[sc:astop]Martin “The Flash” and Cammien Ray visit other Earths – or, Elseworlds, if you will – this week as we discuss the Arrow leg of the crossover journey. In this week’s podcast, we dive into the Freaky Friday situation that brings our teams together, with a focus on the Arrow episode and Arrow characters.
This season Arrow will be airing on Mondays at 8pm ET. Our podcast episodes will be posted the following Wednesday, so we can accept email/voice feedback through Tuesday afternoon – and maybe an early Tuesday evening submission might make it in if you’re quick. 🙂
You can leave feedback here.
For me this was the best hour of the crossover because of Batwoman; if it wasn’t for her this would have been so so like the entire crossover. It wasn’t a bad event but it wasn’t “Crisis On Earth X” either! I’d even argue she, and Kara, saved the whole event because really there wasn’t anything that got me personally excited from any of the parts; yes there was some fun moments in the parts but again on the whole it was watchable but nothing to write home about as they say.
Oh Flash, be Barry from Earth 1 instead because 90s Flash was pointless when you see the whole thing put together; he made for a good teaser but like Caitlin V Nora Freis was ultimately a bust.
Yes involve Cammie because 1) she should get her say too and 2) I need some good Barry dragging from someone else because seriously what the crap Barry; he’s good in doses but he screws up so much so often I want to put him on his own Earth more than not and just let everyone else interact regularly while he guest stars at times.
Oliver, and in turn Barry, giving Barry, Oliver, a hard time was good and I especially loved the “No I didn’t, the Flash did!” moment when Barry asked if Oliver stole the drive from the cops but I can’t say Oliver really stood out to me. I fully agree you can tell Stephen was having fun at points and Oliver per usual did have a big part but for me none of his parts made this year.
My biggest disappointment was for all the hype they put into Batwoman she was only in really one episode and at makes her total crossover time is like 10 minutes I think so that was a let down. I’m also bummed she’s not on Earth 38 with Kara; I’m hoping for the actual show itself they have “Batwoman” set on Earth 38 and we don’t do a merge next season just to have more Kara-Kate, also Alex involved because Alex is awesome, moments because I DON’T WANT Barry screwing up National City yearly like he does everything else!
One fan brought up a great point in a review for the crossover I saw, the way they really could have maximized the fear gas fight is if they had John Barrowman be Reverse Flash and then Tom be Malcolm because Barry and Oliver switched so why shouldn’t they? That would have been amazing detail and I agree would have made it better but I’m just glad they finally used the fear toxin on one of the shows because it’s beyond time! I thought as a whole the Easter eggs at Arkham were well done! I feel they missed the opportunity for one more though, had they had a board with the doctors’ names on it and one been Dr. Quinzeel (Harley Quinn) that would have been the icing on the cake.
I LOVE they edited the “Arrow” opening to feature Grant in Stephane’s spots, that was a very awesome touch!
Of course Kara loves Kate Kane – she’s basically Alex! Ha.
Flash, come on now you watch “Arrow” you can’t be surprised by a gratuitous explosion; “Arrow” is the king of unnecessary explosions. 🙂
Another favorite moment was definitely Barry going “Once Oliver cheated on his girlfriend with her sister!” because that should never be forgotten as to why Laurel and Oliver don’t work in part, he constantly cheated on her. Sadly it looks like he’s moved on to lying with Felicity which just ugh really dude, still? Speaking of Felicity, I really liked her scene with Caitlin when she asks “What is love without respect? Without trust?”; I’d love to see them having more moments together if possible! I also liked Killer Frost’s moment with alt Alex in part 3 even if it did feel like she was randomly there because they maybe had Danielle on set that day; this is where James should have been if they wanted to include him in the event and move Killer Frost to evil Cisco’s scene because she is a MUCH more believable bouncer than James I assure you!, for me that switch would have worked more and made part 3 slightly better as a whole! I say whole because there was always going to be too much Superman in that hour for me to really get excited by it.
The wig is canonical Flash so they have to have it for Kate; I actually liked her suit, I thought it was a good day one debut compared to others. Nothing is going to top Kara’s suit, it just looks amazing but as far as starting suits go for everyone else I thought Kate’s looked good. They may enhance it for “Batwoman” but it was a good first draft.
“Did you like the premise of the crossover?” – yes on paper I thought it sounded like a fun idea but in actuality not really because it was mainly about Oliver and Barry with Kara assisting their fix instead of her being mixed up with someone else for some reason, they could have body swapped she and Caitlin to keep the switch connected due to powers or she and Alex could have even switched because something was affecting the group versus someone changing reality. It was again ok but as a whole didn’t work for me personally; I’d rank it like the 3rd or 4th best crossover if you include all the mini ones too like the Legends set up between “Flash” and “Arrow” and the “World’s Finest” with Barry and Kara and so forth – it’s not the worse but it’s not the best either for me. I don’t have high hopes for “Crisis On Infinite Earths”!
Oliver and Barry roasting each other was one of the best things about this whole event! Ha. 🙂
At least you got an “Arrow”ish hour with Gotham given all the show has done to build it up Cammie, my poor “Supergirl” hour was mainly about Superman and what wasn’t was an ensemble piece for the crossover. We got like a minute of the Danvers sisters and J’onn and Brainy for literally a hot second so if anyone didn’t have DNA of their show I’d argue it was “Supergirl”‘s hour. Maybe if we’d been on Earth 38 instead of Kara coming to Earth 1 it would have felt more like her hour but as is Melissa, and Chyler and David and Jesse, was a guest in the crossover more than feeling like a key part necessarily; yes she once again really helped to save the team but more often than not she felt like an audience member watching instead of someone really getting active as her action moments were kind of stolen by Clark and Oliver and Barry. She did have that amazing bullet catch and she did babysit the boys in Gotham so they didn’t die but beyond that she didn’t feel as a part of this event as she did last crossover, she was there but not a focus if that makes sense…this mainly felt like the Oliver, Barry, Clark crossover.
I definitely enjoyed Oliver and Barry having to come to appreciate each other’s control of their powers and talking about how they tap into it. I am not into Barry going dark because for a moment he was Oliver; I know Oliver is broody but not enough to depress Barry for an entire half season I feel. Also the Flash suit did not look good on Stephen, I don’t know if that’s due to material or weird padding but it looked bad!
“I don’t know why it had to be in the crossover.” – because Oliver is a massive liar and got caught again. He should have given Felicity an apology last week I agree but I didn’t mind it in this episode.
“Did you have a favorite crossover character?” – probably Kate because I wanted more of her, but actual mains I’d say Kara because she was logical and FINALLY felt like the real reporter when she was talking to Kate the “Supergirl” writers try and say she is there; I don’t know what these writers did different beyond showing her as actually component but I enjoyed her out of all the mains this year. For actual favorite though I have to go non human and say the roasting of Oliver and Barry by Oliver and Barry because as Flash said they were giving each other crap that comes from actual audience issues with them and that was a very fun meta moment!
In terms of Gotham I won’t lie part of me wanted to see Maggie step out of one of those cop cars even though I knew it wasn’t going to happen; it won’t be Floriana most likely now given Batwoman is on Earth 1 (still boo over that) so we won’t get that fun Alex-Maggie-Kate meeting but I still hope they have a Maggie Sawyer when “Batwoman” gets picked up. At the least they have to have a Renee Montoya! I’m very much team Siren keeping Oliver in jail for a night; I love how logical Kara would have handled the situation but sadly logic is wasted on the boys.
Lol that’s generous Cammie calling Caitlin and Nora’s moment a fight, Killer Frost went down the second she came in sadly. I get it was Nora in Arkham so Stephen’s wife could play her and because they can’t use Victor right now but it took me out of the moment also because why is Nora in the asylum? Nora is why Victor is Mr. Freeze and thus she should have been frozen at that time.
Personally I would have enjoyed Superman more in the crossover I think had I not been turned off to him already because of how he effects “Supergirl”; I think Tyler does a good job, Henry Cavill is still my favorite current Superman although tops is still Dean Cain, but I think Superman has been one of the worst things to happen to “Supergirl”, the worst will always be Mon, because even since his introduction there they have made Kara at times essentially a female him and Kara is not her cousin. Yes they are similar but Kara was never as naive about kryptonite being used at times as she was post Clark on the show, this forced reporting career was never in anyone’s mind as realistic job for her until Clark made it easy to have another nod to Superman on the show with that move and honestly sadly sometimes I feel like they’re doing Superman with Supergirl instead of embracing how she’s different and what made her unique to the point people got excited in S1. I don’t mind how she’s reminiscent of him at times because again they are similar but she’s not him also and that needs to be remembered; they don’t have the same relationships with Luthors, Kara isn’t as naive about things as Clark can be at times arguably, she doesn’t have the same interests exactly as him – she’s her own person so for me there’s too much Superman in “Supergirl” for me to get excited seeing him looking like Tyler in anything currently. No disrespect to Tyler the actor as he does a good job but I don’t enjoy how Clark effects Kara most of the time.
Deegan Superman was my favorite version of Superman on “Supergirl”!
My favorite name on the doors was Isley, P aka Poison Ivy!
I wish the Deathstroke we saw here was our season villain instead of Diaz!
A “Freaky Friday” crossover only with none of the book stuff would have been better I think. I get they did it to set up “Crisis On Infinite Earths” next year but again it was funny yes and watchable yes but it’s no “Crisis On Earth X”. Again I’m not excited by COIE because I don’t want Barry messing with “Supergirl”; he can bring over Batwoman so “Batwoman” can be on Earth 38 but then please go home Barry as again you mess up too much to get me excited about a merger with you.
Diggle puking each time with any Flash is great!
Malcolm better be dead as it’s the only consequences he’s ever faced so I am ALL for him not coming back in real time! Flashbacks ok, visions ok, alternate realities ok but reality no!
I agree Scarlet Vixen lying to Felicity, especially now, is just dumb! Iris definitely didn’t notice Oliver was Barry in part 1!
I definitely warn “Arrow” fans about wanting Bruce around because yes it’s cool but given Batman is bigger than Green Arrow in terms of popularity he will definitely steal some thunder and be a focus when on versus it being equal so you may want to say you want him in one episode with equal screen time to Oliver or something because yeah it’s not fun. You are 1000% percent correct Flash in that I personally will flip a table and rage if Superman ever fully takes over “Supergirl” and by that I do mean what I perceive as a takeover it doesn’t have to be a full on clear takeover. “Supergirl” is about Kara not Clark; if there is a second character it’s about it’s Alex!
I’ll miss you in the mega podcast even Cammie!
Happy holidays everyone!
