Trading places or Transference what ever you call it, the theme of it people’s lives being flipped and changed. We had inmates set free and heroes imprisoned. We had rulers become ruled. Gotham was crazy this week and a fitting end to the season.
Trading Places Heroes Edition:
Our heroes from the firm of Wayne, Gordon, and Fox find themselves trading places with those they have sought to put away. Ed is playing 20 er 2 questions with Bruce and Lucius complete with timers, music, and consequences for wrong answers. They correctly (for Hugo’s reasoning) answer both questions but still get get gassed for answering wrong.
Jim is still strapped into the chair and Hugo plays a more clinical version of truth and consequences. Hugo drugs Jim with truth telling drugs. But Jim is riddled with guilt. So Hugo again plays god and absolves him of it. Now freed from his guilt Jim is free to answer that he knows nothing of who really runs Indian Hill and nothing of the Court of Owls.
Our 3 heroes are reunited and informed that they will be blown to bits along with Indian Hill. Selina now has sway with the guards thanks to Firefly. She doesn’t need Bruce to rescue her and she has HIM wrapped around her finger. So his apology and help is brusquely turned away.
I don’t think any of our heroes enjoy playing trading places. To quote Mr. Fox “Wow that was unpleasant, how are things going for you? we’ve had a hell of a time!”
Trading Places Inmate Edition:
- Clayface
- Fish and Penguin
- Clone Bruce?
Clayface has played trading places with Jim and hitches a ride to the GCPD. He does NOT have Jim Gordon down to a T to say the least. Harvey questions him and knows things are off but not to the degree needed. I struggled with this plot line the most. But Harvey is under a lot of pressure as acting captain and things are crazy. Alfred knows things are wrong but does not know Jim as well. It takes Stabby Babbs to see through the clay. She knows it’s not Jim when he is ready to jump back on the Barbara bus and leave Lee. She smacks him and the enemy is revealed. Bullock sends the entire force to Arkham and Indian Hill.
Fish tried several attempts to get play trading places with Ms. Peabody and failed. The Court of the Owls is satisfied with their identity still being secret and order Hugo & the Indian Hill inmates move upstate. So Peabody comes to drug Fish. Fish does her whammy on Peabody and later escapes driving a bus full of the worst of the worst Indian Hill inmates. The GCPD can’t slow her down but Penguin and Butch, with his chain gun, stop the bus. She whammy’s a shocked Penguin and leaves while Butch and the boys are gawking.
We only caught blurred images of the Indian Hill inmates getting on the bus. A homeless lady lets them out of the wrecked bus but because of her bad glasses they are all blurry save 2. Killer Croc and boy that looks and sounds like Bruce. Who is he? A clone, a long lost twin I just don’t know but we will have to speculate until the fall.
Trading Places Villains Edition:
- Hugo
- Peabody
- Ed
Hugo is fine with our crew of heroes not knowing abut the Owls and happy to give that report to them. All is going well with the evacuation until Selina causes a rift and we have an epic fire and ice showdown between Mr. Freeze and Firefly. (I must say that scene was visually striking and fun to watch.) Hugo wants out and gets caught in the crossfire. He is slapped awake by Jim but he’s trading places with his patients taking on fear and loss of control. He runs away after spilling the beans about the bomb, radioactive materials and the monsters in the basement. He ends up in police custody as vast change from his start this season.
Ms. Peabody falls under the fishy spell of Ms Mooney. She is doing Fish’s bidding even trying to stop Hugo from arming the bomb. But she gets knocked out. Her gasps for water help Jim and Fox knock out the bomb and then she finally gets her drink of water. She too has played trading places and lost.
Ed went from inmate to Riddler and got to question Fox & Wayne. He tries to weasel his way in with Hugo. He get’s called a shaman by Hugo. But when tires to join Hugo’s staff he gets slammed back into his cell.
Closing Thoughts:
I (Geoff) have mixed feelings about the episode. I was not too impressed after the first watch. But after the second watch I respected it more. I feel that there should have been more build up on the Court of Owls to enforce how scary they were to Hugo. As I said I had issues with people not recognizing that that was not Jim. But I’m hopeful to see what is next. This season has showed a vast improvement over the previous one. As we talked about in the last podcast, I’m hopeful that the writers will take the lesions from this year and write Fish better next season. The acting has been great this season. The writing has been, for the most part, consistent and strong. The visuals, set design, costumes and cinematography have been wonderful. I hope it all continues next season.
