Supergirl and her team are in a race against Nyxly. They must find seven totems to reassemble the All Stone. The person wielding this magical item has ultimate power. Lena has returned from Newfoundland and is eager to get back to work. After a quick synopsis from Brainy, Lena and Supergirl head to the fortress. It is there that they find the living memory of Vita, a Kryptonian witch. She shares all the facts she knows about the totems along with a dire warning. Many of her coven have gone on quests for the totems and suffered serious consequences while on the journey.
A key fact that is uncovered is that the totems have attached themselves to objects that embody the power they represent. The first totem Kara must find is the one representing courage. Consequently, a slingshot that David used to beat Goliath has just arrived at a museum in National City. Finding and possessing the slingshot is not enough. The bearer must prove their worth by running the gauntlet and showing true courage.
Nyxly and the Superfriends arrive at the museum simultaneously. In the struggle the totem is split showering those in the vicinity with fifth dimensional magic. This deluge of power comes with a feeling of undiluted courage. Not a bad thing for superheroes, right? Not necessarily because a balance of courage and fear can help keep you safe. For example, rushing towards a fire breathing dragon may not be the best decision. Letting emotions cloud your judgment could cost you precious time in a situation where quick thinking could make all the difference. On the flip side, making a guess without calculating all the variables could be equally dangerous. The people responsible for breaking the totem must face the gauntlet alone if they are to gain the power. Harnessing the power will stop the surge of irrational behavior that is plaguing National City.
Kara is taken back to the night where she revealed herself as Supergirl. She did this to save the person she loves the most on this planet, Alex. Nyxly goes back to the day she attempted to overthrow her father, the mad king of the fifth dimension. She thought her brother was on her side but at the last moment he betrayed her. That betrayal sealed her fate of banishment to the Phantom Zone.
Nyxly was victorious at her challenge while Kara was not. Supergirl sacrificed her chance to repeat her gauntlet to save her city from the violence its residents are experiencing. Nyxly has won this round and has the control of the totem of courage. However, our Paragon will not lose hope. Perhaps Dreamer will awaken with a lead on the next totem. We will have to tune in next week to find out. Until then this is your eye in the sky Green Butterfly wishing you a super week!

Some blog post comments…
“Do you like the quest for the totems story arc?”
I actually do…it’s a shame we don’t see more Nxy but I do like the idea of hunting down X before the villain finds it and sometimes you have to lose battles to win the war. This plot is one of the rare few good elements still involved with this season honestly and it’s just a shame we’re surrounded by so much subpar plots with it and out of character people. Now is this arc one of the best on the series, no as it’s pretty generic for a hero story but it’s still enjoyable which in a place where there is little to no joy I’ll take it as Justina says!
“LENA MUST ACCEPT HER NEWFOUND POWERS IN ORDER TO HELP THE SUPER FRIENDS” – yawn.
On to the podcast…
“The answer is never Bebo!” lol 100% Justina! 🙂
K Vox! ??❤️ She’s dreaming up her next review. 🙂
Well said John in regard to feelings and expressing them via feedback!
I definitely don’t get all the positive reviews for “Blindspots”.
I agree Ken a Noble writer probably could help…I assume you mean for Kara to find them because one she is not no matter what the writers try to suggest; she’s lucky she even still has a job there at this point!
Katie’s accent slips are always awesome. 🙂
Kara’s test honestly did not make sense to me because the whole thing was to go back to a moment when you didn’t have courage and it’s like why this moment? What was she suppose to do – not save the plane? That’s not going to happen, she will always fail that test because Alex is on board. Was she suppose to out herself then? She does it not long after and the totem does know outing herself would make her miserable right because she would only be her powers too people so was that it – to have the courage to give your life up in that way? I feel like there was no way for Kara to win in this moment they selected for her. I’m fine to with her losing to Nxy but I do wish the moment they picked for her to try and run her gauntlet side was more understandable from a selection point.
Even if Staz and Nicole are dating that’s not a reason to keep William around…Melissa married Chris but thankfully Mon isn’t back! Chyler is married to Nathan but you don’t hear his music used as the songs each week, even if some would work well. I feel William is there because Staz signed a season long contract and it’s the last year and no one cares about plots that work anymore – your basically trying to make the contract cost pay out a little before the end because they thought people would care about Kara and William even though all season five we said “No thank you” to that pairing.
The Tower probably has part of the actual fortress in it! Ha.
Oh my gosh, if they have William say he knows Kara is Supergirl after just talking to the Superfriends a few times…I mean it’s consistent with the poor writing theme so there’s that but yes Daryl rage against that because LENA IS TOO SMART NOT TO KNOW!!! ?
Poor Mitch. Wait…seriously? Are you seriously being serious John? They’re bring back Lex? F*CK THAT! WHY?! Ugh this is just the icing on the cake…we spend Kara’s last year on Clark’s main villain. Applause for stupidity and a middle finger to you for it as well writers. I can’t say I’m shocked, but I am surprisingly continually saddened by the news. I know I shouldn’t be surprised because they haven’t written Kara Danvers as Kara Danvers since season one honestly but still this just adds to my knowledge the end will suck and confirms the fact “Supergirl” which we cared about ended in season 3 and everything from there on has been a fill in gender swapped, tactless on political issues Superman something…I wouldn’t call it a show because there’s no real consistency in seasons 4, 5, and 6 but yeah it’s all trash now. It’s too much to hope Nxy kills him again I’m sure; he’ll probably out smart her even though she’s smart also and yeah boo to it all I say. The only joy that could come from this is Lex seeing Morgana-I mean Lena use her powers and saying the actual words to the meme going around “You’re a wizard Lena!”.
They’re superfying everyone which makes no one unique. 🙁
Lena with magic is one thing Justina but Kelly as Guardian will never make sense because of her response to it in season four and we were never shown her having enough to honestly change her mind on that stance.
“Stargirl” woo! They are a prime showing of what happens when you keep your writing staff…just imagine if we got to do that…good times.
Here’s my question – why are we having to wait to learn why Kara didn’t pass? If you’re going to show us why she failed then continue to do that here not when we’re on a differently themed totem! No good can come from this…again they’ll think it’s a clever reveal I’m sure but it will be garbage in actuality.
“Why not try therapy?” – yes Dreamweaver! I also agree with you in regards to J’onn and showing appreciation. The only thing I can say in regards to maybe why they picked J’onn was because “men no good at show feelings” because you know they don’t get the art of subtlety anymore but even still that’s not something J’onn struggled with on the past so it still doesn’t make sense but yeah I can see them using the male figure to show it’s okay to show emotions even though he’s done it in the past because they don’t care about continuity anymore or showing how everyone isn’t a stereotype. The more stereotypical you are now the better to these writers. *sigh*
$3 to skip commercials – worth it. It’s funny they showed Kara catching the plane given she can’t stop this crash in quality. I still feel sorry Nxy Leslie; I hope she gets sent to the Fifth Dimension and takes over as she should have. 🙂
#AgentArias! 🙂
Kara couldn’t have taken on the storm – one hit could kill her if powered enough as Livewire showed!
How dare you John, Nxy doesn’t have an evil agenda…she’s right in her quest for revenge; #teamNxy! 🙂
“Nxy kidnaps William” and no one cares. Ha. Alex already faced Kara being mad at her in season one what could be left to be her biggest challenge? Watch they’ll probably finally reveal to her Eve killed Jeremiah in this time and so it’s like does she kill her now in turn or not – she won’t kill her but ruin her life yes…oh wait that “Supergirl” Alex this Alex…who knows. It can’t be marriage she already rushed into that once already and came out okay in the end thanks to Sam, sure Ruby had a hand in it but still Sam made Ruby so. 😀 I just sense more writing that’s going to jack with my favorite character’s history. 🙁
I love the Katie audio addition but again…maybe best saved for next week given that’s her episode. 😉
i think they’re bringing back lex because he is way too big a loose end to leave especially in the final season.
Too big a loose end…are they going to reveal then that Eve killed Jeremiah because that’s a big loose end! If not what’s the point? Lex is a SUPERMAN big name villain but not a big loose end for SUPERGIRL; then again this isn’t “Supergirl” anymore it’s “Klark Of Steel” so for a Superman series it makes since to have Lex back in the final year.
“Supergirl”‘s final year had a villain that’s more hers in Reign so I can be at peace with that.
Yes “Supergirl” the series we loved and knew following season one in my opinion ended at the end of season three because that’s the last time we really got Kara content and it was the last time there was any subtle on issues or characters being in character (well a majority of the cast count anyways). It’s also arguably the last time Kara was front and center on her own show…and that’s a season where Sam stole every scene so it’s still half a season but more screen time than Kara got in later years. Season four was Clark Kent’s main bad guy and there was no reason to have him on as we have a bad*ss Luthor with Lillian; yes John was great in the part but send him to the Superman series to do that part not “Supergirl”. They used “Supergirl” I feel as a testing ground for their future potential Superman stuff and yeah – it’s disrespectful.
Season five was just complete hot garbage with the heavy handed attempted messaging and really the characters doing nothing in character, all the way from the top mains down to season guest character Kelly. I know she was meant to be a main by then but they rarely used her so I’m appropriately labeling her now. The bad guys were lame and that alone is a clear sign that’s not “Supergirl” because say what you will about the rest of the series the one thing we always had until then was good villains!
And now season six is just a make up of the writers I assume throwing darts at random paper scraps on a wall and doing those plots because nothing makes sense and they can do that “because Crisis”; a crisis which never mattered to us, a crisis which shouldn’t be screwed with in the LAST YEAR when it should be focused on character, and a crisis which we have no real connection to since Ruby Rose isn’t Batwoman anymore. Characters were always the heart of our series, especially the sisters, but now they’re rewritten and hardly interact because of an event that wasn’t even about us.
Had this not been the last year maybe I could see doing this post Crisis world but they knew it was our last year – there was no reason to add this one and really what has Crisis actually done for us? Nothing. Yes Kenny is alive but unless he’s going to be endgame with Kara there was no point to doing that!
They’re not homaging anything like they said would happen, they’re pulling out bits of a moment here and there and throwing in a reference line that’s unconnected to the theme of the week or they’re just rewriting and impactful previous feeling connected to that moment. There’s no care for this series anymore and it’s just SO TRAGIC to seen given you could feel the level of passion which translated to quality back in season one.
So yeah this news doesn’t surprise me but like everything else I’m going to rage against it even now because while the writers aren’t consistent I will be until the horrific end as I’ve always said exactly how I feel on episodes and news. 🙂
if they seriously don’t have the characters learn eve killed jeremiah the reveal to the audience means jack s***. the crisis has had so little impact long term on the show it’s pretty much like all the other crossovers supergirl was a part of that never got a mention on the show once she came back.
Reply in other message because of spacing. 🙂
To Daryl re: Jeremiah possible reveal…
What else could Alex’s most trying situation be? But at the same time it’s like why are we doing this now with like 5 episodes left (they only have 5 to use to show development on this because the last two are essentially the final so a total of 7 but two are already spoken for)? If it doesn’t connect to a totem and what it can do what is the point of now? And that’s like a HUGE thing for Alex…even in this jacked up Crisis reality Jeremiah is a huge button for Alex so if you’re going to push it you should let her deal with it but you know they won’t and so there’s just so much more potential for this to all go wrong rather than anything right come out of these final episodes.
And really what’s this Alex going to do – broad over it? We know what our Alex would do and that’s murder someone – be it in the open for all to see or behind the scenes like the prodigy Lyla Michael’s she is, not Amanda Waller – Alex would never go that far, and sure Kara would talk her out of it possibly before she went too far…she still may do it but there’s a chance she wouldn’t but yeah watch them continue to have her out of character and just walk away from it all because they’re friends with Eve now and she gets how Lex is manipulative. Ugh! They could all probably use some therapy for these emotions…too bad there’s not a therapist around on this series. ?
It’s the constant messed up situation we’re in with this season especially – do you want the plot done or do you want it done well? You can’t have both now, they’ve made that very clear. Do we come back to Jeremiah and have it be aweful for a lot of characters or never speak of it again and only continue to enrage the audience…you’re safe bet I would say is with continuing to tick off the audience because they’ve gone this far why stop now.
Hierarchy for bad*ss agents of DC shows as a note goes…
Amanda Waller – does whatever it takes no matter the cost.
Lyla Michaels – does whatever it takes but debates is the cost worth it and the end of the day.
Alex Danvers – does almost whatever it takes in most situations but then spends the rest of the time debating if she should have paid the cost.
STOP BEING SCARED of anti-heroe, and anti villain, characters DC!
Ugh you just know instead of doing a DEO spin off and keeping Chyler around like a smart network would because that’s instant money they going to let her go come final time. *shakes head* How much you want to bet they never mention “Supergirl” again on the series once it’s over? MAYBE they’re smart and bump Nicole somewhere (not Superman as his series has stolen enough from us thank you) but yeah I feel like once the final screen fades and news at 9 comes up that’s it for us in the Arrowverse. 🙁
So much potential wasted with this series because they wanted to write Kara like Clark to show off and get his series…a story we’ve seen in a million movies and a hundred shows. And then every other series you hear a spin-off being teased whether it comes to past or not but “Supergirl” not even a tease of one! There’s no talk of some characters going to other shows or ways they may continue the series or how they hope they can get X, Y, or Z back for the next crossover…it’s just going to be gone; it started so high and with such passion and now it’s just all gone and “Supergirl” in title screen shots only because this content wise is not “Supergirl”!
Even in its most jacked up times (season two because of Mon and the issues he brought) this series still had some of Kara around and had the potential to come back to season one quality (or at least half of it) but instead they went with Lex who means nothing to Kara, they kept pushing reporter her even though she’s horrible at it, they went heavy handed on the social issues which okay do a message but remember when you had subtlety and yeah I’ll just never understand how this got out of hand in terms of quality so fast. Like when they saw people going “Huh?” in season four did they not think maybe they needed a change in leadership; where was Caitlin Parrish? By quality I’d argue she had the best episode record for involvement; I’m not saying Jessica and Robert aren’t good writers but how do you go from being a part of the team who did “Falling” which is considered one of the top 10 series episodes to whatever this year is and then the year before for sure?
“Falling” an episode about inner emotions and dealing with those feelings and what happens when you have to face the consequences but no let’s not show that now via a therapist we have that’s CRAZY talk. *eye roll* “Falling”, an episode featuring heavily the sister dynamic…when is the last time they really had a good moment together to throw back to years past? I don’t mind Kara and Alex interacting with other people but the problem is they really just traded out because Alex is mainly with Kelly and J’onn instead of bonding with a fellow scientist (Alex is a scientist too writers and could probably help her with any magic+science item builds she wants to do – even if Alex’s focus was biological instead of technical) in Lena or…has she even really ever talked to Nia alone, I can’t think of a “yes” to that! Kara is…half the time not even really there she’s so everywhere but no where at the same time and it’s like give this woman more than a second to speak to someone. But yeah going back the sisters are the heart of the series and we haven’t seen them really have a moment this season, not the level of quality we’ve seen in the past. How do you go from “Falling” which set up character reveals (see J’onn revealing he’s Martian Manhunter to save Alex) and then in the next episode deals with the fallout to this year which is like ‘That attention to detail doesn’t matter now! We brought Kenny back from the dead thus totally changing the sister’s origin story because you wondered “what if”, you’re welcome. Oh you’re never going to see him again and if you do Kara will only speak to him for a moment before we have to cut to something else but Crisis has to matter that’s the important thing right…Oliver died for that you know.’ even though real talk Oliver never mattered to us?
Okay yes Kara cared about Oliver but “Supergirl” is not like “The Flash”, we don’t have seasons worth of interactions with these people and we are not a spin off of him like Flash and Legends so you can be sad he died but his mega plot is really nothing to us. The most it did was set up crossovers for “Batwoman” which got blown up because Ruby left and that’s not their fault in terms of that then all feel apart but still you have to deal with it and that means for season six Crisis means absolutely zero to the fans and has only served to screw more and more up to the point this series isn’t even bad “Supergirl” it’s just bad thrown together fan fiction but like fan fiction where you can tell only a small group will read this because it’s specially written for them not the fandom at large to enjoy. They said this season would homage season one and it had not done that in the least; no showing the plane catch doesn’t count because you don’t show us why that exact moment mattered. Yes they say it’s coming but that’s bad pacing because why, unless it relates to another totem theme, would you not just show the answer in the episode the theme was in?
Again there’s just no care and that breaks my heart because this series was SO good when it started and then yeah it was rough in season two for me personally but it got better in season three and there was this promise and even early season four you could argue maybe they were building to something but yeah ever since Lex’s addition for sure it’s been downhill fast I feel on the care for “Supergirl” and what else am I suppose to think when it all became about Lex for multiple seasons and his plans for things. Lex is not a “Supergirl” villain Lilian is and they could have used her and they could have done more with Sam and had her be Kara’s first real trainee…ugh it’s just so sad. Small changes and a world of difference could have been made; I know we’ll never be told the real story but yeah I’d like to know (at least I think I would – it would probably just be a confirmation of what I suspect) what exactly it was that caused us to plummet like this…what was our Kyrptonite (ironically probably Clark; give me another reason fans and or writers and I’ll stop banging this drum but until then I have to feel it was him given how much his influence took “Supergirl” into “The Lex Luthor Hour” thus making it not our series anymore)?
SUPERGIRL “The Gauntlet”
Hey, Supercrew, great job with the podcast last week, as usual. Sorry about the typos in my letter. Thanks for fixing my mistakes. Speaking of letters, sorry, Justina, the letters are my preferred form of communication, however, I can get rather long-winded and ended writing WAR AND PEACE sized tomes–on a weekly basis. The tweets are a self-imposed limit to get to the point.
Natch (or naturally, outside Chicago), that raises the question (but not beg because “Begs the question” originally refers to logical fallacy of assuming something is true in the process of arguing that it is true, but I digress), why not tweets this week? It’s late to respond to last week’s episode and I wanted to save you time from scowering twitter.
GOOD:
–Finally, Kara and Lena, together and talking, with no big secrets hanging over them.
–Life coach Jonn Jonnz. His over-positivity was hilarious to watch. David nailed it.
–Having a therapeutic breakthrough and still missing the point. (As the shrink on THE SOPRANOS pilot stated, what’s my goal, well-adjusted mobsters?)
–A couple had a fight that did NOT lead to a breakup (although I think Alex was walking on eggshells not used to a long-term relationship and how to handle post-fights. As the Supercrew, they acted like mature adults instead of impulsive, overly emotional teens.)
BAD:
–Where did Kara go wrong with her test?
–Well actually, in the Bible, David had a *sling* not a slingshot. It was a common weapon in ancient times. Also, it could’ve easily been torn in two for Nyxly and Kara to have. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhkwNg_qBd8
–Lena the witch. I’d’ve preferred if she was part alien. That would fit SUPERGIRL’s setting. Also Lena’s constant need to distinguish magic from science in light of all the alien science and tech she’s been exposed to. Then again, it’s a common Arrowverse trait that characters have verbalize even tiny disagreements instead of just letting it slide, #BecauseDrama. So, less Lena’s fault that a common trope.
WHA?
–Why’s an iguana loose in a museum? Shouldn’t it be on a leash or in a cage?
–What’s with the labcoats in the public part of museum? Shouldn’t those be behind doors in labs? Either away from the public or separated from the public so they can look but not interfere with all the sciencing going on.
–Could all this William PTSD lead to him making a mental breakthrough to remember he’s Comet the space horse? If so, this almost justify all the previous William nonsense on the show. Almost.
Last, how might Supergirl won the test of Courage?
That’s the unanswered question, although the writers might have given us a clue: Namely, how Nyxly passed: Revealing a painful truth, painful to her to admit, to a beloved sibling, who would also feel hurt by the truth–at least painful at first–but like a physical wound, instead of hiding it, and letting it fester, actually facing it openly, only then could it be properly treated and healed.
Considering Kara’s test of courage was set in the time of the series’ pilot, when she first used her “abilities” to save a plane Alex was on in National City, her revelation could have been she used her abilities previously in Midvale with only her best friend, Kenny, knowing about it (and a couple of strangers passing through for a few days). After saving that plane, she knows helping people is something she needs to do, and while she’d like Alex’s blessing, she will do so without it.
— Ken from Chicago
P.S. Bonus: If Kara was talking to Alex *and* her mom, Eliza.
I do appreciate the comment from Justina about thinking about the totems in the terms of the Horcruxes from Harry Potter, and Kara & Nxyly now having a psychic connection, given how the show likes to reference the series. I do like me some Harry Potter, too. That may help me the enjoy the poorly written plots a little more.
But I do like them having things to search for and go up against Nxyly each episode with – and not winning every battle. I always liked when on Legends the Waverider crew is searching for something that gives the opportunity for great character interactions between the heroes and the villains, such as when the Legends were searching for totems of their own in Season 3, and the pieces of the Spear of Destiny in Season 2. Gives a bit more purpose throughout the season that can then reach a crescendo when all said pieces are found and how that plays out.
Is it conducive for a final season that should be super focused on characters arcs and a. celebration of the show that came before it? Not really. This season has not once given off series finale and wrap-up vibes. But it’s what we’re getting and I have to roll with it. I think Arrow did it wonderfully while still telling the current story, but it’s a bit unfair to compare. Supergirl deserved better is all I’ll say.
Since Supergirl seems to want to tackle every social issue imaginable, I do not understand why they can’t give a focus to mental health!! I would love to watch an episode where the Super Friends go to therapy! If that was the entire episode, I would be ecstatic!
That’s all I’ll add for now. Happy feedbacking!
Too bad there’s no therapist on this series because I agree that could open a lot of cool character exploration stuff.
I feel they would lightly focus on some characters though, especially if it’s the creatives now versus season one…like Alex would not be an in depth dive because they’re scared to call her what she is – an antihero. If you had season one writers then we’d get in deep how violence plays a big part in her life because she’s trying to arguably hurt the world given she feels hurt by it at stages or it’s a way to force control when she felt like previously growing up she had none. With the writers we have now it would be maybe a little on how the sister ship defines her because she seemingly has no personal life beyond Kara but would mainly be about her quest for a family; if you had writers who cared that would then go into social issues which show how hard it is for single people to adopt and Alex being single and in a dangerous field is more likely to get no-ed than others. You could also do the “some adoption agency is anti queer” plot and tackle how stupid that is but they’re on flashy headline topics not all the social topics. This is not a plot I would want to see for more than an episode or two because again the idea that someone can’t be a good parent because of orientation is stupid but it would flow and give them a social issue to tackle…it’s a far middle ground I feel.
Lena would also take a back seat because unless they’re talking about Lex they don’t know what to do with her anymore. I mean a discussion on identity of self in a family with a large name and how Lena isn’t them but is still a part of that world and how did that effect her and how she goes about problem solutions is right there but you that doesn’t involve enough talk about Lex probably for them so again it has to be out. Also I’m pretty sure Lena already has a therapist so she’s good. Ha.
J’onn hasn’t really had a lot connecting him to the plots anymore so it’s like what do you discuss with him. He’s mainly been dad since the start; you arguably could have him talk about how he’s always been a minority his whole life as a green Martian to a point and then as deciding to be a black man and how he’s actually found strength in being different to say differences are okay but that’s probably too deep for this crew. You could ask him about life beyond the sisters given he’s been so wrapped up in them for the majority of their lives thus setting up series end situations for him…that feels like an easy enough concept for these “take the easy route now” creators.
Brainy is literally out of time and should be worried every day is what he doing part of the plan to get back to the life he loved or is he actually changing things but nope – he’s just living now!
Nia has her mother’s death on her and you could easily bring back up Maeve and those effects but I feel sadly they’d mainly have her deflect a lot with humor and we’d never really get answers with her.
Who is Kara beyond her cousin and her sister given Kara has put so much stock into these relationships – one warranted (Alex) and one not (Clark)? What are HER hopes for her future post fighting? Is she going to do this forever or will she be able to sit the cape down one day and just be Kara Danvers…who is Kara Danvers to Kara? This is like the Batman question and which Bruce sees – is he Batman (aka what he can do) or is he Bruce (who he is)? Spoiler alert: Bruce sees Batman as the real him. True Kara has said she remembers Kara in the past but again what they show us a lot of times is her following the ideals of someone else because as we’ve said multiple times Kara in season one does not match the Kara we see now sadly.
Kelly could have been that shrink too and just been a good friend to the group who maybe goes on to a relationship with Alex, yes it’s a conflict of interest if she was officially her doctor but you just say she’s an inspector for some group determining their mental health so the option is there if they wanted to have them together. It’s way better than making her James’s sister we never heard of until the last minute! Also being a shrink is kind of what she was brought in as not whatever they want her to be this week.
*Sigh* “Supergirl” is a series of wasted potential and yes she definitely deserved better!
