Beware Jealousy is abounding in Gotham! Beware The Green-Eyed Monster was all about jealousy leading to violence. Mario uses his jealousy to make Lee push Jim away. Oswald’s jealousy over Ed, lead to Ed revolting against him. The green-eye monster is on the prowl and our Gothamites may be torn to shreds.
Hey Jealousy:
“Tomorrow we can drive around this town
And let the cops chase us around
The past is gone but something might be found
To take its place…hey jealousy” – Hey Jealousy – Gin Blossoms
The green-eyed monster may have Mario because of Alice’s blood, but Mario Falcone (James Carpinello) is still a crafty man. He kills a doctor to get his badge and discovers a way to mask the detection of the virus. Jim shows up following the trail of clues. Mario knocks him out but sends him to Arkham.
The Mad Hatter, complete with new newspaper hat, is tricked by Jim’s rhymes into revealing that He infected Mario. Jim has Mario tested and of course he is negative. Harvey has been trying to talk sense into Jim all episode, but it is not working. Jim tries to talk to Lee but Mario is a step a head. They talk about jealousy and Jim says let’s ask Lee who she loves. But Mario has Zsasz hold Jim until it is almost time for the wedding.
Jim and Lee have a powerful talk, but it is too little too late. Jim admits his love and why he held back. Lee slaps him and calls for Papa Falcone. While Jim gets a beat down, Lee and Mario wed. Mario has succeeded by having Lee push Jim away. They slip out of the reception early and head to his father’s getaway cabin.
Lucius Fox has found Mario’s loophole in the test. Harvey sends Alvarez to follow Mario and then calls Jim. Lucius and Jim search Mario’s and find the masking drug. Harvey gets the bad news that Mario & Lee slipped away. So Jim goes to the Don to ask for a favor. I’m the only one who can stop your son from killing Lee and going over the edge.
Mario asks Lee about the conversation with Jim and then asks if she still loves him. She says a part of her will always love Jim. Jealousy has stoked the virus and the monster has emerged. He has a knife in hand ready to kill Lee, when Jim arrives. He kills Mario and Lee is shocked, not seeing the knife that fell into the lake below.
Attachment Leads to Jealousy, The Shadow of Greed That Is:
“Fear is the path to the dark side…fear leads to anger…anger leads to hate…hate leads to suffering.” Yoda – The Phantom Menace
Barbara approaches Ed and lays out the pieces of the riddle. She lets Ed figure out that Oswald had Isabella killed out jealousy. The Penguin is greedy for all of Ed’s time and affection. Ed is disbelieving but devises a test.
Ed proposes a closer relationship with Oswald. Oswald takes that to mean love and admits his feelings. Ed acts in shock. He fantasizes about killing Oswald, but knows it is not enough.
Ed comes to The Sirens nightclub to have a chat with Barbara. Butch and Tabitha are there. Her hand is re-attached but not useable yet. Butch promises a slow death for Ed. When Ed arrives, Barbara holds them back. Ed says he wants to not kill Oswald, but to destroy him and tear him down. Barbara promises their help on two conditions. The first is that she be made head of Gotham’s underworld with Ed’s help. The second is that Ed apologizes to Tabitha and Butch. He promises and apologizes and an uneasy alliance has risen. But who will suffer more from Ed’s hate Oswald or Ed himself once he has fully gone over to the dark side.
A Mother’s Jealousy Protects:
“My mother was my first jealous lover …” – Barbara Grizzuti Harriosn
Bruce and Alfred get the news of the Talon killing Volk and Dimitri, but the gang is still on to help. Bruce realizes that they must strike now knowing the risk. They case the location of the safe and discuss the plans. But someone is watching in the shadows, is it love or jealousy that drew them?
Bruce trains in walking the tightrope. Selina has had it she is leaving when confronted by Alfred. He lays it out that Bruce knows the risks. Alfred is charged with raising him to be the man he should be not to protect him. He calls her out, saying Bruce made the deal with the Court of Owls to protect her.
The Talon has killed off the rest of the Whisper Gang and there is no way Bruce could make the tightrope walk. But Selina comes to save the day. They make their way in and to the safe, when the Talon attacks. Bruce and Selina can escape but don’t, so they can help Alfred fight the Talon. All looks lost when the shadowy watcher comes in to lend a hand. She reveals herself and it is Selina’s mother, Maria (Ivana Milicevic). They make a hasty escape and we are left wondering if mommy dearest will allow Bruce in or if her jealousy for time lost with Selina will prevail.
Closing Thoughts:
I loved this episode for many reasons. The writers have paid out on the setup with the virus, Mario & Jim, and so much more. Jim has come a long way over the season and is OK for Lee to be happy without him. But the promise that he made Mario, hurt her and I’ll kill you, has to come back to haunt him going forward. Mario is dead due to the virus taking over, but will Lee ever fully trust Jim even when she finds out? Will she ever trust herself again? Ed has made a temporary alliance, but it will never last. Barbara is smart and crazy at the same time, but Ed is so much smarter. When his mind and heart have cleared, he will toss Barbara, Tabitha and Butch out. But they are a scrappy group and will do just fine on their own. Bruce got a kiss for luck from Selina, but his heart is still caught up in puppy love. Selina doesn’t know how to deal with his love, so how will she deal with the love of a mother who left her? Will the kitty run away to safety?
While not as tight an arch as last year, it has been a solid first half. I look forward to the stories we had continuing. I also look forward to the rest of the Mad City we have yet to glimpse!

News:
Gotham’s Schedule in the new year: Gotham will return for 3 Monday’s in January (16, 23, 30) confirmed to us by @GothamTVWriters, on Twitter Monday night. Gotham will then move over for 24: Legacy, which runs until the end of April. Gotham will return on April 24 and presumably end on June 12.
The Proto-Joker Returns: Yes, Jerome (Cameron Monaghan) will be back in Gotham in 2017. Is he another Professor Strange experiment? Is he a Court of Owls experiment outside of Strange? We will have to wait and see. Gotham producer, Ken Woodruff, told TV Guide that Jerome wouldn’t be back until Season 4. In the rest of season 3, the themes and mythos of the Joker will be explored. Does this promo signal a change to that statement? Or does it help to reinforce the Cult of the Joker in Gotham? Only the new year will tell. Until then keep your eyes on our Facebook Group and we will keep you up to date!
