Case Profile for The Cook
A former priest known as The Cook is next on The Blacklist and if you were worried about the new 8PM time slot being tamer boy has NBC proved us wrong. The Cook lost his collar in the priesthood because he was unable to keep his vow of celibacy. This caused him to want to repent for his sins but not in the way you would expect. Instead of repenting he decided to purify himself by burning women alive that fed his temptations. Of course Red never is after what is on the surface as he springs another arsonist from jail to help with the case that he wants in his back pocket.
Meanwhile with the help of a 15 year old prodigy, Liz and Red are able to make progress on Navaro’s glass eye but not before Evil Glen backfires their plans. Luckily Liz, Red, and Dembe get away in time but not before Liz truly starts to question Red’s involvement in the events that led up to her husband’s death.

The Cook In Pictures
Here are a just a few of our favorite scenes from this week.

Red’s Rhetoric
Welcome to Red’s Rhetoric, that part of the show where we play two scenes from this week’s episode of The Blacklist and then you get to vote which one is your favorite in our poll below. Last week 67% of you are all about bringing back the rotary phone as RedTech won last time. Our first clip this week comes when we learn about Red’s gift giving abilities. Our second clip shows how pop culture is Red’s true blacklister. Which is your favorite? If you have no arachnophobia, or the fear of the number four vote #RedSpider. Or if you love Red’s ability to master the force vote #RedJedi.

The Music of The Cook
What better way to open a show about murder by arson then a cover of “Ring of Fire” from Wall of Voodoo. At the end of the episode when Liz and Red look on at Agnes from afar we hear the song “Signal to Noise” from Frankel.
You can hear these songs via the official Blacklist playlist on Spotify or the same playlist recreated by us on Apple Music.

I just caught the latest episode last night. I thought it was good: I don’t think there has been an episode this season that I haven’t enjoyed.
I was really annoyed, though, at how Samar acted like a witch to that priest. I’m not a Catholic, but I am a Christian and I’m really tired of Christians being portrayed as zealous lunatics or lacking compassion. It’s tired. It’s as tired as the Black character who’s always a drug dealer or the Latino character who’s always a gang member. I’d pay a Bitcoin to see a Christian depicted as an intelligent, complicated, thoughtful person.
First of all, Samar doesn’t understand what pastoral counseling is. You don’t call the police every time someone tells you what is going through their mind. That firebug priest was thrown out for having sex with a parishoner, but he had no previous known history of violence. So, why would the senior priest think he would actually act on those thoughts and fantasies?
Secondly, isn’t Samar a Muslim? Okay, well then she needs to stand in the corner and be quiet until her group gets their own act together. And, to those who might say that she’s not responsible for the actions of a few bad apples in her faith, well neither is the priest, even though he is in ministry. He’s not responsible for every nut who goes off the rails.
So, I thought her comment about God forgiving the priest was nasty, mean-spirited and unprofessional. I can’t say that it’s 100% out of character for her because she can say nasty things, at times. But, it was just out of place, here.
I’m also not convinced that Red, who has traveled the world, wouldn’t know that an even number, like four, is a bad number to give gifts in. I’ve never been to Japan and even I know that. I also didn’t think that kid was the best casting choice because he didn’t look 15 to me (not even 15 and a half). He looked like a short 20-something actor trying to play a teenager.
Still, I like the show this week. That shot where Liz tears up when Red won’t tell her the secret Tom died for was priceless. Starting with her chin, her whole face just crumpled. I am one of “those people” who never had a great deal of admiration for Boone’s acting, but she has been really good this season. Credit where credit is due.
