In this episode we discuss the feedback we received for the Fringe episode, “Amber 31422.” We discuss the possibility of a third universe, we hear from a new contributor from Portugal and we share some thoughts on Carey Grant and Humphrey Bogart.

Yes, John Huston is Angelica Huston’s dad.
Hi, this is Sandra Costa from Portugal again.
Just watched the last episode (6955 kHz) and me and my sister (we’re twins and no, she’s not trapped in amber) spent almost one hour debating it, which is incredible because we both hate talking on the phone.
There’s a lot, (A LOT!) of H.P. Lovecraft in this episode. For those who are familiar with Lovecraft’s universe (one of the best Horror/Scifi writers of all time), the story of the observers/first people is not something new. In fact, “the ancient ones” were a group of very-highly-developed beings that have lived on this planet hundreds of millions of years ago before there was even a plant in here. They could travel through time and parallel universes, just like the observers. And they have left buried and hidden their towns/kingdoms all over the continents. Just like the observers. Also, “the ancient ones” DIDN´T want to be found. Just like the observers. Probably the only difference that we can see, when we compare the two universes, is that the ancient ones were most likely aliens, while the observers are considered to be the very first humans (at least, this what I have concluded).
But I have to admit that this episode intrigued me a lot. I even saw it two times on the same day, which is something that I never have done before. And after a long discussion, we have come to several hypothesis:
1- The Observers are the first people (many viewers had already figured this out) and they don’t want their old technology to come into the wrong hands. However, if they don’t want this to happen, why did they leave their devices on this planet, in the first place? It would have been wiser to “clean” their traces before someone found them. And if they travel in time, THEY KNOW that someone will find them, sooner or later.
2- They are not the ones who are sending these strange codes for we already know that they don’t want us to find their technology. It is possible that someone found old documents concerning the observers, learned their language, and now they are sending these coordinates in modern languages (did Sam Weiss start all this? He’s much older and much taller than he looks…).
3- We know that Walternet is behind the scheme but, according to this episode, these messages were already here even before radio has been invented, even before Walter, Walternet and Bell were born. Which means that this ancient knowledge has been for a very long time in the hands of a very old, secret society.
ZFT???
What if ZFT is older, much older than we think? What if these ideas were developed during the Industrial Revolution, and a group of people – frightened of the destructive power that these machines possessed and the damages that they were doing to this planet – have decided to declare war against technology? If this is true, than Walter/Walternet is a disciple and not the creator of a terrorist movement. Just because Walter (or Walternet or Bell) wrote this book, that doesn’t mean that such ideas were actually HIS own ideas. Besides, if ZFT is older than we believe it is, it wasn’t created after Peter’s kidnapping. There is a “higher”, much “bigger” purpose behind all this.
We believe that there are two factions working: the observers are doing everything they can to avoid the destruction of one of the universes through the devices that they have created. However, they can no longer be terminated, which is why they left them buried but still keep an eye on them (“the arrival”, for example). The other faction is called ZFT and they want Peter AND ONLY PETER to find out the truth, which is why they called the fringe department’s attention, by wiping innocents’ memories. They want the “doomsday’s machine” to be triggered by Peter. To the ZFT movement, he is some sort of a twisted Jesus Christ who will fulfill their prophecy by killing us all. And since Walternet is a faithful believer of these ideas, he is willing to sacrifice his son, just like Abraham was willing to do exactly the same thing.
Why Peter? Maybe, a long time ago, an observer had sex with a “first one” and that gene passed on from one generation to another. As a scientist and a ZFT disciple, Walter must have stumbled upon this secret, and now he is offering his son to his cause.
All this episode is indeed very strange…
Love, Sandra
Sorry, mistake: The first one had sex with a “second one” (us)
