“Mr. Freeze” was a very moving and emotional start after the hiatus.  We learn very quickly that Victor Fries will do ANYTHING for his wife. The press has labeled him Mr. Freeze and Jim and Harvey are hot on his trail. Can Gotham survive the Wrath of the Villains?

Victor and Nora

Even though our introduction to Victor & Nora Fries is brief, the actors play them so well and take the writers’ dialogue and make it real. Nathan Darrow (House of Cards) & Kristen Hager (The Expanse & Being Human where she also played a Nora) take the characters and live in them.  We see Victor come home to Nora and he is discussing his work with her.  We see the mixture of hope and frustration he has as he shares with her.  He can freeze and stop the disease’s progress, but he is unable to thaw back out.  He is so shaken and she lovingly pulls him back and comforts him.  Their kiss is a precious look into the marriage.  Later she is having an attack and he comes in to find her coughing up blood.  She is out of one of her meds and he runs to the pharmacy to refill it.  But the very brusk pharmacist refuses.  Victor throws the bottle at him and leaves vowing to return.   Later he sees Nora being taken away by the police and decides to turn himself in.  But after seeing one of his experiments work he leaves the GCPD to pursue it to fix his wife. He is a loving an passionate husband.

Enter Mr. Freeze

Mr. FreezeThat love and passion have not set him ablaze but given him an icy resolve.  Mr. Freeze is born out of the coldness needed to experiment on others to save his wife.  He has to put a wall of ice between he and others to do what needs to be done.  Gordon & Bullock learn from Lucius Fox that Wayne Tech. was doing work in Victor’s area but Thomas Wayne shut it down mysteriously.  We are left to wonder if this is what drove Victor to become Mr. Freeze.  Did Thomas see the start of the Indian Hill project and shut everything down including Victor’s hope for his wife?  We don’t know, but Mr. Freeze has taken to the streets to look for subjects to experiment on.  He is cold and will not let anyone get in his way.  His cold spree in the pharmacy gave Gordon & Bullock the tip they needed to tie Victor to Mr. Freeze.  They head to the Fries home.  But He was not in the house.

Bullock and GordonGordon & Bullock question Nora.  She had heard Victor come in with one victim and found his lab and the frozen people while he was out.  She is horrified and sitting in the house when Gordon & Bullock storm in.  When questioned, she comes clean that she was surprised at the coldness of Victor and his methods.  But she strongly states that he did it all for her and she will not give him up.  He may be Mr. Freeze to them but he is still her husband.

Penguin Arkham

Departing from the Mr. Freeze storyline, we turn to some of the other villains we know and a new one.  The Penguin is on the run from the GCPD hiding out with the homeless.  With Galavan “dead” and Penguin out of the picture Butch has claimed the title of King of Gotham.  He has upgraded to a drill hand and is leading the underworld.  Tabitha the Tigress is on the prowl.  She convinces Butch they should be partners and sparks start to fly.  Cat sees it all from her hiding place in the vents. Ed is still working at the GCPD and playing of his connection to the Penguin.  But he is testy and it will not take him much to be pushed over the edge.  The Penguin is brought in and both Jim & Ed are sweating.  Jim has lied about his roll in Galavan’s death and Penguin could ruin it all.  But the Penguin backs his play and Jim is off the hook.  Barnes is suspicious but lets Jim slide.  Ed promises to visit Oswald’s mother’s grave and bring her flowers.  The Penguin is shipped off to Arkham and his King of Gotham speech gets not respect from the other inmates to taunt him and all claim to be king.

Dr. Hugo Strange Will See You Now

Hugo StraingeEntering the picture is Arkham psychologist Hugo Strange, played by the skilled B.D. Wong.  Soft spoken, sharply dressed and calm in demeanor towards the inmates he looks like he poses no threat.  He invites Oswald in for tea and a discussion to get to Oswald’s issues.  Hugo may be wearing rose colored glasses but his is in no way unaware of Oswald’s nature.  He promises to rehabilitate Oswald by any means and we see that is bad news from one of Oswald’s fellow inmates.  Hugo takes a secret elevator from the old and dank Arkham to the spotless and bright Indian Hill facility.  Where he and Ms. Peabody discuss several inmates including Firefly.  Hugo is ecstatic when Ms. Peabody shares the news about Mr. Freeze and his technology.

Well after a several month break it is great to be back discussing Gotham with our fellow Undercover Agents.  Karen and I are excited to be back behind the mics and excited to share your reports on the action in Gotham.  I sure missed the beautiful cinematography, sets, and acting that Gotham has had this season.  I was apprehensive to see if the writing would continue to be as good as the first half.  I was not disappointed!  I truly hope that the return of Fish, sometime this season, will not ruin the great momentum this season has gotten.  But I will stay positive because the acting is so good so far.  So until next week, don’t let Mr. Freeze give you the cold shoulder or you might not survive the Wrath of the Villains!
