Midvale is the small town where Kara Zor El became Kara Danvers. A place where she found a new purpose. Alex Danvers’ life was easier before Kara crashed into it. She had two loving parents and not so much responsibility. Now her mother expects her to be a good Earth ambassador and make sure her sister is safe and happy. Maybe that part would not be such a hardship if she hadn’t lost her father to achieve that goal. Alex has never had a sister before but she promises to get better at it.
The first time we visit Midvale two broken hearted women are returning to their childhood home for some comfort. It is there that we learn that the death of Kenny Li in high school really brought Alex and Kara closer together. It was the first time they worked together to make the world a better place. It was a story told through a flashback so no harm was done to the timeline.
In season six we get another Midvale based story. However this one involves time travel in a post crisis world. In order to save Kara from the Phantom Zone they need a sample of her blood. Nia and Brainy head to 2009 to save their Maid of Steel. It is a reality where Kenny Li has survived. Yes that also means the sisters don’t form that initial bond as a consequence of his murder. However, the Green Butterfly is not concerned. In any timeline, through any twist of fate, these two sisters will find their common ground. They are destined to make the world a better place. Kara is the Paragon of Hope but she does not stand alone. Right beside her stands Sentinel, always watching and protecting as a good big sister does.

Supergirl (2005-2011) Volume 1: The Girl of Steel
Written by Justin Gray, Joe Kelly, Jeph Loeb, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Greg Rucka dated February 2, 2016 This now-classic run by Jeph Loeb features the first chapter of Kara Zor-El’s triumphant return! When Superman’s Kryptonian parents rocketed their infant son to Earth, his aunt and uncle did the same with their young daughter, Kara Zor-El. The two cousins were meant to arrive on Earth together, but instead Kara arrived just a few months ago, after spending decades in space in suspended animation. Now taking the name Supergirl, Kara possesses strength and speed that rivals (or even surpasses) her cousin Superman’s. As she searches for her role in this new world, she’ll cross paths (and trades blows) with the JSA, the Teen Titans and the Outsiders. But while she’s facing off against other heroes, Superman’s nemesis Lex Luthor has uncovered a truth that could change the Girl of Steel forever! $10.11 on Comixology!

Some blog post comments…
“In order to save Kara from the Phantom Zone they need a sample of her blood. Nia and Brainy head to 2009 to save their Maid of Steel.” – because her hairbrush got magically sucked into the Phantom Zone too I guess!
“It is a reality where Kenny Li has survived.” – I wouldn’t hate this so much if they didn’t make it Kenny’s death which brought the girls together originally – putting so much on that fact and then changing it creates a huge hole of what brought them together instead and because we won’t see that on screen you have to ask why did they do it? Especially if Kenny doesn’t become her OTP because really what was the point then?! It just felt unnecessary to change as much as we said we wish he could have lived; they easily could have had it be an Alex and Kara heavy past instead but they brought in Kenny – why beyond it’s the easy way to show Crisis effected us too. Crisis never mattered to our series so the fact it’s changing something as big as what made the sisters the sisters we love and know now is annoying to say the least!
“Right beside her stands Sentinel” – who is this? I’m sorry I don’t recognize any Alex that’s not in DEO polo gear…that’s a lie of course but still ugh the suit is SO unnecessary for her character. 🙁
“Would you watch a Midvale series?” – this is a hard one because which Midvale are we getting? S3? 100% I’m watching that! S6? I lean towards not being as excited for that; I would definitely want Olivia and Isabella if we can get them but it wouldn’t be a make or break deal for me if they recast providing the new actresses could also embody the characters like the originals did. Even if we got S3 would it be with this writing team because I lean towards no on them also for fear they mess things up even more. I’ll take the “maybe” option of watching but with the same actresses. I would love some way to work Chyler and Melissa in still too. 🙂
“Next time on Maid Of Steel!” – aw yeah we’re getting into solo character exploration it seems! 🙂 Will my Alex feedback be a book or not that is the question. 😉 Definitely look forward to the debate on Nia as she’s definitely been season MVP so far I feel (it’s only her over Lena so easily Daryl because she’s had more screen time, Lena is holding it down for sure per usual don’t worry ha 🙂 )!
On to the podcast…
McDuff Silver Vox hahaha. 🙂
S3E6 – good; S6E5&6 – trash – analysis complete! That was easy. Now what do we do with the other 2 hours 7 minutes and 30 seconds of this download? ;p
Lol at John saying we’ll get through the final 13 because I use to think that would feel sad to think about now I laugh because it’s like a pro talk to power through the garbage they’re labeling as the final season of “Supergirl” knowing since season three at best and messing with history in a final year…yeah it’s laughable now which is ironically sad in its own way so…full circle.
“Why can’t you have a bit of both?” – you can’t have both John because Kelly told James that Guardian was never a solution he should have looked for and it more so hurt him than helped so the fact she’s now suiting up and using the title is not accurate to the character. If Kelly hadn’t trashed Guardian so much with James then maybe I could see this move but she told him it was dumb so it’s dumb for us to believe she now suddenly feels different; and she wasn’t light in her hate for it either so it’s not like she just changed her mind, they’re having to rewrite her character to make this work and that’s not okay. So no we can’t have even a little of both because even a little pro Guardian is not the Kelly Olsen we were introduced to…I’m for character growth but that’s a rewrite more than growth, in my opinion anyways.
I agree John, I don’t think the Arrowverse has past its time, I think poor writing has always been past it’s time and so yeah just because your source material is full of bright colors and people punching one another doesn’t mean you can do a series on that – coasting does not a good season make after all so I feel people are just tired of that more than anything and plots that make no sense. A twist isn’t something fans enjoy when it comes out of left field for a character regarding their logic and it’s not fun to watch when it’s poorly handled so I think they need to do better with writing and try their best to maintain the care they start some of these series with; stop dropping one series just because you get another (see “Supergirl” and Superman), stop playing to action just because the source material features it as it’s the characters we fall for not their martial arts abilities or other skill sets, and stop doing dumb plots we’ve seen a million times just for drama – organic drama is thing look into it (see how no one cared about the “battle for Lena’s soul” because no one in the fandom every felt she was really evil or had evil leanings).
“We’re committed to this series! We’re committed to the characters and the cast and crew. I just wish the same level of commitment was shown with the writing.” – PREACH brother John! Seriously season five alone was like “Can you phone it in any harder this season writers?” and now season six it’s like “Who even are you? What show do you think you’re working on? Crisis does not give you license to f*ck up my established beloved lore especially in the final season!”. Were they given the very bare cliff notes on characters and this is their first time professional writing because again CW I know some fan fiction writers right now who you can pay less money but will be SO much more worth it than this group because they clearly don’t know who they’re writing with some of the choices being made and no it’s not funny with the supposedly smartest character is made to be dumb in multiple episodes especially on the scale they made Brainy in the rebooted Midvale episodes this year, that’s annoying. I’ve said it before but I will say it again it feels like the passion for the series is gone and they’re out to burn it all down as much as they can before the final credits so no one even remembers Kara and company since they got their beloved Superman now. Something by the way they never would have gotten in “Supergirl” season one wasn’t SO good!
COVID didn’t effect season five and it was pretty crap too John so I feel the COVID point only goes so far; COVID limits the cast who can be in the room not the words that come out of their mouths or the history they portray.
“Is this an homage? I don’t see it.” – second this Leslie! “The disrespect for “Supergirl” and its fans continues.” – second sadly. I know you don’t subscribe to the idea John and Justina but I will always say Superman had a negative effect on our series and the moment they got the rights to him they stopped caring about Kara as no way we get season five much less season six as it is if they still care about her and even you have to admit I would think the timing of us being cancelled while he’s picked up for two seasons without the pilot even being aired at that point doesn’t look good at all. So yeah the fact they cut Kara out of a photo doesn’t shock me sadly but it does still make me sad that she’s treated as a stand in for him basically and has for all if not most of her CW run.
Oh “Crisis On Earth-X” you will always be the most well done crossover!
Sorry for your loss John!
Time to fight you Justina – Crisis might have been big but let’s be honest it only ever mattered to two shows and that was “Flash” and “Arrow” so why does it HAVE to effect us in our FINAL year? Because they want it to? I want shrink Kelly only but that isn’t happening. Much like Superman wants to cut out Kara because of time we don’t have the time to factor in Crisis so no they didn’t have to do it; unless their endgame for Kara romantically is Kenny then when…seriously why? There’s NO point in it other than that and is that a good enough reason to muck with history? I’d argue no. Kara can love still so it’s not like she was only ever happy with Kenny; it would be one thing if Kenny was Kara’s brother and he died and Alex was just a friend and so you’re asking what does that relationship look like with the beloved brother back and how does he alone effect Kara but it’s not so why go there? If you’re going that big why not do a what if she stayed on Krypton during the explosion for some reason and what is her life like ok Argo City because she made it there with her mother – who is pure Krytonian Kara plot, true we kind of saw this with some season three stuff but still. We didn’t have to do Crisis, it’s not like Crisis is a mandatory effector in each week’s episode so why beyond they wanted to? And I’ll be real, Infinite Crisis sucked – you could see it as the Oliver PR move it was and it its just horrible to enjoy for me, there’s literally nothing good about it that I can remember so the fact we have to deal with it in our final season because they don’t want to admit it’s crap is just annoying to me. It’s like them refusing to let Guardian die by saddling Kelly with it even though she previously hated it and fans definitely hate it…what is the goal beyond making fans just never want to think of the series again? Spoiler alert writers – we will always remember season one so you can’t take Kara from us as much as you are trying to do; Superman will never be my replacement for her! 😡 So yeah, sorry Justina but we will fight on this – there was no reason to do Crisis in this last year and certainly no reason to change Kenny’s involvement unless you’re going to make him the OTP because if you don’t that’s wasted material and really even if you do it’s still arguably not the best reason to do it so yeah – nothing good comes from this choice.
“Can’t forget about the William factor!” – 😐 you know where the door is sir. Ha!
The casting of young Alex and Kara is great!
You can have seniors and sophomores in the same classes in high school depending on the classes so them in the same class doesn’t surprise me; also you can say it’s because Kara is that smart – either way works. 🙂
No Mon/Kara…you’re making a decent case for Crisis now Justina, way to fight back ha. That said I can’t unsee what I saw so I know what they tried to suggest and eh just no. Ha.
You know the annoying part is going to be they’ll just at best have Kenny at the end and so they can say Crisis mattered but really everyone will act the same so the trip back is just to bring back Kenny because Crisis needs to effect shows even if it never mattered to them before or post even like it did others and so we won’t see big changes like you would expect and they’ll say it’s because they didn’t have time but no it’s really just because you clearly don’t want to work here anymore or you know it’s the end so you aren’t going to put in the effort to do the changes justice and yeah it’ll be a hallow little thing which in the grand scheme means nothing beyond blowing up more lore and for what? Ugh, thinking about this show now can just be so depressing at times. For a series with the lead character being all about hope they sure have sucked the hope for quality out of the fandom it feels, certainly this fan. ☹️
What actually brought Kara and Alex together now if not Kenny? A murder is a pretty big deal and Alex almost dying is a big deal…are we really suppose to believe that Alex seeing Kara bleed once after a Super event is alone what made them who they are? Did she stay in Alternatevale for awhile longer and they maybe bonded over that because Alex seemed pretty anti Kara still or at least not to where one thing would change her mind at least not with it being huge and I feel the meteor arguably isn’t huge and if you say she stayed longer did that effect her and it’s just so much they’re setting up that needs effects too and you know we won’t see it and it’s just UGH! Why…in the last season why? A love interest is not enough of a reason; I will explain more on this in my OTP debate when that episode comes. So yeah this feels like doing it to seem cool but in reality it messes with more than it ever grants if that makes sense?
*crosses fingers Jor is fake!!!*
I guess in some alternate weird way you could argue if Jor is alive then it’s still true, Kara as we know her lost her world (s1-3 and unfortunately 4 & 5) in a life changing event (Crisis) and now she’s stuck on a new planet (season six) and so it’s an homage as well to her origins but that would be such a crap way…sadly now I can see them trying to use this as the logic and *facepalm* again this show just makes me sad to think about now. *groan* It’s like when we said we wanted to see more Kenny…we didn’t mean you had to bring him back to life writers, flashbacks are still a thing! Such easy changes but no they want to burn the series down at every turn it seems; I tragically wouldn’t be surprised at this point if in the final 13 they talked to the Superman writers and something happens in his final that effects our series because they treat her like a female him so they’d use our show to continue his story because why not just top off the hatchet job they’re attempting with the series by pulling that move.
“Kelly doesn’t need a shield to be super!” – this! I can grant you want the actors to have fun Justina but isn’t there some other middle ground way? Like can’t Kelly dress up as Guardian for a Halloween and it just proves her point to her about how this is not an okay thing when someone is attacked and she’s like “Ugh, no. See you for therapy afterwards!”? Kelly went on such a rant to James about how Guardian was part of a problem and never a solution so the fact she’s now suitting up in that same gear…it just doesn’t sit well with me. Same with Alex; I love Chyler is having fun but Alex does NOT need a suit to be super! Could the VR episode not been a middle ground? She gets a suit for a moment but beyond that time we get asked we know and love. I just want continuity for the characters and neither Alex nor Kelly feel in character to what we’ve seen so far with suits. Maybe it’s part of Crisis too their attitude changes but all the more reason to hate Infinite Earths in my opinion.
I’ve never seen “Smallville” either John so you aren’t alone. 🙂
“There’s all these Superman shows…” and only one Supergirl and they’re trying to burn it down and make people want to forget all about it it seems because of how they’re treating it. 🙁 This series and Kara definitely deserve better! Again you wouldn’t have you’re precious Superman series CW if not for Kara doing good first. 😡
If you shoot some with green kryptonite it makes black veins on someone, at least that’s what Batwoman 2.0 suggested Justina.
Caitlin Parrish being over the final 13 and the writing team from season one back is about the only way I think to get a happy Team Huntress again for new episodes. Ha. They could have Caitlin over the Alex spin off they seem to avoid doing for some reason, that could be positive, but yeah on the whole I think the positivity is gone for me with the series give how they’re treating it. 🙁 I will always LOVE season one and probably watch seasons 1-3 (fast forwarding over Mon of course) again but as Leslie said earlier the rest I can’t think of with good memories and that’s a shame because a lot of their issues were so easily fixable with just care especially in the last two years.
Lol to the lunchroom end part! 🙂 It’s a completely fair question though!
It makes sense to make the MVP the one with more screen time. Lena’s lack of screen time mostly comes from the show’s insistence they keep her isolated from the larger group unfortunately. I think given the network’s heavy emphasis on relationships means that they still would have made Kara and mon-el happen.
I agree with Green Butterfly lets separate Chloe from the actress who played her. I shipped Chlollie (Chloe & Olliver) on the show and some of my BSG actors got mixed up in the cult as well. Allison was a victim who turned into an abuser and that is hard. The HBO Max series “The Vow” was eye opening to the events and personalities involved with the NXIVM cult. I recommend it.
