’t done yet either.

If we wake up each day and still have breath in our lungs, we still have a purpose on this Earth and people to impact!

This is freakin’ exciting!!!

But hey – I know that sometimes it’s easy to think, “who am I and what do I have to give this world?” OR “How would someone like me be a help to someone else when there are so many other people out there who could do better?” OR “But Brian you don’t understand, I’m going through a really tough time right now and I don’t understand why I’m here…” OR even “But I have a boring job and I don’t feel like I’m making a difference…” or whatever the line is…

Let me just say that I’ve been through some extremely painful times.  I’ve made mistakes.  I’ve been in horrible, dead-end jobs with the thought of “is this all there is in life?”  I’ve been beaten down.  I’ve been to a literal pit of despair.  True and utter despair.  Thinking there was no way out.  Wondering why I was still here… wondering if I could ever have a purpose and make a difference again.

Yet, every morning, I woke up… I kept breathing.

Then when things got better and I started to realize I could get behind the microphone and encourage others, I started to believe that I did, in fact, still have a purpose on this Earth.  Still had people to encourage and, hopefully even impact, regardless of where I was at.

Then coming within an inch of my life, literally, I’m reminded once again – that, not only I, but YOU have a purpose here.

Even if we’re in a tough spot in life that makes it hard to see we have a purpose here, I want to encourage you with this:

Each and every one of us has a unique experience that no one else has had as well as unique strengths, giftings, talents, you name it that no one else has.

No one else can be me.  No one else can be you.

So do NOT give up!

Make each day count.

LIVE each day!

Let’s go encourage and impact someone!
