Legion of Superheroes saw Brainiac-5 help Supergirl awaken, J’onn play Kara for Lena, and the Legion go toe to toe with Reign. The DEO slowed down Reign but could not stop her. Even with the beatdown she got, she was not defeated. Now she seeks to gather the other World Killers.
It Takes A Legion To Wake Kara:
Kara is in a medically induced coma after the beatdown Reign gave her. Mon-El (Chris Wood) woke up Brainiac-5 (Jesse Rath) to help her recovery. She has been moved to the Legion’s ship and put in one of their suspension tanks to aid her physical healing. Brainiac-5 is there to help with the mental healing. Kara has created a subconscious space based on her loft. Brainiac can use the interface to monitor her and help her recover at the same time he is doing things in real life.
He explains all this to Kara. But when it is time for her to leave she cannot. The door is locked and just bounces when she punches it. She uses two rounds of heat vision with no results. Brainiac says her subconscious is keeping her there for a reason. Kara thinks about how her cat Streaky taught her to be gentle and develop her human side. Brainiac says Alex wants her to know Kara Danvers is her favorite person. He has to leave to fight, but it makes Kara think. She cannot neglect her human side. She has to be both. She puts on her glasses, finds the door key, and lets herself out to the real world.
Legion Suit Up and Ring Up:
Reign is not slowing down now that Supergirl is out of the picture. She is blowing up meth labs and the police who show up once she does. We learned why the Mon and the Legion have been reluctant to fight in this time period. They were on the way to save a planet when they were thrown back in time. So they encoded the solution to save the planet in their DNA. If they die here, the other plant and others like it will fall in the future. So the DEO have to go after Reign themselves. They get all the Kryptonite they can to make grenades and chains. They stage a bank robbery to lure in Reign. Their attack works for a bit, but then she shrugs it off, breaks Alex’s leg and leaves.
When Reign goes after the prison, the Legion can stand it no more. Brainiac-5, Mon-El, and Saturn Girl suit up and grab their flight rings. They blast some Bon Jovi and call out Reign. Saturn Girl uses her telepathy to throw weights at Reign. Mon-El has a syringe of Kryptonite and goes to attack, but is encased in ice (but OK thanks to Saturn Girl’s help). Brainiac is attacking with the cannons and Martian Manhunter weakens her with a trip through the ground. But Reign is still winning. Supergirl grabs the Kryptonite and weakens herself while she attacks Reign and injects her. Reign escapes and gets to her fortress before collapsing.
She awakes later to find that the Earth based prophet of the Kryptonian gods, Thomas Coville (Chad Lowe), is there. The Dark Kryptionian says Reign needs help and Thomas can help them find the other World Killers.
It Takes A Legion To Cover for Kara:
Jimmy and Lena’s fledgling relationship is still rocky. Lena thinks Jimmy’s distraction is because her family. The truth is he is concerned about Supergirl and having to cover for Kara not being around. Jimmy says Kara is sick with the flu. Lena is going to take her some soup. Jimmy quickly calls Winn for backup. J’onn has to play Kara. J’onn offers Lena good advice and successfully pulls off a sick Kara. Lena and Jimmy are now back on good terms.
Closing Thoughts:
This episode was a little uneven for me. I know this show is about Supergirl, but the Legion of Superheroes has fought many battles and in my mind should have been better at fighting Reign. Their battle felt weak. It was good to get Kara back to embracing her human and alien sides equally. Just not sure this was the best way to do it. I am interested to see how a true fight with her as a part of the Legion will go. I’m just glad the Mon-El, Saturn Girl, Supergirl triangle is over. Now how will they cause love to blossom with Brainiac? Jesse does a good job in the acting, but I’m still not sold on the makeup though. I’m interested to see our woman power team up next week. Thanks to John for letting me be “The Substitute” this week 😛 You can find me, Geoff xforce11, over at Gotham Undercover.

I hope you feel better Karen!
I personally wasn’t crazy over Melissa’s quote as it kind of came off as it was so special they had a female showrunner now but they had Ali Adler in S1 in part who’s also a co-creator and Sarah has always been a part of things behind the scenes so it kind of felt like forgetting that. I’m all for acknowledging Jessica’s promotion but the way the quote read just sat a little wrong with me.
I am SO not a fan of Lames as they’re called mainly due to the inconsistency of James; her being a Luthor was a HUGE issue for him last season and we’ve seen nothing to say his opinion has honestly changed so it feels like a forced pairing and I don’t like that. It if kind of funny he’s dating yet another person connected to Clark in a sense; I would love to see someone call him out on wanting to be Clark or be with Clark because it does feel James is more into him than those he’s dated – Lucy (Lois’s sister), Kara (his cousin), and now Lena (his enemy’s sister).
I hope Lena reveals she knows Kara is Supergirl because Lena isn’t dumb and Kara has made too many conspicuous comments! Melissa as J’onn pretending to be Kara is ALWAYS great!
Reign has been the best part of season to me; a well done glitch moment by Odette and the special effects team to show the internal battle between Reign and Sam when Ruby says she loves her but the focus is in the article!
Lol to Vox’s “Why?! I know why but still.” part; a totally fair point. “They should have been better at this.” – ha Geoff; I agree the whole DNA thing really brought down Mon’s insistence at not fighting. I’m okay with Reign leaving as long as we can keep Sam because she’s been one of the highlights of the season…true in part due to the conflict of Reign but if she stays Sam herself could make a good anti-hero the team associates with as there aren’t enough of those characters in the superhero genre really, at least on TV.
It might not be the best handled execution but I’m more than happy to give them a pass in the name of getting our pre-Mon Kara back; I really hated her whole “Kara Danvers was a mistake” plot this season, it did not feel organic to the situation at all!
To be fair Kara never got to fully say how she feels about the DEO having Kryptonite, that was mainly Clark making a choice because Kara never said anything in S1 about it so I think she’s more realistic about them having it than Clark. I agree with J’onn it’s naive of him to think they can do without it; sure Kara doesn’t like it but she can see situations like this where you could use it and while ideally you wouldn’t want anyone to have it it’s better J’onn and Alex have access to it in moments like this than to leave them unprotected basically because no way Clark could beat Reign if Kara couldn’t. I’d like to see Kara tell Clark the DEO, at least Alex, needs access to some and them fight over it before she takes some back but as you said I’m not holding my breath we’ll see it soon.
The Danvers sisters are the best part series I’d argue!
Alex working with Collville would be interesting; that would actually bump up his involvement for me as right now I kind of feel like he’s filler.
I’m okay with no Guardian personally, he just doesn’t fit with the show; honestly at this point I’m okay with them just shipping James off if they can’t give him anything to do like say use CatCo to debate the DEO’s handling of suspects or call out Supergirl’s actions when they deserve it. As for him being treated as a love interest I have to say it’s great seeing a male character be handled this way for a bit as too often a female character will be given filler stories like this so that’s refreshing but long term if they can’t find an organic fit for James I’m okay with him going back to Metropolis for awhile.
I’m not crazy about Mon at end of this episode, it felt like he was screwing with Kara’a head; I’m all for him saying he’s happy she’s awake but it feels like he’s intentionally trying to keep her in the past emotionally and I don’t like that, he’s supposedly happily married so why this constant need to be around Kara? Yes it’s sad to them they didn’t get the ending they thought but the way he’s handling it feels borderline cruel especially knowing it’s still fresh her where he’s had years to process things. He doesn’t have to avoid her but don’t add to her emotional state by saying things like “I was worried about you”, just say you’re happy she’s back as the worry is implied.
Some blog post thoughts…
“I’m just glad the Mon-El, Saturn Girl, Supergirl triangle is over.” – hopefully it is; if they have Kara get involved it will personally basically kill the character for me because Kara is not a cheater and that’s what she would be if anything happened with Mon. Speaking of Mon/Kara though, he’s from 7 years in the future so unless Kara died in their time shouldn’t she be alive and possibly with someone else thus Mon moving on as well? I just really don’t like how he acts with her at times, I get being sad you aren’t with her but you’re married stop acting like your wife is second best – if he felt that way he shouldn’t have married her; the writers take one step forward with Mon and then two back in my opinion regarding his handling.
“Jesse does a good job in the acting, but I’m still not sold on the makeup though.” – THIS! Why can they make the triangle on his shirt but not out of the gems on his head like the cartoon version?
