“Bunker Hill” caps off the first part of Season 4 bringing a climactic battle between Agent Liberty and Manchester Black and we get an origin story of Nia and her journey of discovering her powers. Very exciting!
Nia Nal of Naltor
Nia gets up from watching a classic western movie and goes into another dimension where her dreams take over. She is confronted by disconnected images of a loading hook, a woman screaming for help and Agent Liberty looking like he has a gun trained on her. She is jolted awake to her roommate, watching her, “you sleep weird.” It seems Nia’s roommate is ignoring her instructions to not let her sleep. She goes to work carrying copious amounts of coffee and Kara is now officially worried about her. Nia shrugs it off, tells Kara she had an Agent Liberty nightmare, and goes on to work. Supergirl later shares this nightmare with Alex and Brainy and he reveals that this is very important because of whom Nia is in the grand scheme of time. Alex and Supergirl are pressing him for info but he won’t give it, he just needs to get to her and work with her. Kara goes to Nia’s apartment and Nia starts to tell her story. She is from the planet Naltor and it seems that some of the women have special dreams that are precognitive – they can see into the future. Kara offers to help, Nia accepts, and Brainy appears… “hey, girl.” Bwah! Brainy walks her through the dream where she figures out that she can stop the frightened woman from shaking as badly as she is. She also figures out that this will happen in Collinwood. The three go there and are immediately picked out by the Children of Liberty. Kara tries to find out information about Agent Liberty and gets put in a black van for her trouble. They get kidnapped, which scares Nia but Kara assures her that getting kidnapped as a reporter is a great thing – just ask Lois Lane. Nia is like “who?” and Kara is like “really?” Nia sees their captors coming to hurt them before they do (in her pre-cog mind) and she reacts by using the fired bullet to get out of her cuffs. Kara disappears so Brainy and Nia go investigating around Lockwood Steel, which is where they have been brought, and Nia realizes they are in the place where she was dreaming earlier. She uses *the* nearby loading hook from her dream to take Manchester Black down before he kills Ben’s wife. Supergirl saves Lydia and tells Nia that she’s done a great job. Nia goes to bed that night proud of herself and ready for a great night’s sleep.
Agent Liberty Exposed
Ben Lockwood is on the phone with someone (?) asking them to put Agent Liberty aside because he, Ben, is bringing the kind of publicity they need all on his own. He goes home to find his wife Lydia around the table having a spot o’ tea with Manchester Black. Ben doesn’t know who Manchester is but, as soon as Manchester thanks him for the gift of cutlery for he and his fiancรฉe Fiona, he gets it and is very nervous. Manchester admires a bayonet that was the first thing the Lockwood family forged here in the new land. It was used in the battle of Bunker Hill, you know the one where the Brits are so bloodied that they end up losing the whole war, Ben explains. Manchester outs him as Agent Liberty, which Lydia is not buying until they head down to the basement where the AL suit is housed. Manchester makes Ben put it on so he can die “doing what he loves.” Lydia is not happy at the new revelation and almost gets herself killed in the battle. All the while this is happening J’onn is intervening using the brass knuckles that he and Kara found in Manchester’s apartment to get inside of his mind trying to stop him from carrying out this revenge kill. Manchester chases Ben into the steel factory which has Nth metal production in it. As Supergirl tries to stop Manchester he dust bombs her (?) and she is weakened enough for him to dump a bunch of Nth on her. Nia takes out Manchester with the hook and just as Ben is about to kill Manchester she attempts to fly and free herself from the Nth metal she lifts the entire building and when it comes down it breaks the Nth from her. Lydia is thrown from the second floor balcony. Supergirl saves her and Ben and Manchester are both taken to jail. Now that Ben is outed as Agent Liberty he riles the press into asking whom Supergirl is too. J’onn visits Manchester in jail and they talk about Manchester’s destiny not yet totally given over to the dark side. Lydia is seen alongside the protestors chanting “Liberty” once she sees her husband taken away in handcuffs.
President Shallows
President Baker is yelling at Director Danvers and Col Haley because his approval numbers are down since they haven’t yet caught Agent Liberty. They promise him that he’ll be back in good standing shortly. Once Liberty is taken down the President comes to the DEO and is angered that “Human Rights Advocate” Ben Lockwood has brought a spotlight on Supergirl’s secret identity. The President and Col Haley demand Supergirl’s identity for transparency. Supergirl refuses and the President dismisses Supergirl from the DEO.
Closing Thoughts
So this is the fall finale it turns out. They wrapped up this part of the Agent Liberty storyline with him behind bars – alongside Manchester Black – and Supergirl on the outs with the DEO. As we’ve said again and again Supergirl doesn’t work FOR the DEO so this storyline doesn’t make sense other than the President is under some kind of influence to “un-glasses” Supergirl. Her being “fired” from the DEO means nothing so anywho, we’re also left with protestors camping out at CatCo because they would dare to point out Agent Liberty as an extremist murderer. How dare they! The strength of this episode was Nia’s storyline. She will be a developing hero on the series, complete with her own supersuit (Honeeeeeeeyyyyyyy, where’s my supersuit?). Her ability to start using her precognition to save the day was a huge confidence builder and a real win for her and of course Brainy awing and ooing over her is adorable. Brainy again brings what this episode and, frankly, the season has needed in moments of levity. It was refreshing seeing the unlikely trio traipsing around Collinwood and Kara stupidly engaging the Children of Liberty. I’m at least interested to see whom Ben was asking permission to bench Agent Liberty and to see what will become of Manchester Black. I don’t agree with his methods but I am liking the character very much and David Ajala (along with Nicole Maines) have been welcome additions to the show so far. Until 2019, that only leaves us with Elseworlds. Squeeeee!
Cougar’s Comic Corner
“Elseworlds Finest: Supergirl and Batgirl” by Barbara Kessel, Matt Haley, and Tom Simmons
In this reality, Batgirl is the supreme enforcer of all Gotham. Due to her actions and that of the monitoring “Oracle Eye”, Gotham has been completely sealed off from normal society. An embargo is in place forbidding any Metahumans from entering the city, unless Batgirl permits it. This evening however, is a special occasion. The Justice Society of America and Supergirl arrive in town to escort billionaire philanthropist, Lex Luthor, to Gotham Arena for a special tribute ceremony.

“The strength of this episode was Niaโs storyline.” – agreed but also Manchester Black.
“Iโm at least interested to see whom Ben was asking permission to bench Agent Liberty” – I took that as maybe some of his supporters who know who he is are unhappy it’s Ben behind the desk of the show instead of Agent Liberty so we could get some descent in the ranks in the weeks to come which could be interesting. I’m not big in Ben because he can be bought off; had this been Mercy still as the head who got temporarily caught like Lillian has been in the past it would be one thing but Ben I’m just “Meh” to.
On to the podcast…
Personally I can’t get excited got Lex pulling the strings as I don’t want Lex in town; again Supergirl has enough stuff to pull from herself she doesn’t need to essentially be “Superman” but with a skirt. Too much Superman in Supergirl. I really miss that about season one and how Kara could agree with her cousin sometimes but she wasn’t a copy of him, she had her own takes on things and stood up to him over them…I wish that Kara would come back along with that writing concept because again we don’t need Lex, especially as we have Lillian! They shouldn’t have killed Mercy off so fast and let her be the Lex for this show or bring back Maxwell Lord who was totally Lex in season one. No making Lena Lex that’s for sure so don’t even look there writers!
Kara definitely only hung around the DEO because of Alex!
I have to say I kind of wanted Nia to be human but then that would make her a meta human and they don’t do that on Earth 38 so I shouldn’t be surprised she’s an alien.
Nura is suppose to be Nia’s great-great-great granddaughter Dreamer who’s part of the Legion.
Yes Manchester can get redemption, but does he want it is the question. Honestly I’m conflicted about what I want to see happen because on the one hand Manchester could be a good ally but on the other this whole Arrowverse is lacking when it comes to antihero characters, certainly in proudly declaring they are antiheroes because some hero characters lean darker than others, so I kind of want him to stay an antihero just for the diversity and make things interesting. Right now if I had to pick I’d probably say keep him as an antihero.
Agreed John, I am SSSOOO disappointed in the Lydia ending!!! I get where you’re coming from to a degree Justina, but I think it’s fair to say Lydia knows J’onn didn’t intentionally start the fire and she knows how racist the dad was before had and so it’s just as fair to say yes she’s mad about things but not enough to become irrational like Ben did. As John has said it’s the A or B only side of topics that’s getting annoying, Lydia could have been sad to see Ben locked up given all they’ve been through but she didn’t also have to chant at the end; it’s true some things are A or B in choice but a majority of things can be solved with a middle ground and thus it’s possible for people to reside there in opinion and that should be shown for the most honest take on a topic. Ben is one extreme and Kara is the opposite so why can’t Lydia be the middle saying “Yeah you need to fix the house you messed up but I don’t think you’re evil”? I think if they had a middle ground character in debates every other week at the least it would help the heavy handiness of some plots go over easier with some viewers on occasion.
Sadly Justina with the Lydia failure I don’t have much hope in the son changing Ben’s mind. Even if he did I don’t know if it would have the same impact for me as if he had done it with Lydia also saying it’s not ok to Ben, the son could have spoken how they felt but ideally I would have liked to have seen her saying Ben was wrong also. Yes a kid standing up is still something but again I think they’ve just hurt me so much with Lydia’s handling I’m even more like “I don’t care about Ben’s outcome” where as had she not been a groupie I might have entertained caring about his possible turn towards trying to make up for his actions but again now even if the kid brings him back I think I’m going to be “Pass”.
Ha Kara definitely doesn’t work for the DEO.
As Jensen proves there are new recruits at the DEO so it’s possible some there don’t know she’s Kara but there’s definitely original agents who know who Kara is because she and Alex love saying “my sister” around people, not to mention J’onn calls Kara Ms. Danvers at times. #GiveLenaTheCreditSheDeserves! #LenaIsAGoodGuy!
I miss Alex, her stuff as been light in recent weeks sadly.
To a point I get how they might say “I work with my adoptive sister for (season 4’s intro says AT) the DEO” as Kara works for the DEO also but the problem is they’ve made it clear in the show itself that just because she’s there because of Alex doesn’t mean she’s getting paid by the DEO and if there’s no check she’s not an employee; Kara is essentially stopping in to help Alex finish things early so she can leave earlier to come hang out with her, she is not beholden to any DEO rules because if she was J’onn would have used that factor more in earlier seasons I feel because as much as he’s soft for the girls he will still discipline Alex when he feels she needs it so why wouldn’t he with Kara if he could. It’s very obvious that if Alex didn’t work there Kara would not involve herself with the organization; again in S2 I think she said she doesn’t work for them when Clark was in town and Alex has said in S1 technically Supergirl does not work for the DEO. If Kara works for anyone it’s Alex but just because Alex works for the DEO it doesn’t mean Kara does as they don’t pay her thus not an employee held to workplace consequences.
Ha, another funny thing about secret identities is the fact the DEO runs around with changing badges to top whoever else is on the case – see FBI on their jackets multiple seasons and how Alex told Maggie she was Secret Service once at the start of S2, they are literally hiding who they are also but Kara has to out herself? That’s a level of hypocrisy you usually only see in previous seasons of “Arrow” by Oliver. ๐
Agreed Blackhawkfan I miss Vasquez!
Not a new feedbacker on Aaron, TeamHuntress I just didn’t use the show name this time because I was trying to race in the feedback on time regarding the “Red Tornado” find. ๐
Alex is her Island. ๐
MEGAPOD! ๐ It’s going to be interesting to see how y’all do that – are Cammie and Martin going to talk “Arrow” characters in scenes while John you and whoever is helping out talk “Supergirl” and so on or is it going to be a big free for all kind of as hosts watch the other series also? Do you break it down into night 1, 2, and 3 or do you just discuss it as a whole? Do you do feedback and respond to it as you recap or save it for the end? I don’t envy the planning ahead for you all; good luck! ๐
Spoiler alert: all my feedback for the event is coming to MOS because “Supergirl” is my favorite of the DC shows. ๐ “Arrow” has been good this season, arguably its best…although it could be better if they stopped trying to redeem Black Siren, don’t get me wrong and I like seeing what Nora is up to on “Flash” this season but “Supergirl” has my heart.
I was excited for the crossover when it was just Batwoman they had announced but now the cast list has gotten so packed I’ve become more nervous in regards to proper screen time for everyone and so I’m not really excited anymore I have to say.
The big question: what Earth will Batwoman be on?
A good podcast!
Thanks, Aaron!! I should have known that was you. ๐ We recorded the CrossoverCast last night and I think we did pretty OK at breaking things down and going through everyone’s feedback. Your’s was AMAZING and we all had a great time with it. I hope I did you justice as I was the one reading it. Let me know what you think! Merry Christmas and I can’t wait to catch back up with you and all of our listeners in January!
