Executioner Barnes is on a mission to clean up Gotham and if he has to bend to law to do so he will! Jim is offered the chance to join the executioner or be put away. Meanwhile Ed is after Isabella’s executioner. The Bat, Cat, & Ivy are on the run after Ivy’s theft of a jewel.
Executioner:
Captain Barnes (Michael Chiklis) has gone over the edge. He is rounding up criminals that the law can’t put away and hanging them. He has become Gotham’s executioner of justice. Meanwhile Jim is following up on Dr. Symon’s statement that it was Barnes that pushed him out of the building. Jim questions and follows the clues. Harvey does not want to believe him. Jim finds disturbing files on Barnes desk before Barnes catches him.
Barnes says he has a lead on Symon’s killer and wants Jim and Jim alone to go with him. Jim quickly fills Harvey in to the location. But Barnes is a crafty executioner, he told Jim the wrong address. The man, Sugar, they find there does work for the mob but, has nothing to do with Symon’s death. Barnes executions him anyway. Jim manages to escape and fills Harvey in. Alice blood has infected Barnes and Jim is in real danger. Harvey and Lee convince the GCPD of this and they go to rescue Jim.
They arrive just in time to give Jim the upper hand. He shoots the would be executioner in the shoulder. Barnes is locked up until they can treat him. He is on the other side of the bars at Arkham. The Executioner may behind bars but he is not cured!
Hunting for The Executioner:
Ed is anxiously waiting to hear from Isabella (Chelsea Spack), when he gets a call from the GCPD. He identifies her body in the morgue. Oswald says the police think she fell asleep and blew through the gates into the path of the train. Ed goes into a funk and is mourning Isabella by listening to Vivaldi (Sposa son disprezzata and it has some interesting lyrics). Oswald is ready for him to move on (and back to him). But his efforts only get Ed moving to say goodbye.
Ed lays flowers on the tracks and says goodbye with this statement:
The time I knew you feels like a dream.
And now I’m awake.
I wish I’d gone on sleeping.
I will never forget you, my love.
Good-bye, Isabella.
Then his Riddler side kicks in. The tracks four blocks from her house and not far enough away for her to fall asleep. A blind man says he heard her screaming for help. Later, Ed looks over the car and finds the break lines cut. The GCPD overlooked it or it was covered up. Ed knows it was murder and is on the hunt for Isabella’s executioner. He comes to Ed to talk and says Isabella’s killer was…. Butch! Oswald is all to happy to have the blame off of him and ready to help Ed end Butch. But whoah to Oswald when Ed finally learns the truth!
Executioner Has Them On The Run:
Ivy (Maggie Geha) has been overlooked her whole life. She has gotten nothing for free and had to steal to get by. But her new body has advantages. She can get stuff from men and not even have to steal. She gets an antiques dealer back to his house. Always fond of plants, Ivy has started to use them to help her out. She has made a perfume that let’s her control people, but it is not up to Poison Ivy standards yet. She gets him to open the vault but, it quickly wears off and she has to hit him over the head and knock him out. She steals a HUGE emerald necklace and leaves.
Ivy comes to Selina’s crash pad and finally spills the beans before she eats all of Selina’s. Selina calls Bruce and they start to question Ivy but, masked men with crossbows are on Ivy’s trail. They escape and Bruce offers to buy the necklace and return it to the owner. Ivy is clueless on the price and Selina won’t help. But she is not clueless in love. She sees that Bruce & Selina are a couple. Bruce, Ivy & Selina try to return the necklace, but the owner is dead. The masked men were after the necklace. It seems it has a key inside.
When the masked men, including the executioner in charge, search Selina’s place they discover a hidden box. It contains some of Selina’s belongings with a news clipping showing Bruce. Bruce and the gang are back at Wayne Manor where Bruce will provide a place for them to stay. But how long will they be safe there?
Closing Thoughts:
This was not my favorite ep of the season, but it was so much fun to watch Michael Chiklis dig into the executioner character. He has played Barnes as a by the book character and a reserved one. It was great to seek Chicklis be free and wild with Barnes this ep. Barnes has always been a black and white character. But Alice’s blood pushed him over the line. I hope that this change will not make him a heel forever. Hopefully a cure can be found. I think it would be interesting to see him come back a changed man. It would be great to see him more of the captain that the GCPD an Gotham needs. Ed on the other hand is being pushed closer to being the Riddler and that is great! I’m just sorry that Penguin killed Isabella. I was on the Edabella ship and am sorry to see Chelsea Spack go. She did a great job!
