On April 6, 7, and 8, over 60,000 sci-fi, anime, gaming, and comic fans descended on the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center in downtown Dallas for Fan Expo Dallas. We were among them. For us, the biggest draw for this convention were the three stars from Stranger Things, Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas), and Sadie Sink (Max). Addi had prepared to cosplay as Eleven from Stranger Things season 1, and I would be cosplaying as season 1 Dustin.
In this episode of the podcast, we discuss our experience getting a photo-op with the Stranger Things cast, share our favorite moments from the Stranger Things panel, and talk about some surprisingly fun moments from a panel with Back to the Future’s Tom Wilson (Biff Tannen) and Christopher Lloyd (Doc Brown).
We also take a look at Fan Expo Dallas while asking the question: Is Fan Expo Dallas a con worth traveling to? Addi and Darrell agree that the answer is YES! The lineup of celebrities as this con was top notch. Besides the trio from Stranger Things, they included: Ben Affleck, Jason Momoa, Jeff Goldblum, Val Kilmer, Cary Elwes, Wallace Shawn, Tom Wilson, Christopher Lloyd, Eliza Taylor, Amy Acker, Morena Backarin, Anthony Daniels, Ben McKenzie, Billy Dee Williams, Felicia Day, Joonas Suotamo, and many more!
We also found the staff and organization of the event to be excellent. Lines were managed well, the staff was friendly and well-informed, the venue was easy to navigate, and picking up badges was simple. With plenty of food options, easy access to nearby hotels, and ample parking, there were no real downsides to the con. If we had to point to any disappointments, it would be that the audio during Sunday afternoon’s panel with Christopher Lloyd and Tom Wilson was wrought with seemingly avoidable audio problems.
Darrell and Addi both agree that Fan Expo Dallas is an event that they plan on attending in the future and had a much more enjoyable time at Fan Expo Dallas 2018 than they did at San Diego Comic Con 2017. Check out the podcast for a full rundown of the event and to hear our stories from our journey to Dallas!
