As much as I wanted to love this episode, because Jemma Simmons is my favorite character, I was disappointed; I hate so much focus was on potential romances. I wanted to see more of Jemma as an individual not just someone’s potential girlfriend and that’s what half of this episode felt like. This was a rare chance to showcase the Simmons character and it was half about romance; I could understand part of it teasing potential romance given the ending, but I didn’t want to see half an episode on it. I know Jemma talking about her relationships is part self exploration in a centric vibe, but I wanted to see her showcasing her medical skills and wondering about consequences to her actions and more about her and the planet instead of Will and the planet.
He was a neat part so Jemma wasn’t alone and to see how she would interact with others, but I hadn’t of come in until later in the episode. I just wanted more Jemma and less romance. They have an entire season to do those plots, why couldn’t her centric episode be more about her and less about it?
Fitzsimmons definitely wouldn’t feel logical to me given Jemma’s past, as she’s said she loves him but not in that way; I also worry that if they did hook up, besides feeling out of character to Jemma, they’d miss chances to be Fitz and Simmons because it would always be them reacting as a jealous boyfriend/girlfriend or supportive boyfriend/girlfriend and for as much as I like the Fitzsimmons friendship I miss them getting to be Fitz and Simmons two individuals instead of always being seen as Fitzsimmons. I am not a Fitzsimmons romance fan.
I can’t believe Dave didn’t mention the NASA-Rosalind connection given his like for her; maybe she was involved somehow or knows Will.
I loved Elizabeth’s performance, but I was disappointed the episode wasn’t as Jemma-centric as I had hoped. Even if it had been Daisy she was raving about I still wanted to see more of Jemma the individual not just Jemma the potential love. I wanted to love this episode but I can only manage like.
Now I want to know what show Dave means.
I think it was the Fitz heavy opening and how unrealistic it felt to hear her just say his name all the time that had me feeling off about this episode; I did love the Jemma moments of hunting and cataloging and figuring out the stars, her going to the “No Fly” zone against Will’s advice because he doesn’t own her was great, but it was the constant “Fitz” in every section that took me out and had me off because again Fitz is not the only one Jemma knows. May is who you thank for any survival knowledge you have because Fitz doesn’t know those skills any more than Jemma given their training; there were other people in the video so why not mention them, Will said family when it should have been Jemma. It was just so much of Fitz in this episode even if just as a gateway to showcasing her next move that it felt heavy handed to me and I disliked that. I loved things about this episode but as it came across on first viewing it was just too much Fitz in an episode that was suppose to be about Jemma.
That was a good point by Taltos, why did Jemma wait so long to mention Will? Was she just caught up in her happiness of being home that she forgot about him? That’s believable.
Nice observation on the sand splash.
Good podcast.
Hi, Aaron! I noticed the NASA connection as I was editing and am also surprised Dave or I didn’t notice that connection. Only afterwards did I remember the conversation about NASA and DOD eating at the same table.
I don’t think there’s any danger of FitzSimmons every becoming anything more than a stronger friendship because of all they’ve been through. As much as I ship them, I don’t think I would actually enjoy the fulfillment of that desire. I just like the chase! 🙂
I still don’t think the romantic connection was overdone. It made perfect sense in a crisis situation, and I don’t think it will last beyond this one episode even if they rescue Will. I hope not anyway.
This podcast was a breathe of fresh air! This episode seems to have polarized a huge majority of fans. So, it was great to listen to a level headed review that wasn’t bashing Jemma or generally freaking out about the fate of Fitzsimmons. Those two characters have so much more to bring to the show than romance! I look forward to your coverage in the future!
Thanks, Nicole! I’m shocked to hear that some viewers bashed Jemma since this was one of my favorite episodes to talk about. I guess you heard that we still did address some of the romance controversy. For me, it was all about having such a different episode to analyze.
