Welcome to Stuff I Learned Yesterday. My name is Darrell Darnell, even though I grew up in a household that always had multiple cats and dogs, I have no desire to have any pets as an adult, and I believe if you aren’t learning, you aren’t living. In today’s episode of Stuff I Learned Yesterday I share a story of hope that can only be be conveyed by the image of white tulips.
Today’s fun fact: Here are some fun facts about tulips.
- At one point in history, tulips were the most expensive flower. In fact, in the 1600s the flowers were more valuable than most people’s homes, and cost almost 10 times what an average working-class man earned in a year.
- The Netherlands are the largest producer and exporter of tulips worldwide, growing and exporting nearly three billion bulbs each year. At one point in Holland’s history, tulips were its fourth biggest export, behind cheese, gin and herring.
- Did you know that cut tulips keep growing in the vase? They grow another inch in height or more after they have been cut.
What I leaned yesterday.
Today’s story is unique in a lot of ways. It’s a story that has touched my life and my heart like no other. What’s better is that my life isn’t even close to being at the top of the list of those impacted most. It’s a story of love, comfort, and compassion. It’s a story of loss, heartbreak, and grief. Most of all, it’s a story of hope.
I’ve decided to just turn the mic on and share from my heart for this story. I’m not scripting it or typing out each word I want to say. For some reason I think this one needs to come straight from my heart.
