Despite the fact that we knew much of the content of the premiere episode of Extant based on the promotional material, there were still plenty of surprises in Re-Entry. The identity of the “man in the shadows” in particular got my eyebrows to pop up. Pilots are a tricky business: how do you balance all the exposition with an engaging, action-packed narrative? Luckily, the series premiere had just the right amount of both as well as many discussable mysteries that are perfect for a podcast.
Molly’s mysterious pregnancy tale is masterfully told in a series of flashbacks to Seraphim Station, where she encounters a phantom of her ex-lover and fellow astronaut, Marcus, just as a solar flare passes by. Of particular interest is Molly’s subsequent cover-up: how can she keep such a thing secret?
John and Ethan provide the most compelling storyline this week with the moral conundrum surrounding the Humanichs project, for which John has no contingency plan in case things go all Skynet on him. Ethan clearly has something going on that gives us a creepy vibe, but is it evil, or just a different way of experiencing childhood? And of course, we have to wonder what’s the deal with Director Sparks and Yasumoto. Not even a clue is given as to their motives or why Yasumoto is in a golden coffin.
All of these story arcs provide plenty of fodder for our discussion this week! Don’t forget to send in your feedback each Thursday after the episode airs! It’s our goal to get our podcast out to you as quickly as possible each week.
