Nia Nal was born and raised in Parthas. On Parthas humans and aliens live together in peace. She had a happy childhood and loved her hometown but always envisioned herself doing more. She attended college in Washington DC where she wrote speeches for Cat Grant. Nia was going to change people’s minds with her words. Ms. Grant sent her to Catco to be mentored by Kara.
Nia came to National City at a turbulent time. The Children of Liberty were trying to get aliens out of their town. She is no stranger to the difficulties of being different. She was assigned male at birth but knew with her whole heart and soul that she was meant to be a girl. The universe thought so too. She was bestowed the power to see the future through her dreams. A gift given only to one daughter per generation on Naltor, the planet her mother is from.
Nia tragically loses her mother to a spider bite after failing to read the warning signs in her dreams. She has a lot of frustration around losing her mother before learning to harness the full potential of her powers. She is still in the beginning of learning all the abilities bestowed on a Dreamer. Hopefully soon we will see her reach out to her sister. Maeve studied her whole life to become the next Dreamer. Perhaps teaching Nia will help repair the rift in their relationship.
This is such a super journey we are on with Nia Nal. Every few episodes we can watch her powers grow and evolve as she becomes more skilled. I have loved watching Kara mentor her and Brainy calm her doubts. When Supergirl leaves us at the end of the season, I hope Dreamer can continue on another show in our universe. I don’t want her story to end after only 2 years of making this world a better, more tolerant place. She is a great Superhero and an asset to any team. Making the world better with both words and deeds. She is the transgendered Superhero this community has been dreaming of.

Written by Tom King dated June 15, 2021
Kara Zor-El has seen some epic adventures over the years, but finds her life without meaning or purpose. Here she is, a young woman who saw her planet destroyed and was sent to Earth to protect a baby cousin who ended up not needing her. What was it all for? Wherever she goes, people only see her through the lens of Superman’s fame. Just when Supergirl thinks she’s had enough, everything changes. An alien girl seeks her out for a vicious mission. Her world has been destroyed, and the bad guys responsible are still out there. She wants revenge, and if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it herself, whatever the cost. Now a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head out into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core. $4.99 on Comixology!

Some blog post comments…
“Ms. Grant sent her to Catco to be mentored by Kara.” – clearly because she knew she had super powers as it couldn’t be for reporting – Nia would be the mentor then. Ha!
“Every few episodes we can watch her powers grow and evolve as she becomes more skilled.” – this is arguably progressing to slow at times, but it’s still better than most plots of the week we get – especially now. Nia is a highlight for this series right now even at her slowest! 🙂
“I have loved watching Kara mentor her and Brainy calm her doubts.” – when did you see Kara mentor Nia? She’s never trained her in stuff; I’d argue Brainy has been more over her development than anyone. Kara is actually a pretty crap teacher when it comes to timing, ha; she was suppose to watch Clark but got pulled off in the Phantom Zone, she was going to do Mon but Winn was more into him, and Brainy is doing Nia. She could have trained Sam but as we know she sadly left before season four. 🙁
I think Nia goes anywhere it will be as we say to Legends because it’s a good fit for her. 🙂
“We’ve been threatening it for months and now the time has come! It’s time for the OTP throwdown!! ” – “threatening” lol; I have my dissertation ready to send!
Some great photo choices for this blog post week.
On to the podcast…
“I will be watching the series until the bitter end.” – same Leslie; that’s how good the actors were to make their characters feel real, Chyler especially…where’s her spin off CW?!
I want to give Azie the benefit of the doubt but yeah I can see it as her episode being a Kelly centric piece since it’s what she mainly knows. 😐 If Guardian gets a spin off and Alex doesn’t…the CW is dead to me; that is such a horrible thing to put out there Leslie, don’t say that again! Guardian is a crap thing if your last name is Olsen especially so to know there’s more of it to come is not exciting.
Have to be and will be are two different things John.
I agree John, you can say you don’t like Kelly because you can see her being Alex’s love interest a mile away and maybe your Alex OTP is someone else or you don’t think Kelly needs to be on the show at all because it’s more time away from characters we want to see to introduce someone new but Azie is not Kelly and she should be attached just because she’s trying to do a job. You can tell her you don’t like Kelly because you ship Alex/Maggie or you think Guardian is dumb but be nice to her as you don’t know her. If you have a personal issue with her that would be one thing but you shouldn’t hate on an actor our if the gate; hate the character not the player as the saying kind of goes. 😉 I feel for Azie…and honestly Kelly now also as they’ve done her dirty so far I feel by not letting her be the shrink she’s really meant to be; we could have such great stuff with her!
Nicole is very charismatic. 🙂
LOL John, you’re so funny – Nia was mentoring Kara not the other way around on the reporter side. Maybe that’s why Cat sent her secretly, she saw Kara failing at reporting and so she’s sending Nia to help her while Kara helps her learn to super because Cat again knows who heroes are after a few months. Yeah that’s totally it! 😀
I’m all for going back to Maeve, but given we only have 13 episodes left I would rather that plot at this point be saved for Nia post series. What if they go flip with Maeve and she’s the bad guy who uses the dream knowledge against Nia? You’d have the sister dynamic which is a key element of our series but it wouldn’t be as loving so it’s not a direct rip off of the original series. Alternatively, Maeve could be a good guy but still their dynamic is more tense than Kara’s with Alex because maybe Maeve feels the same way even post Crisis; it would give the network a chance to discuss transgendered issues in the frame of helping Maeve understand how Nia is a real woman too and so for as hard as it might be to watch I would actually say some animosity between them could be good for a longer run series.
I’ll say it again, Nicole is funny. 🙂 Love the audio clip John, thanks for pulling it!
There’s variants to the Pride issue? What?! I like the default cover for to, but the Harley/Ivy cover could have been cool.
I see Daryl and raise him, “When are we going to do the Alex episode?!”. 😉 There should be a Lena episode though also for real because Katie has definitely pulled her weight and then some on the series so if nothing else can we talk about just Katie for a bit? 🙂
I’d love to see more of Alex in comic book form!
“I know this is something you get all jazzed up about” “I see what you did there” – NO, don’t encourage him Justina…it will only lead to more dad jokes; just smile at John and say nothing! Ha.
I agree Leslie re: Nia or Brainy; I enjoy Nia the most. I’m also definitely over the whole confidence thing; I’m fine with Nia not knowing everything and having to learn some elements as she levels up power wise but she shouldn’t still be doubting every choice two seasons in and she should know a little more at least on the powers she uses the most so they definitely need to rebalance that moving forward.
Wait Leslie came in at season four only? I’m surprised, I thought she’s always been here! I clearly have past blindness. ;p
Why is the poll not available in the blog post this week? To answer the question though, I would like to see Nia’s story continue via…I’m going to go A) comics actually because one they can do more big screen adventures because they’re not limited by budget like a show would be, two maybe Nicole could then co-author some stuff to keep it all consistent, and three it’s all about Nia so there’s no need to worry about split screen time. I’d of course love to see more of Nicole actually on screen as the character but I think the best way to go could be her own comic run with Nicole making appearances still on other series at times; again she’d be good on Legends (this giving me a reason to watch the show for more than an episode where they might mention Nyssa or it’s Charlie/Zari based) but they’re SO packed with characters I don’t think she’d get the time her plots need to really develop so I say comics. Alternatively she could play back up to Alex on Alex’s spin off…I’m just saying CW you can at the least tease that to us even if you do nothing! The way they’ve been treating us though I don’t know if any character will make it past the final in terms of continuing stories but we’ll see; Nia is a good bet to do it if anyone could.
We all know Daryl is voting for Lena for the OTP right? It’s mainly so he can talk about Lena more I feel and that’s fair. 🙂
“I can’t wait to see how many people come and bring it for William!” – John is fired now.
as far as kara’s otp goes i love supercorp in fanfiction but i don’t ever think the cw would make both alexa and kara be a member of the lgbtqia community. we were lucky they made alex gay and i think that’s about all they’ll give us. i’m just hoping kara doesn’t leave them all behind to go to the future
“I’m just hoping Kara doesn’t leave them all behind to go to the future.” – PREACH Daryl!!!
For me, this would be the most lazy exit to the show because Kara has a history of talking about leaving but she never does because of one thing – Alex. If Alex is still around (you kill Alex and we will fight CW 😡) then Kara isn’t going to leave so it makes no sense for her to go to the future. I know some Mon fans will say he’s there but I don’t support that ship so no!
It would be the “just because we want to” ending if she goes off to the future when the world still needs her now.
I would rather they kill off Kara and people complain it’s a copy of Oliver because then we’d have weight back to the series and it makes much more sense; besides they’ve all but physically killed this series anyways so it would be sadly a more fitting ending for her than going to the future. Ugh I hate the idea of her running off and leaving people behind; yes again Kara talks about doing it at times but she never actually does it so it doesn’t make sense to the character. I wouldn’t put it past them to do, especially as I don’t want to see it, but I hope they don’t.
As for SuperCorp, yeah they were never going to make Kara an LGBT+ member…ally absolutely but not a member or even partial member where we see maybe she wonders what if with a female character; even if they did consider going there though I have to say I think Lena deserves better than some of the ways Kara has acted to her so I’m not sure I would ship them even if there was a realistic chance they could be together. Friends works but beyond that I’d be mixed.
When Kara found out Argo was still there she definitely left them and didn’t seem like she was coming back until the witches showed up. That whole going away party at Catco was just to keep Lena in the dark. They rarely care about introducing her coworkers to us. They have done it of course like when we meet Franklin or Mackenzie but that big party was all to keep Lena in the dark.
