Welcome to Stuff I Learned Yesterday. My name is Darrell Darnell, I am currently rewatching all episodes of The X Files to get ready for the new season coming up in January, and I believe if you are learning, you aren’t living. In today’s episode of Stuff I Learned Yesterday I have a chat with my son about stuff we learned at Dragon Con.

Today’s fun fact: Russia and Alaska are divided by the Bering Strait, which is about 55 miles at its narrowest point. In the middle of the Bering Strait are two small, sparsely populated islands: Big Diomede, which sits in Russian territory, and Little Diomede, which is part of the United States.

What I leaned yesterday.
Unless this is your first time listening to Stuff I Learned Yesterday, you are probably very well aware of the fact that I spent Labor Day weekend in Atlanta with my 10 year old son. You’re probably also aware that we were in Atlanta for an event called Dragon Con.

Now, just in case you aren’t aware of what Dragon Con is, I’ll give you a brief description. Dragon Con is a convention for sci-fi, comic, fantasy, and horror fans. There are panels and discussions about many of today’s popular movies and TV shows that fit within those categories, and several actors, writers, and producers are also in attendance. There are also a lot of fans of classic sci-fi, and it’s common to see actors from classic Doctor Who, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and more in attendance. There’s also a massive amount of cosplay, people dressed up as their favorite characters, at this event. It’s really amazing.

If you’ve listened to episode 2 of Stuff I Learned Yesterday, then you’ll recall that I also attended Dragon Con back in 2013. 2013 was my first time to attend Dragon Con and this year was my second time to attend. If you’ve ever wanted to attend a comic con type of event, this is the one I’d recommend. Getting tickets to San Diego Comic Con is incredibly hard and it’s even more crowded than Dragon Con is.

I took both of my kids to Dallas Comic Con back in 2013 and they had a good time, but this trip was much, much different. One major difference is the size. The 2013 Dallas Comic Con had about 25,000 attendees and this year’s Dragon Con had about 70,000. But more than the sheer volume of people, Dragon Con was different because it was a trip with only one of my kids. Not only that, Colby is 2 years older now and he’s a bigger geek now than he was then. At the Dallas con, there wasn’t a whole lot there that he was really excited about. But at Dragon Con, there was plenty. Some of that is due to the bigger schedule of events that Dragon Con offered, but some of it is because he’s more into Doctor Who, Zelda, Star Wars, and other things than ever before.

So that’s the set up, now let’s talk to Colby.

I’m Darrell Darnell and this has been stuff I learned yesterday.
