The Gentle Art of Making Enemies was anything but gentle.  Jerome is in full Joker mode.  He has kidnapped Bruce and wants to make his death a center ring event.  Meanwhile Ed’s game with Penguin has come to an end and Ed can no longer be Oswald’s friend. We even get a visit from the Court of Owls.  What a WILD episode!

The Gentle Art of Making Enemies:

GU59 - The Gentle Art - Bruce

Gotham is in chaos and the GCPD cannot keep up.  Harvey and Jim want to cut off the head by capturing Jerome.  Reports have him and his crew all over town.  With the whole town a dumpster fire who knows what Jerome’s plan is.  Jim remembers Jerome had Lee hostage and goes to ask her for insight.  Lee has learned the, no so, gentle are of making an enemy of Jim.  But she remembers Jerome talked about Bruce.  Jim asks her to warn Wayne Manor.

Bruce and Alfred are trying to bring some light to Wayne Manor now that the lights are out. They get a call, but it is too late Jerome and his pack of Jokers are already in the building. Bruce is fast on his feet and calls to Jerome’s desire for an audience.  Jerome takes Bruce to the circus.  Alfred is left to be killed.  But Alfred used his skills and Jim aids in taking out the henchmen.  Back at the GCPD Harvey, Jim and Alfred figure out Jerome is at the circus.

The circus is a depraved one with wack a human, piranha dunk tanks and so much more. Bruce has become a painted clown and Jerome is ready to give Gotham a show.  Bruce asks Jerome what the plan is.  Joker I mean Jerome says people don’t want a plan they want to be set free to do what that want.  Bruce says there are still good people in Gotham.  Mentally we see Bruce start to make a stand and decision.

Jerome is going to fire a cannon packed with a huge cannon ball, knives and nails at Bruce.  Jim, Alfred and Harvey interrupt the party along with the GCPD.  Bruce uses his lock picking skills to get out of the cuffs.  He leads Jerome into the hall of mirrors.  There he confronts Jerome and calls him out.  Alfred’s training has played off he surprises and tacks down Jerome.  Jerome is begging for Bruce to let out his anger and wrath.  But Bruce stops short of killing Jerome.  Bruce reunites with Alfred and Jim hits the face off Jerome’s face.  It is brutal!

Back at Wayne Manor Alfred patches up Bruce.  He says they have been training, they don’t know what is next.  But that means Bruce needs rules.  Bruce says their is a line between justice and murder and he won’t cross that line.  Bruce’s 1st rule is no murder.  Bruce is making his own rules and moral stand.  He is seeing the need for justice and protection in Gotham.  He is not Batman but he has taken huge strides on the road to Batman. He has also made a major enemy in Jerome.

The Gentle Art of Losing Friends:

GU59 - The Gentle Art - Ed Oswald

Oswald is searching for and finds Ed.  But Ed has the Penguin right where he wants them, strapped to Isabella’s car under a barrel of acid.  A cop rescues Oswald.  But his home is no safer.  Butch and Tabs are there looking to take out Ed now that Oswald is ruined.  They drag him back to the Sirens Club for Babs to question.  Babs wants Ed’s location.  Oswald realizes that Ed was right he doesn’t know what love is and has never sacrificed.  Ed is learning the gentle art of love but has lost his friend in the process. So he won’t give up Ed to the crew.  Ed walks out up-happy.  He wanted Oswald to die convinced he couldn’t love anyone.  Ed takes Oswald out to the docks (man that is NOT a good location for Penguin).  Oswald argues that he created Ed and is the only one who can see his potential, but it is not enough.  Isabella was a bridge to far.  Ed shoots Oswald and pushes him into the bay.

I get how this move forces Ed to become The Riddler.  He has changed so much he can’t go back.  If he can’t go back go full out with style.  But Penguin shot and in the bay (again), haven’t we seen this before. It seems like it has been done before, but we will see.

The Gentle Art of Starting A War:

GU59 - The Gentle Art - Owls

Court of Owls seems to include a Gordon.  Jim’s uncle Frank Gordon (James Remar) is conversing with the head Owl lady Kathryn.  He is advocating for Jim to be included in the Owls plan for Gotham. It seems like Kathryn does not believe Jim can help.  But she allows Frank to go and make an offer to Jim.  But her plan is to use 5 a.k.a. clone Bruce to move the Court’s plans forward.  Neither option seems good for our heroes.

We are still asking questions about JIm’s dad.  Did he turn down an offer from the Court and that is why he was killed?  Did he work for the Court and was rubbed out by the competition?  Is he still alive but in hiding?

Closing Thoughts:

This episode of Gotham proves the writers, cast and crew know how to rock an episode before a big break. Last week in the podcast we talked about Cameron making the Joker his own.  We talked about he took aspects from all of the actors before and the comics and molded his own character. This episode confirms those thoughts and we mention that in interviews Cameron say he takes the most influence from Mark Hamill’s Joker.  Cameron’s performance was great this week and while the character may be locked up in Arkham, expect to see him back!  I loved even in the midst of this we got teases about how the Court of Owls are planning to rule Gotham.  Overall a great episode of Gotham!
