I have to say I was not a fan of this week’s episode; to be fair part of the disconnect may have been from weather issues breaking up the viewing but even just based on what I saw this was a miss for me enjoyment wise as I felt it was super predictable in elements, I HATED with a passion everything they did with Siren (she could have been such a good villain or anti villain at least but no they have to try and make her Laurel 1.0 because “reasons”…bad guys/anti villains can be in spin offs too writers), I didn’t see how John was affected by it all which left it feeling incomplete in regards to the set up last week – yes he said he got it but was he really ok with everything or is that just what image him said, and while I got saying goodbye to Paul given the final season thing we did that last time with Quentin and his forcing Laurel’s identity onto Siren so I’m left asking was there not someone else who could have showed Oliver he can’t fight his fate?
There was ONE good thing to this episode I have to give it credit for because it was awesome each time it happened and that thing is Lyla Michaels! Seriously she was amazing this episode and even though I could guess when she’d pop up or what she might do, like shooting Quentin in the hideout, it was still such good content I wanted more with her. I hope she’s got a lot of screen time in the crossover because *chef kiss* she is perfection; her stuff this episode also made me think of last week when we talked anti heroes because if ever there was an example of how they can do anti heroes right it’s her! Again there are other characters I can think of who could be anti heroes/anti villains if the writers of each show would just commit but the example of how they can get it right is Lyla. She was the highest high for me and saved the episode from being a complete waste of time.
On to the podcast…
I still can’t get excited about the crossover this year beyond Huntress being in it.
Lyla is the only real anti hero currently in the Arrowverse; there’s still people who could be antis, heroes or villains, but for some reason the series don’t go all in with them in that progression. I can kind of get it with “Supergirl” because if you mess with the Danvers sisters’ dynamic too much you’re screwing with the heart of your show so they have to be careful taking Alex too far even if cannon wise she’s Lyla Jr. almost, but Legends should be embracing their characters because you can easily do Sara as an anti hero as she basically has been one since her introduction and Mick is clearly an anti-villain and thus is known from their histories so why they back off of it I don’t know. Black Siren is so an anti hero but they’ve saddled her with being a hero only because…no one knows; yeah ok they’re trying to make up for killing Laurel in season four but as we’ve said they can never do that and sadly in the process they’ve now tainted two characters names Laurel. The only group embracing complex characters right now outside of thankfully keeping Lyla canon is the “Batwoman” team; they may screw up and label someone a hero when they clearly aren’t later on but for now they’re doing pretty good having no labels for characters and not forcing them to fit a plot.
Ugh they did Siren so dirty in this episode. ? I will never believe she cares that much about this Lance as he’s not her dad. He did even respect her wishes as a person, he tried to make her his dead daughter so why should she be into saying goodbye to him?! I hate them redeeming her like they did.
Black Siren is not Quentin’s daughter! He’s another they’ve tainted to me with poor plot choices so while Paul did good acting in this episode I hated seeing Quentin’s face because all I can think about seeing him now is how he forced Siren to be someone she’s not because it’s what he wanted and I am not ok with that. It’s a bummer they’ve taken out so many characters recently with poor plots. Quentin would have been awesome in this episode too had they not destroyed him last year in my opinion; that’s probably another reason I didn’t like this episode, they put too much focus on characters I no longer care about and plots I don’t buy. I rolled my eyes so much during Siren’s goodbye with Lance and any time they acted like she’s Laurel 1.
I’m with Flash, I wouldn’t call Lyla a villain; not a clear one of course. If Oliver can forgive Renee then he should forgive Lyla for any wrongs he think she’s done to him!
I wish Siren was a villain Cammie. ?
I still don’t understand the logic of the scheduling for the crossover this year.
